3 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY PAGE 3 JUNE 11, 2017 On the Same Page Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Dear Friends, Today, the Church celebrate this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. It has been, over the years called the greatest dogma of the Christian faith. During the first thousand years of Christianity, there was no special feast celebrated in honor of this mystery, but, as Pope Alexander II (1073) declared, every day of the liturgical year was devoted to the honor and adoration of the Sacred Trinity. However, it was in response to the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Jesus, a special Mass text in honor of the Holy Trinity was introduced and incorporated in the Roman liturgical books. This Mass was not assigned for a definite day but could be used on certain Sundays according to the private devotion of each priest. From the ninth century on, various bishops of the Frankish kingdoms promoted in their own dioceses a special feast of the Holy Trinity, usually on the Sunday following the Solemnity of Pentecost. The Mass text used at that time, was said to have been composed by Abbot Alcuin (804). The custom of observing a special feast in honor of the Trinity became increasingly popular in the northern countries of Europe. Several synods prescribed it for their respective territories in France, Germany, England, and the Netherlands. In the thirteenth century, the orders of the Benedictines and Cistercians adopted the annual celebration of the feast. It was kept on different Sundays in different places, until in 1334 Pope John XXII accepted the festival into the official calendar of the Western Church and ordered that henceforth, it should be held everywhere on the Sunday after Pentecost. The Feast of the Holy Trinity is now among the great annual festivals of all Christian communities. Although it is not observed with additional liturgical services outside the Mass, its celebration quickly took root in the hearts and minds of the faithful. In all countries of Europe, popular traditions are closely associated with this feast. The making of the sign of the cross, which professes faith both in the redemption of Christ and in the Trinity, was practiced from the earliest centuries. Saint Augustine (431) mentioned and described it many times in his sermons and letters. In those early days, Christians made the sign of the cross with three fingers (Trinity) on their foreheads. The words ("In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost") were added later. Almost two hundred years before Augustine, in the third century, Tertullian had already reported this touching and beautiful early Christian practice: In all our undertakings when we enter a place or leave it; before we dress; before we bathe; when we take our meals; when we light the lamps in the evening; before we retire at night; when we sit down to read; before each new task we trace the sign of the cross on our foreheads. Happy Feast, be Blessed, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Father Denis Attention: Altar Servers Please note that starting this weekend, there will be a sign-up sheet at each Mass for trained Altar Servers to be able to serve. Each Server should write their name on the sheet at the podium in the Gathering Space prior to entering the sacristy to dress in their alb. Farewell Celebration Sunday After All Masses Please join us on Sunday, June 11, as we remember all of the wonderful work that our Pastoral Associate, Kathryn Ling and Deacon, Ken Fry have done for OLV over these many years! Each is taking a path towards a new journey in their life, but for one day, we will all be together to share stories and memories of their time here at OLV. A light reception to honor our friends will follow each Mass on Sunday, June 11. We hope that you can join us for this special day!
4 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 4 NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN Konnect the Dots Kathryn Ling, Pastoral Associate We officially closed the 50 day celebration of Easter after the last Mass on Pentecost, and returned to Ordinary Time on Monday. However, for the next two Sundays we have special solemnities. Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and next week the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Corpus Christi. As we enter church, there are holy water fonts at the door and many people make the sign of the cross on themselves and say, In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We also use those words when we begin Mass and it can become very easy to not think about what we are saying or doing. It is easy to lose sight of the powerful mystery that they express. It is the shortest Creed we have in the Church and it says in very few words all that we believe. The reason that the holy water fonts are at the door is so that as we enter we can recall the words that were said by the priest or deacon when water was poured over our heads at the time of our baptism. It is because we have been baptized that we are called to come to the Table of the Lord each week. This feast celebrated one of the central beliefs of Christianity, the Trinity. It is the dogma of the triune God: God is three (tri) in one (une). Christians name God as a Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is not only a mystery that puzzles us and it continues to capture our imagination. From the very earliest centuries of Christianity theologians have struggled to find the exact words to explain the dimensions of the Trinity. In truth, there are not exact