3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 JULY 2, 2017 Around the Table Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends, There is a great story told about the famous Trappist monk, Thomas Merton, when he was living at Gethsemani Monastery, in Kentucky. One weekend a group of women came to the monastery to make a retreat, and when the retreat was finished on a Sunday afternoon, as they were about to leave the monastery to go back to their homes, but paused to thank the monks for a wonderful weekend. Their thank you was extended to all the monks for their warm and welcoming hospitality. The women spoke of how they were leaving feeling spiritually renewed, and nourished by the opportunity afforded them to attend the celebration of the Eucharist each day, and with that they left. As they were driving out of the monastery grounds, someone spied a man lying in the ditch, on the side of the driveway. He appeared to be barely alive, dirty, his clothing torn and his face unshaven with several days growth of beard. Calling attention to the man, one of the woman suggested that they stop the car to see if they could somehow help the man. They were about to stop, when one of the women said, We really don t have time. I should get back. I have my bridge group gathering at my home today at 4:00 p.m. Another commented that perhaps, It would be too dangerous to stop. After all, the man is a stranger to them, and they don t know what he might do. So, it was decided that they would drive on. It is said that this story somehow made its way back to the monastery and told to Father Merton. His response was a powerful one, You know, these women received our Lord each day in the Eucharist while they were here in the monastery, and then they spied him lying in a ditch and did not recognize him! We don t know if this is a true story, but I would say that it is easy enough for each of us to imagine, maybe doing the same. How often do we receive the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist, yet easily overlook the fact that, the Lord Jesus stands in our midst all the time? For we have been taught to believe that we are all temples of the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself makes distinction as to whether we are wealthy or poor, whether we are well educated or not. He loves all of us, He is in all of us! In today s Gospel passage, he says, Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. This is to remind us that anyone whom we may meet during our day is a child of God. That, in fact, that person carries the very image of God, the very person of Jesus within them. The way we treat that person, the way we respond to that person, that is the way we respond to Jesus. To reject that person is to reject Jesus. To receive him or her, is to receive Jesus. It is said that Thomas Merton s response to the women who drove on, who did not stop to help the man in need, reflected that, Unless we first receive the Christ in our neighbor and in those who need us, we should not deceive ourselves into believing that we are worthy to receive Him in the Eucharist. Jesus calls us to love one another and in loving one another, we bring Him to others. It is an awesome responsibility to bring Jesus to other people, but if we refuse to do it, who will? Trying to follow in the ways of the Master, Father Denis Reserved Seats are Going Fast! If you called the Parish Office to reserve a seat for the bus trip to the Detroit Opera House to see the Pope s Choir perform on Saturday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m., please make arrangements to pay for your ticket(s) by July 15. 4 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 4 NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN Check out the Newly Redesigned Archdiocese of Detroit Seal The archdiocese s new coat of arms was unveiled during the Saturday night Vigil Mass of Pentecost, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This event also marked the release of Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron s landmark pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel. This letter was the outcome from last fall s historic Synod 16. The new archdiocesan seal that was revealed is the first redesign since The new coat of arms features a more modern look, with images of St. Anne the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and patroness of the Archdiocese of Detroit, rippling water and an open door adorning a red, blue and gold shield. Msgr. Robert McClory, m o d e r a t o r o f t h e c u r i a f o r t h e archdiocese, helped lead the team who was involved in the redesign effort. A major difference between the old coat of arms and the new, Msgr. McClory said, is one s ability to tell the story of faith using its symbols: Starting with the Old Testament in St. Anne and continuing through the revelation of the New Testament through her daughter, Mary, one comes to Christ through the waters of baptism and is invited through the open doors of the Church to bring others with them to their ultimate fulfillment with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in heaven. Msgr. McClory credited the leadership of Archbishop Vigneron who also plans to update his personal coat of arms, half of which features the archdiocesan crest in shepherding the project as a way to inspire the faithful to the new evangelization. Excerpt from the Michigan Catholic website, For more information and to read the Archbishop s letter, please visit our website, Altar Servers Wanted Please note that during the summer months, there will be a sign-up sheet at each Mass for trained Altar Servers to be able to serve. 6 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 6 Scripture Reflection for the Family In this weekend s gospel reading, we hear of Jesus telling the disciples what to expect before they go out to proclaim the gospel. There will be tension between family members and the cost will be great. However, there are also many rewards for those who proclaim his Good News and those who help them. SpeciCically, he mentions those who receive the prophet for they will receive a prophet s reward. We all know of the prophet in scripture and of those of our own age who are very public in their proclamations of God s kingdom. We all too often miss the prophets who come to us in the most unexpected places. They may be the person who is of a different religious persuasion that shows through their words and actions the joy of living a life recognizing God s work in and through their lives and their willingness to share that joy with others. Or they are the one who performs the most menial of tasks in our municipalities and public places and does so with a smile on their face and a welcoming voice. They may come to us in hospitals through a competent, caring medical staff, a clerk who patiently deals with our frustrations, or just a face passing us by who smiles and says good morning. When we raise our eyes and our hearts, we can see our God working through them. Without any formal proclamation their presence then becomes a gift and can bring light into what may have been a discouraging day. Each of us is called to be a prophet and blessed is he who knows how to bring God easily and with great concidence into a conversation. For most of us however, our gift will be in developing the art of being the prophet in unexpected places. Families can be a platform to teach their children through their responses to those around them how to develop the gift of recognizing the prophet and becoming one them self. As in our Cirst reading this weekend it can simply be in welcoming the stranger, showing hospitality to guests in your own home, or when you are out and about. Jesus taught us that we have the opportunity to receive him in every person we encounter. The reward in believing and accepting that presence is Christ himself who will come bringing with him his peace, joy and love. A simple smile and a kind word is all you need to begin! Registration for the program has begun! Registration has begun for next fall s program which encompasses children ages 3 1/2-kindergarten on Sundays, and during the week for students in grades Cirst through eighth! Sacred Heart Major Seminary has committed to meet this growing demand through increasing scheduling flexibility, online classes, and generous scholarships at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
