3 PENTECOST SUNDAY PAGE 3 JUNE 4, 2017 Around the Table Dear Friends, When we come to Mass today, everything is in English, and the words and meanings are much more familiar to us. Understandability, then, it is easy to look back and say, Well, why wasn t it this way all the time? Those of us with a little more time, under our belts, can remember well going to Mass with a missal, and on one side there was Latin and on the other side, English. Many of us tried hard to follow the Latin by paralleling it with the English meaning. Today, we don t have to do that at all because the priest isn t speaking in Latin, and everything in the Church, even the inscriptions in new churches, are all in English. The question then arises: How did the Church come to use Latin for so many centuries? It used Latin officially, from somewhere around the beginning of the reign of Charlemagne, about 800 A.D., until the late 1960 s. Why was there 1,200 years or more focused on Latin? It seems so obvious now, that each of us ought to be able to hear and celebrate Mass in their own language. Today s First Reading tells us several obvious but easily overlooked aspects about the Church. When the Reading says, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We realize that the first presentation in the Church was done in such a way that if we were Americans and were there at that time, we would have heard everything in English as we do now. And if we were French, we d heard it in French; if Japanese, we d have heard it in Japanese. So, from that perspective, today s Reading is a model of the Church we know now. It is so understandable, then, why at the Second Vatican Council, the Church Fathers restored what had always been, since the time of the first Pentecost. People will often tell me, that they miss the universality of the use of one language. And certainly, the advantage of using Latin was that when we went to France, or Germany, or to japan or Poland, once we heard that Latin, we were surprisingly at home. So, one might say that we gained but we lost. We lost the sense of common worship together that the Latin language gave us, all using our missals, each with its different translation. That which we gained, is much more intimate, and personal, giving each person a sense of belonging, by virtue of understanding. The challenge facing each of us and to our Church today, is to work towards a deep, shared sense of unity in the Spirit and of belonging with all Christian peoples regardless of language. Perhaps at some final point then, a common language will emerge which all of us, as Christians, will speak and share together, the language of love, mercy and peace. God s Spirit be always with you, Father Denis Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor The Solemnity of Pentecost Attention: Altar Servers Please note that starting next weekend, there will be a sign-up sheet at each Mass for trained Altar Servers to be able to serve. Each Server should write their name on the sheet at the podium in the Gathering Space prior to entering the sacristy to dress in their alb. Farewell Celebration Next Sunday After All Masses Please join us on Sunday, June 11, as we remember all of the wonderful work that our Pastoral Associate, Kathryn Ling and Deacon, Ken Fry have done for OLV over these many years! Each is taking a path towards a new journey in their life, but for one day, we will all be together to share stories and memories of their time here at OLV. A light reception to honor our friends will follow each Mass on Sunday, June 11. We hope that you can join us for this special day!

A Light reception will follow in the Martha and Mary Room after Mass. SPORTS NEWS Hello Cougar Nation! On behalf of Dan Gutowsky and myself, we would like to give you an update on the TACKLE FOOTBALL REGISTRATION numbers for We have had quite an increase in registrations over the last 60 days. We have had a huge increase in football Registrations from St Joseph's Parish (Panthers) of South Lyon, and we expect even further registrations. We are very excited, The Varsity team now has 11 tackle football players from St. Joseph's, St. James and Our Lady of Victory. These numbers combined with the varsity numbers for Our Lady of Sorrows, will make it a much larger varsity football team that we believe will compete for the prep bowl championship! Our Junior Varsity numbers have increased substantially. Given that, we are optimistic and open to having separate Junior Varsity and Freshman football teams for Our Lady of Victory, practicing and playing exclusively at Catholic Central. But we still need more numbers, specifically in the third and fourth grade level to make it work. We are holding registration open for two more weeks so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank You Coach Mark Woolhiser (mjwoolhiser@mbc-ic.com)

