2 St. Catherine of Siena Parish 4555 N. Haven Ave., Toledo, Ohio Web site: Parish Office: Parish FAX: Office Hours Monday through Thursday - 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Friday - 9:00 a.m.-noon Dear Parishioners: It is now time for us to present to you the third edition of St. Catherine of Siena Parish phone directory. As in the past this directory is a very good tool for finding phone numbers and addresses and s of our parishioners. Also included in this addition is a list and explanation of our parish ministries and church groups and organizations. The parish directory is provided by Guide Book Publishing of St. Louis, Missouri. Due to the generosity of our advertisers this book is provided free of charge to all parishioners. I would encourage you to patronize these sponsors as you look for the various services provided. St. Catherine of Siena Parish continues to be a faith filled parish. In addition to all of the ministries, organizations and activities listed we are proud to once again provide a Pre-School for our parish and area community. Due to the hard work of our Pre-School staff we have 125 students attending. St. Catherine Early Childhood Center provides quality education for children ages 3, 4 and 5-year-old students. In order for any parish to thrive we need the assistance of all of our parishioners sharing their time, talent and treasure to help us grow in faith. This directory is a great tool to allow you to see the groups and activities you may wish to be involved in. Please keep this book as a handy reference to all that is happening within our parish community. 1 In Christ, Reverend Francis J. Speier Pastor

3 Parish Mission Statement We, the St. Catherine of Siena Parish Family, a community of Christian people called to discipleship through Baptism, seek to share our giftedness and grow in our relationship with the Lord and one another. We gather around the table of the Lord in a spirit of unity and fellowship to be nourished by the Eucharist and strengthened by the Word. We are called, as individuals and as a community, to grow in prayer, worship, and education. The Lord sends us forth to be His witnesses and to minister to all in our parish and in our world. We support the active, the struggling, the alienated, and those in need. United by our faith, hope and love for Jesus Christ, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, we seek to build the kingdom of God. Mass Schedule Tuesday and Friday - 8:30 a.m. Saturday - 4:30 p.m. Sunday - 9:00 a.m. Confessions every Saturday from 3:30-4:00 p.m. before the 4:30 p.m. Mass. Holy day and Holiday schedule - Check bulletin for times. First Friday Eucharistic Adoration held the first Friday of every month beginning with the 8:30 a.m. Mass and ending with benediction at 5:00 p.m. in our Sacristy Chapel. History of St. Catherine of Siena Church Father Charles Comte, seven years pastor of St. Boniface Church, Oak Harbor, Ohio, was appointed to organize the new parish. In a letter dated July 17, 1930, The Most Reverend Bishop Samuel A. Stritch designated the parish be founded under the patronage of St. Catherine of Siena. In this letter the official boundaries of the new parish were described as follows: Eleanor Avenue-both sides-from Dixie Highway to Jackman Road; Dixie Highway from Eleanor Avenue to the State Line, both sides of Dixie Highway and Jackman Road and both sides from Eleanor Avenue to the State Line. It is noteworthy that the establishment of St. Catherine of Siena parish by Bishop Stritch marked the last major improvement by him before concluding his nine year reign as head of the Diocese of Toledo. Soon after, Bishop Stritch left Toledo to become the Archbishop of Milwaukee. Prior to the building of the Church, Mass was celebrated in St. Agnes Parish. The first Mass at St. Catherine Parish was celebrated on November 30, 1930 by Father Charles Comte, the new pastor, in the basement of the first unit of the edifice. With this official act St. Catherine of Siena parish was on its way. 2

4 Helen Miller, 131 Capistrano, was the first person to be baptized in the parish. The baptism took place on September 14, 1930 and the officiant was Father Bittman who was at the time associate pastor at St. Agnes. The first confirmation recorded in the parish annals was the class confirmed by Bishop Karl J. Alter on May 17, The marriage of Dorothy Brodbeck, Monroe, Michigan and George Morgan, 4645 Manorwood on November 15, 1930, marked the first celebration of this sacrament in the parish. The first funeral was that of Rose Weissenberger who died on September 21, Previous to this, plans for the first church were begun under the leadership of St. Catherine s first building committee consisting of Ignatius Fleitz, Earl J. Rowe, John Laskey, Ralph Manore and John Diegenfelder. On June 30, 1930 the following real estate was purchased: 290 ft. frontage on Corbin Rd.; 340 ft. frontage on North Lockwood and 300 ft. frontage on North Haven. The architect of the new church building and school was the firm of Mills, Rhines, Bellman & Nordhoff. The contractor chosen was Comte- Naumann Co. Father Comte s brother, William, was a part owner of the construction firm. The plans called for a two story structure with 110 ft. frontage on Corbin Road and 140 ft. frontage on North Lockwood. The exterior was to be of Old Gothic Random Ashlar Limestone. The inside called for 36 pews of red gum with a seating capacity of 360. An elevenstop Mason & Risch organ was acquired. At the first Mass on November 30, 1930 it rained into the church as the roof was not yet completed. Between parishioners were in attendance. The new church was formally dedicated at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass on February 15, The homily was preached by Monsignor O Connell from St. Francis de Sales. St. Catherine of Siena Parish/School now houses a Pre-School Program for children ages 3 through Pre-K. We currently have approximately 120 children. Pastors who have served here at St. Catherine of Siena Church are: Rev. Charles F. Comte, Rev. Alfred G. Schindler, Rev. Alphonse A. Hoffman, Rev. Robert J. Armstrong, Rev. Arthur Badger, Rev. William C. Parker, Rev. Michael G. Hohenbrink, Rev. Gary R. Walters, Rev. J. Douglas Garand and current Pastor, Fr. Francis J. Speier. 3

5 Our Patron Saint - St. Catherine of Siena St. Catherine of Siena was born March 25, 1347, the 24th of 25 children. Catherine grew up close to St. Dominic Church which undoubtedly influenced her later decision to become a Dominican sister. Even though she had very little schooling, she later became a great teacher of Theology and published many books including The Dialogue, an intense spiritual treatise. In 1375, she began a successful campaign to have the papacy returned to Rome from Avignon, France. Not only did she guide the spiritual life of the church in her own times, but eventually she was honored by being named patron saint of both the city of Rome and the Country of Italy. In 1970, Pope Paul VI declared St. Catherine a doctor of the church. She remains only one of two women ever selected for this honor. She died on April 29, 1380 at the age of 33. Parish Staff Fr. Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is upon request. Anointing is for those who are terminally ill, facing surgery, or struggling with their faith spiritually. A person may be anointed more than once, should conditions change. Anointing of the Sick is also scheduled twice a year one half hour before our weekend Mass. Watch bulletin for these scheduled dates. Funerals Funerals are scheduled through the funeral director and the Parish Office. Scripture Service or Rosary at the funeral home for the preceding evening of the funeral is also scheduled through the Parish Office. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are appointed for two year periods by the Bishop at the nomination of the pastor after they have taken the required instructions and made the commitment of service. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion also take Holy Communion to our homebound. Lectors Lectors are parishioners who proclaim the Word of God at our Masses.