words because it is a mystery and therefore, unable to be defined. The Gospel passage for today provides some insight into how the early Christians perceived the relationship between two of the divine persons. We hear that the Father sent the Son (Jesus) into the world that we might be saved through Him. We hear in these words that there is an intimate relationship between them. The focus of the reading shifts from the nature of God in God s self to the activity of God in our lives. The challenge of faith is placed before us on this Feast of Pentecost. It is not one of comprehending the mystery of the Trinity or even trying to find the words to understand it or explain it. For it never really will be understood. Rather, it is the challenge of acceptance. Each of us is invited to believe in God s tender working in our life. It is with that conviction that we know the Trinity is ever present each and every hour of our life and therefore, it drives us to act in a way that shows that love, compassion and forgiveness to the people we meet. How will you show the love of the Trinity this week? Our Lady of Victory Catholic School NEWS School Year Comes to an End! It is with great anwcipawon and also a small feeling of sadness that we have reached our academic year! I menwon great anwcipawon because I know for students, and also for parents, how exciwng the end of an academic year may be. School communiwes emit a sense of complewon as the end of the school year approaches. It is a feeling unlike any other environment and the end of the year marks the beginning of many months of fun, family, and hopefully relaxawon, as well. However, I must say that I will be saddened to see the students, teachers, and parents leave for the summer months. As I reflect on this past year (and my first) here at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, I am filled with pride for the tremendous objecwves that we accomplished. As a community, we successfully completed the accreditafon process. We also made great measurable strides in the classroom evidenced by our school s IOWA Assessment scores that increased in nearly every discipline in each grade. However, most important, we wholeheartedly embodied the theme for the year: My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. This is a special community, and though none of us is perfect, we certainly strive for perfecwon spiritually, academically, interpersonally, and socially. Oben, the end of the year also includes many goodbyes. We say goodbye to our eighth grade students who are ready to tackle the challenges that high school affords. We say goodbye to our students and their families who will not be returning. May God bless you and please know that we will be praying for you. Finally, we do say goodbye to three faculty members, Mrs. Mach, Ms. Rutkowski, and Mrs. AyoMe. Thank you so very much for your years of service and dedicawon to Our Lady of Victory. This school is beuer because of you and your mark has been indelibly leb on the hearts of the students and families to whom you have ministered. May God bless you always and know that we will be praying for you as the next journey in your lives begins. Finally, my prayer for all of you is that you enjoy a summer vacawon filled with laughter, smiles, and amusement. Please relish this Wme together! May God bless you abundantly and I look forward to being back on campus when the new school year begins. - Mr. Dan Timmis, OLV Principal 7 th Annual OLV Victory Run A Great Success! We want to extend a special thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and runners who made the 7th Annual OLV Victory Run a huge success! We raised money for our special charities, while promoting a healthy lifestyle to our OLV families and Northville Community! We are especially grateful to the OLV Dads Club and Allyson Card for leading this event. Start training now for next year s race.
5 MOST HOLY TRINITY PAGE 5 JUNE 11, 2017 Christian Service by Nancy Tolkacz Catholic Social Teachings-June Theme: Solidarity- Loving Our Neighbor Locally and Globally From Michael Hovey s brochure Major Themes of Catholic Social Teachings We are all brothers and sisters of one God., one human family. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they live. We are one human family, whatever our nakonal, ethnic, racial, economic or ideological differences. Learning to prackce the virtue of solidarity means learning that loving our neighbor has global dimensions in an interdependent world. In recognizing our solidarity, we recognize the truth that we are indeed the body of Christ. Volunteers Needed for Missionary Sisters of Charity Picnic Thursday, July 13 Once again this summer, we will be hosting a picnic for Missionary Sisters of Charity. Each summer, the sisters offer a summer camp for children in the Mexican Town section of Detroit. Every Thursday during the summer, the kids go on a field trip to a local church. Our Lady of Victory will be hosting a Mass and picnic for these kids on Thursday, July 13, at the Waterford Bend Park. Many hands are needed to make this picnic fun, successful and memorable. Our Lady of Victory s Dad s Club has generously offered to cook and serve the lunch on that day. Please Nancy Tolkacz or call the parish office, if you are able to assist. There is a sign up board in the Gathering Space. We need bakers, station supervisors, set up, serving and clean up crews and runners. We also need filled water balloons for the event. 