5 PENTECOST SUNDAY PAGE 5 JUNE 4, 2017 Christian Service by Nancy Tolkacz Catholic Social Teachings-June Theme: Solidarity- Loving Our Neighbor Locally and Globally From Michael Hovey s brochure Major Themes of Catholic Social Teachings We are all brothers and sisters of one God., one human family. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they live. We are one human family, whatever our nahonal, ethnic, racial, economic or ideological differences. Learning to prachce the virtue of solidarity means learning that loving our neighbor has global dimensions in an interdependent world. In recognizing our solidarity, we recognize the truth that we are indeed the body of Christ. Volunteers Needed for Missionary Sisters of Charity Picnic Thursday, July 13 Once again this summer, we will be hosting a picnic for Missionary Sisters of Charity. Each summer, the sisters offer a summer camp for children in the Mexican Town section of Detroit. Every Thursday during the summer, the kids go on a field trip to a local church. Our Lady of Victory will be hosting a Mass and picnic for these kids on Thursday, July 13, at the Waterford Bend Park. Many hands are needed to make this picnic fun, successful and memorable. Our Lady of Victory s Dad s Club has generously offered to cook and serve the lunch on that day. Please Nancy Tolkacz or call the parish office, if you are able to assist. There is a sign up board in the Gathering Space. We need bakers, station supervisors, set up, serving and clean up crews and runners. We also need filled water balloons for the event. 100 New Beach Towels Needed We are collecting brand new beach towels through the first week of July. The towels will be given to the 100 kids who will be attending the July 13th picnic that we are hosting. Please place all towels in the designated bin in the Gathering Space. Look for this towel icon on the bin. Thank you for your generous support. Please note that if you can not go out to do the shopping but would like to assist monetarily, simply send your money or check to the office. Be sure to indicate on the envelope that it is for the July 13th picnic. Summer School Supply Collection I can hear the kids complaining already. We are not even out of school and our church is collecting school supplies. Well the stores offer sales throughout the summer on supplies and I want to take advantage of them. In addition, we send some supplies back with the Sisters after the picnic on July 13th. Please place your donations in the bin in the Gathering Space. Look for this icon. It will direct you to the appropriate bin. Looking for Gently Used Books This month, we will be collecting gently used children s books. The books will be donated to the children at our July 13th picnic. Now is a good time to clean out closets, bookcases and storage boxes of books that are no longer needed or appreciated. We accept new books, as well. We need books for 5-13 year olds. Please place your donations in the bin with the bookshelf icon on it. Thank you in advance for your support. OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference #437 To d a y a s w e c e l e b r a t e Pentecost, Jesus says to his disciples: Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Is there an individual or family that you know who needs assistance? Please encourage them to contact OLV s Society of St. Vincent de Paul (248) , ext. 478), so together we can extend a helping hand to those who are suffering and also the Lord s Peace of Heart. Please join us at the next meeting of OLV s SVdP Conference on Tuesday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m., in the Martha Mary Room. Ever wondered about your role in that last part? Well, here s your opportunity: The Life Issues Committee of St. James (which addresses life issues for ALL ages) has several members participating in visits to female prisoners of the Lower Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti. We go once a month for a 1-2 hour visit where we simply talk with the prisoner. You see, in many cases they have been abandoned by their former friends and family and have little or no contact with the outside world. We do carpool from Northville, if transportation is an issue and there is no cost to participate. We have been participating for the last 2-3 years and it has been a very eye opening and fulfilling experience for us. This program is not for everyone but if you are curious and want more details, please contact Bob and Sandy Harmer at bobharmer969@gmail.com.

6 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 6 Jesus promises in today s Open Hands & Hearts reading that he would send an Advocate. The Advocate he Hospitality Ministry speaks of is the Holy Spirit which is often imaged as the love of the Father and the Son poured out into the world. We celebrate the presence of the Spirit within us particularl y at Baptism and Confirmation and the special gifts he brings to us. They are highlighted in Isaiah and have traditionally been given to us as Wisdom, Knowledge, Courage, Right Judgment, Awe and Wonder, Re verence, Understanding. Not every gift will be developed equally, since we are each bestowed with talents and experiences that may highlight one over the other but it is the task of each of us to identify the gifts that are most evident and to with the help of the Spirit allow them to grow within so that we can better do the work that God has asked. Perhaps, it would make for an interesting discussion as a family to survey the gifts of the Holy Spirit as they are found in each family member? How do those gifts contribute to the love, peace and joy that exists among you? As you are affirming each other, gauge your Spirit rating as a family. What gifts do you as one body share best with others? What gifts would you like to see deepened? On this Pentecost weekend, revel in the presence of your loved ones and invite the Spirit to renew you each and every day. Perhaps as a family, you would like to recite this prayer which is used at every Confirmation. