3 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 OCTOBER 1, 2017 On the Same Page Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends, As a child of French and French-Canadian parents, there were customs and traditions that my parents taught us to love. Over the years, I have written of some of these traditions and have shared with you the richness of my family s love of tradition and culture. Along with all of the rich, tasty foods and the traditional French wines, we shared around our table, the stories of family, friends, and even our family s home in France, we learned about our faith. As children, my siblings and I learned of my dad s deep abiding faith and his great love of the church, as well as my mom s unwavering belief and trust in God and her continuous desire to pray. We learned about the Holy Ones and about our patron Saints. But the Saint most frequently spoken of in our household, was Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower. On Sunday, October 1, the Church celebrates and remembers Thérèse of Lisieux. But who was Thérèse Martin? The answer to this question lie in Lisieux, an unremarkable town in Normandy that lost most of its center during heavy Second World War bombing raids (although, miraculously some might say, the buildings associated with Thérèse were unscathed). It is an hour-and-a-half by train from Paris, and the first thing you notice, as you step out of the station, is the vast, white basilica that dominates the skyline, built in the 1930s and 1940s after Thérèse was canonized, as a place of worship for the pilgrims who began to flock here. Thérèse's legacy is everywhere in Lisieux. In every gift shop plaster statues of Thérèse, dressed in a traditional Carmelite habit, clutching a crucifix and several stems of red roses are found on every shelf. This is the image of Thérèse that I know from my childhood. Thérèse's rise to fame has been remarkable. When she died, in the infirmary of the convent in Lisieux, on 30 September 1897, her life seemed so uneventful that her sisters in the community wondered what the prioress could write in the traditional obituary that was dispatched to neighboring convents. Then someone remembered that, a few years earlier, Thérèse had written a short autobiography, and it was decided to use that as the basis of a tribute. The tribute proved popular. Its fame spread from convent to convent, and a second print run of 2,000 was ordered. When the nuns were left with some copies, they resourcefully decided to sell them, and Thérèse's autobiography, The Story of a Soul, has never been out of print since. It has been translated into 50 languages, and millions of copies have been sold worldwide. What drew millions of readers to her story was the tone of Thérèse's relationship with God. At a time when the Catholic Church championed a God to be feared, and obeyed, she untied a portrait of an intimate simple love. For Thérèse, it wasn't so much that she needed God, as that God needed her. "We must not let slip," she wrote, "the smallest opportunity of giving Him joy...he is in such need of love." It was a radical approach to God. It was also her insistence that it was in the small things of life, the everyday frustrations, disappointments and challenges, as well as in the big heroic deeds, that a love of God could be demonstrated in her "little way", as she called it. Thérèse's approach to God was to appeal, I think, particularly, in the years soon after her death, to the soldiers of the First World War battlefields not far from Lisieux. For thousands of soldiers who found themselves facing an early death amid the humdrum boredom of daily life in the trenches, Thérèse's mixture of the ordinary and the spiritual and eternal, spoke volumes. She was known as "the Angel of the Trenches", and at the museum at Lisieux, hundreds of tokens of gratitude, including medals awarded for valor, brought here by soldiers, mostly French but some British or even German, who felt her words had guided them through the darkest of times. So today, join with me and pray: O Little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O Little Flower of Jesus, ask God to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands, (mention in silence here) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did in God's great love for me, so that I might imitate your "Little Way" each day. Amen. Blessings, Father Denis

It is a reminder that belief isn t a matter of saying yes or professing creeds, rather belief is action and follow-through. OLV s SVdP ministry is the channel which enables us, as Vincentians, to actively express Jesus love for those less fortunate in our community. In the summer of 2014, our SVdP Conference began with a small group of nine (9) Vincentians. Since its inception, a few have retired or relocated and we have been blessed with new Vincentians of various ages and skill sets. Currently, OLV s SVdP Conference has 19 members with a wide variety of backgrounds including: social work; nursing; engineering; human resources; accounting; business operations; corrections; physical therapy; and lay ministry. All of us are volunteers. Our Conference meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month with a focus on growing in friendship and spirituality by offering confidential person-to-person assistance to those in our community who reach out to us at their time of need. Since its establishment in August of 2014, our OLV SVdP Conference has fielded 170+ calls for assistance covering just under 300 family members and through your generous support distributed approximately $65,100 in financial assistance to those who were hurting. Thank you all for helping us be able to reach out and help others! If you are interested in learning more about OLV s SVdP Ministry, please join us at our next SVdP meeting on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m., in the St. John XXIII room. Please welcome Deacon Christopher Stark, the Executive Director of the Detroit Archdiocese SVdP Society as he celebrates Mass with us next weekend on Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8.

If you would like for your child to join us, please call the Faith Formation OfIice. Feast Day of Saint Francis Assisi Next Saturday, October 7, Father Denis will be here to bless your pet. Should you miss this occasion why not take the opportunity to say your own informal prayer as a family for your animal friend? They are special members of the family and coming together to thank God for them reafiirms in the minds of all their role in caring for them. Here is a prayer that you can use! Dearest God, Heavenly Father maker of all living creatures, we ask you to bless (name of pet), who brings so much joy into our lives. By the power of Your love, enable him (her) to live according to your plan. May we always praise You for all Your beauty in creation, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, Blessed are You, God, in all Your creatures! ( Scripture ReBlection for Families Making Choices This weekend s gospel is one that all families can identify with. One brother when asked to do something out right refuses only later to change his mind and do what was asked. The other brother immediately agreed to fuliill the request but never carried out his promise. None of us is perfect and there is not a person alive who has kept every promise made. But God does not hold that against us. What God is looking for is the struggle. Do we keep our hearts open to him and allow him to change us from within? Do we get up each time we fall and look to Him to help us on the path once again? Ours is a God of forgiveness and second chances. He just asks that we accept each fresh start and work hard at keeping our promise to start anew. As a family help each member learn of God s love through you. How to keep that promise? Just look to him for with him all things are possible. We just need to constantly set our heart with his! Mary Ellen Skene, Faith Formation Director MUSIC MINISTRY We see in today s gospel two sons that are asked by their father to do a task. One says no but changes his mind and the other says yes but fails to follow through. God is always asking us to follow the path of righteousness. When we sin, our answer is no. When we show compassion, kindness and love, we are doing what God asks and our answer is yes. Change Our Hearts was wripen by Rory Cooney (pictured right) to show that our lives are overwhelmed from two sides. We are either walking in the way of the Lord with eternal life as our reward or by the materialisuc and selfish ideals of today s world with no real reward or self sausfacuon. We must be willing to change our lives and put our feet in paradise. Cooney has been composing and recording for many years. He, with his wife, Theresa Donohoo, and friend Gary Daigle, travel and give concerts, workshops, and missions for parishes and dioceses throughout the country. Currently he is the director of liturgy and music of St. Anne Parish in Barrington, Illinois Kathy Sanderson, Director Altar Server Training Sunday, October 22, after 9:30 a.m. Mass All students in grades fifth through eighth are welcome to join us for the next training session for Altar Serving. Over the past few weeks, the middle school students have been busy learning and working on procedural assignments in the lab. Now that we are all working by grade level, the sixth grade students have been through a basic introduction to the science lab. The seventh grade students have been working in ecology and went outside to take a transect survey of organisms found on our school s property. The eighth grade students have started the microlife unit and are enjoying working with the microscopes for the first time. This Week s OLV SPORTS SCHEDULE ( Sandwich Board Letters!