100 New Beach Towels Needed We are collecting brand new beach towels through the first week of July. The towels will be given to the 100 kids who will be attending the July 13th picnic that we are hosting. Please place all towels in the designated bin in the Gathering Space. Look for this towel icon on the bin. Thank you for your generous support. Please note that if you can not go out to do the shopping but would like to assist monetarily, simply send your money or check to the office. Be sure to indicate on the envelope that it is for the July 13th picnic. Backpack & Summer School Supply Collection I can hear the kids complaining already. We are not even out of school and our church is collecting school supplies. Well the stores offer sales throughout the summer on supplies and I want to take advantage of them. In addition, we send some supplies back with the Sisters after the picnic on July 13th. Please place your donations in the bin in the Gathering Space. Look for this icon. It will direct you to the appropriate bin. Supplies needed: backpacks, #2 pencils, colored pencils, washable markers (8 or 10 pack), loose leaf paper (wide and college ruled), composition notebooks (wide and college ruled), 1-3 subject notebooks (wide and college ruled), erasers, pens (red, blue and black), yellow highlighters, rulers, glue sticks and glue bottles, pocket folders, scissors (blunt and pointed), crayons (24 or 48 count) and 1 inch 3 ring Looking for Gently Used Books This month, we will be collecting gently used children s books. The books will be donated to the children at our July 13th picnic. We accept new books, as well. We need books for 5-13 year olds. Please place your donations in the bin with the bookshelf icon on it. Thank you in advance for your support. Blood Drive Coordinator Needed We are in search of a new Blood Drive Coordinator. This volunteer schedules and coordinates our blood drives that take place three times a year- September, January and April/May, from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Please contact the Parish Office, if you are interested in helping us continue this wonderful event. If we get more than one coordinator we can split the shift in two. Think about it. The need is great. OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference #437 As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity, we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. If we can believe in this, then our lives can overflow in thanksgiving and praise! The Trinity is a relational God who gives and loves. This week, know that you bring hope to those in need by your compassionate monetary gift to OLV s St. Vincent de Paul Conference OR Through the gift of your time and talents as a volunteer with OLV s St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Please join us at the next meeting of OLV s SVdP Conference on Tuesday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m., in the Martha Mary Room. Civic Concern Targeted Items: JUNE Targeted items for this month are paper products, cereal, canned fruit, soup, and canned meats. Remember Michigan Bridge cards will not cover the purchases of paper products so toilet paper, paper towel, napkins and kleenex boxes are constantly in demand and in low supply. St. Christine s Food Pantry Gang June Collection Right now St. Christine s has an over abundance of peanut butter and jelly. For the month of June, we will only be collecting cans of tuna, salmon or chicken, as well as rice and noodle dishes please help us to continue to feed the hungry. Place all donated items in the designated bin near the stairwell leading to the Father Ernie Center. At the end of the month, we will be delivering the items to St. Christine s. However, this weekend we celebrate the great mystery of the Holy Trinity, three divine persons in one. The hymn O God, Almighty Father is a favorite that has been around since the 1950 s when Irvin Udulutsch, a Capuchin monk, composed the lyrics from a translawon by John Rothensteiner of a German hymn, author unknown, which first appeared in the Limburg Gesangbuch in Each verse of the hymn begins with a tribute to one of the Trinity and the refrain gives praise to all. This hymn is known as a Lesser Doxology hymn which praises the Trinity. The Great Doxology is the Glory to God in the highest, which we sing at the beginning of Mass and that which was sung at the birth of Jesus by the angels. Kathy Sanderson, Music Director 2017 Catholic services appeal The 2017 CSA pledge and prayer cards, have been mailed to you. This year the Archdiocese of Detroit has set our quota at $194,469. Some religious communities have a significant presence in southeast Michigan, which is home to many motherhouses and regional centers. PRISON MINISTRY by Bob & Sandy Harmer "I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was IN PRISON AND YOU CAME TO ME (Mathew 25:36). Ever wondered about your role in that last part? Well, here s your opportunity: The Life Issues Committee of St. James (which addresses life issues for ALL ages) has several members participating in visits to female prisoners of the Lower Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti. We go once a month for a 1-2 hour visit where we simply talk with the prisoner. You see, in many cases they have been abandoned by their former friends and family and have little or no contact with the outside world. We do carpool from Northville, if transportation is an issue and there is no cost to participate. We have been participating for the last 2-3 years and it has been a very eye opening and fulfilling experience for us. This program is not for everyone but if you are curious and want more details, please contact Bob and Sandy Harmer at bobharmer969@gmail.com.