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Congratulations to more of our young people as they come to the Table. We have been blessed as a parish to assist families with older children to celebrate their First Communion. We have been pleased to offer our support to them throughout this process and welcome them at the table of the Lord. They are Jess Simpson, Anna Simpson and Aiden Konieczny. Congratulations to them! May they and their families find this to be the first of many times they will come to celebrate the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist! Mary Ellen Skene Director Faith Formation OLV Baccalaureate Mass Sunday, June 11, 9:30 a.m. Tina Bak, Coordinator All High School and College seniors and their families are invited to attend the Our Lady of Victory s Baccalaureate Mass on June 11, at 9:30 a.m. We would like to honor our graduates and wish them well on their future endeavors. A light reception in the Martha and Mary Room will follow. Graduates are welcome to wear their caps and gowns or their Sunday best for the Mass. We would like to create a display board with pictures of our graduates whether or not they are able to attend the Mass and Reception. Please help us honor them and keep them in our prayers this summer by submitting a senior picture. Pictures should be placed in an envelope and can be either dropped off or mailed to the Parish Office. Pictures will not be returned. Please make sure to label the back of your picture. Congratulations Graduates! May God s blessings follow you as you find new journeys to travel. Men study to become our future shepherds at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which is the college and graduate seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal support these seminarians as they prepare for the priesthood, as well as men in the permanent diaconate program. Sacred Heart s student body also includes seminarians studying for the priesthood for other dioceses throughout the country and world, and religious orders. Lay women and men earn graduate and undergraduate degrees and diplomas in religious studies at the seminary to serve in parish ministry throughout the Archdiocese. For more information about Sacred Heart Major Seminary, or other CSAfunded programs, ministries, and services please go to CHOIR NOTES The word Pentecost means 50th day. We celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples 50 days aler Easter; hence we call it Pentecost. We can also call it the birthday of the Church when the disciples, with the grace of the Holy Spirit, were inspired and given courage to come out of hiding and begin the ministry of spreading the word of God. Today, as we did on Easter, the Cantors sing a sequence. It is the oldest liturgical hymn/poem dacng from the 9th century. There were many sequences sung during the liturgical year, but are now reduced to only four. The Easter and Pentecost Sequences are required to be sung, but the ones for Corpus Chrisc and Our Lady of Sorrows are not. It was begun as a concnuacon of the Gospel Alleluia to allow for a procession to the ambo and a meditacon on the theme of the day. It is now sung before the Gospel for meditacon. The Easter Sequence that we use was wriuen by Wipo of Burgundy, in the 11th century. The Pentecost Sequence, known as the Golden Sequence, is a masterpiece of beaucful, sacred Lacn poetry, and has three possible authors, one of whom was Pope Innocent III. It is sung in plain chant, a simple melody line usually unaccompanied. This Sunday sees the end of the Choir year and the appearance of the Adult Choir uncl next fall. They will have a well-deserved cme off. Thank you to all the members for sharing your cme and talent with the parish by leading the congregacon in beaucful and inspiraconal song and prayer. Kathy Sanderson, Director Novena Prayer of Healing: June 4-June 12, 2017 Many parishioners have asked to have a special prayer for those in our community who are experiencing an illness whether it be physical or mental. We thought it would be nice to start a Novena on Pentecost Sunday and to end it nine days later on Monday, June 12. If you would like to join us, simply cut out this Prayer for Healing and pray it along with each day s intention. Prayer for Healing God, like a watchful Shepherd, You care for us. You make the earth yield healing herbs and medicines and give us the knowledge to learn their power. Your creative love continues through the healing hands of doctors, pharmacists, and nurses, and the healing counsel of priests, ministers, and friends. Bless me, and all who suffer. Our afflictions become a cross that burdens us with fear and uncertainty. Cast out our fear and revive our faith. Give us strength that we may be filled with hope. Let the Holy Spirit come to our aid that we might live each day in the joy for which You fashioned us. I pray for healing in body, soul, and spirit that I may be Your servant in this world and enjoy the fullness of Your Presence in the life to come. I make this prayer humbly, knowing I cannot restrict or direct Your saving grace. I give joyful thanks for Your compassion wherever I may find it. I ask all this in the Name of the Lord Jesus Who intercedes before You on my behalf. Amen. Novena Intentions: Day 1: That all who are sick may experience the healing touch of the Lord Jesus. Day 2: That all who are ill among my family and friends may be restored to health in mind, body, and spirit. Day 3: That all who suffer from mental disease may receive compassionate treatment. Day 4: That all the homebound and bedridden may have Christ as their consolation. Day 5: That all who suffer from diseases that devastate the body may be granted strength and hope. Day 6: That all with disabling handicaps may be blessed with forbearance. Day 7: That all doctors, nurses, and other caregivers may be well in body and spirit. Day 8: That our lawmakers will pass laws to ensure that proper, dignified medical care is available for all who are in need, especially the poor and the elderly. Day 9: That God might look with favor on my special intentions.
