Godparents must be confirmed and regularly attending mass, registered in a parish, and attend a baptism class. Marriage: The Catholic parties must be a registered and a practicing member of the parish. 2 July 14th/15th, 2018 Page 1 Dearly beloved in Christ, I am so grateful for the wonderful reception and fellowship after each masses on my arrival. I was a little tired at the end of the weekend. I am learning the Parish and slowly settling into my Rectory as well. Meanwhile I am extremely grateful to the community for taking time to introduce yourself and offer your hearty welcome. Thank you for the reception organized by the Pastoral Council. I learned to drive around the other day to get a feel of the town. I found my gym and some good stores and nice restaurants. I hope all of you had a wonderful fourth celebration. I had fun with our annual 4th of July celebration. I did pray for Fr. Chuck as he takes new responsibility at the Cathedral as I have taken up here. Please know that the priests need prayers and support as they move into new avenues. We have to leave what we have built or had served in the name of the Lord and transition is painful. I struggle with it. The open arms and welcoming embraces make me feel welcomed. I am really proud of the angels and precious volunteers who give their best out here and try to organize and help the Liturgy and Church activities function. I am learning from you folks being together as a community of faithful. The main enemy of trust and perseverance is fear. Fear is to the Christian what kryptonite is to Superman: it saps our strength, so that we can no longer fulfill this mission of being Christ's witnesses in the world. Perhaps what we are most afraid of is what other people will think of us. When we're at a restaurant and the food arrives, we feel self-conscious about saying the blessing: What will everyone think of us? When we're at work and our co-workers are gossiping, making vulgar jokes, or even altering the books, we are afraid that if we don't join in they will start gossiping about us. When our buddies sneak off to "experiment" with drugs, drinking, and sex, we are afraid that our popularity will suffer unless we go along with them. This fear of what other people will say about us is a real fear. And God knows that it's hard for us to overcome it. But with his grace we can, as today's Readings show us. In the First Reading, Amos, a chosen prophet, was rejected by the very people that God sent him to. They refused to listen to his prophecy, insulted him, and sent him packing. And yet, he was a true prophet, beloved and chosen by God. And Jesus, when he gives his instructions to the Apostles in today's Gospel, actually tells them how to behave when people reject them - he knows ahead of time that it's going to happen! God is well aware that faithful Christians will not always receive a warm welcome in this fallen world. But he calls us to be faithful anyway, to trust and persevere in what is right and good even when it is not popular, because, as today's Psalm reminds us, that's how we will "see God's kindness and experience his salvation." May He help us to be more faithful to God and trust and persevere even when we are challenged. God Bless and have a blessed weekend. Fr.Tom Babu

3 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 EXCESSIVE EXUBERANCE There is a Russian fable about a very greedy bear. The bear found an acorn but then it wanted more so it kept digging, looking for more. One day he dug very deeply that the roots of the tree were cut into pieces. Finally, the tree spoke, Look above, stupid bear. I am the source of your food. If you destroy my roots, you will have no more acorns. Today s readings remind us of two things: God is the source of all blessings and we are called to live a life of simplicity to live a spirit of detachment. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that God is the source of all blessings: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessings in the heaven. Counting our blessings is one thing that we need to do regularly. Counting our blessings gives us the right perspective to see the things we have and not focus on what we lack. Often times we are quite good in noticing what we don t have and neglect what we have. We are like the stupid bear which keeps on digging for more acorns because we thought we don t have enough. In the process of endless digging for more acorns we end up taking unreasonable risks; we end up living an unsustainable lifestyle. Alan Greenspan, the former Fed chairman, said that the financial meltdown of 2008 was in way rooted in the excessive exuberance to look for more profit that resulted to unreasonable risk taking not just in banking and investment institutions but in individual consumers as well. In the excessive exuberance to search for more acorns we sought instant gratification and we failed to look beyond our own needs and beyond the present moment. Indeed, greed makes people do strange things. It s hard to imagine Linus and Lucy working together. But the excessive exuberance for more gifts successfully brought them together. And in our endless search for more acorns we end up cutting the roots of the tree that gives us the acorns. We end up relying more on our efforts and on the acorn and not on the tree that gives us the acorn. Counting our blessings allow us to see who we truly are---as blessed individuals, as beings totally dependent on the goodness of God. The most damaging effect of our greedy search for more acorns is that we end up interiorly poor or empty. Counting our blessings brings us back to God who alone can fill in our deepest needs; who alone can satisfy our deepest longings. In the gospel, Jesus sends his disciples to live with simplicity to live with the spirit of detachment from material things. It is not that material things are bad. They are good in themselves. It s the way we see and use these things that matters. We own these things and not the other way around. We use them in so far as they help us in becoming good human beings. We let go of them if they block us in becoming the persons that God created us to be. There is a danger of becoming attached to material things. We tend to define ourselves (or others) by what we (they) have or don t have. Today s readings remind us that Christian life is more about being rather than having. We need to regularly practice the disciplines of interiority count our blessings; strive to live with simplicity; labor for justice; be mindful of God s revelation through the Word and through others. Without these spiritual exercises it would be hard to flourish as human and as Christian. Without these spiritual exercises, our life is deeply impoverished even if materially we are rich a life without depth. Without these spiritual exercises we end up like Amaziah, the king s priest in the first reading who was serving himself more than serving God. Amaziah became attached to power and perks which are incidentals of the office of the priesthood, he was working for acorns for comfort and security, rather than God s will. Fr. H Praying with today s readings: 1. We ve been blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens. I thank God for all the blessings in life. This will help me to travel light in life. 2. I make today s responsorial psalm as my prayer: Lord, let us see your kindness.

I must admit that I have not gotten through the cards yet I m still trying to get unpacked from way too many boxes! Special thanks to those who helped me get packed up and to the Women s Society for the very nice reception following all of the masses my last weekend. The food was delicious and the decorations even had an Italian flair! All was much appreciated by me and the many who came to say a word of farewell. I have remembered you all in my first masses at the Cathedral and give thanks for my many years with you. I trust that we will see each other again and know that we keep each other in prayer. The columbarium is available to parishioners and immediate family only. Both Phase 1 and 2 are fully reserved at this point. Currently we have about ten parishioners ready to commit to Phase 3. If there are an additional ten who are ready to commit to the purchase of a niche, we may be ready to move ahead. If you are interested please contact Roland in the parish office for more details soon. Timing is important if we will be able to construct before the heavy winter months. The Religious Education Department will have registration meetings for First Year and Second Year First Communion and Confirmation preparation classes on August 14th, 16th and 22nd at 5:30pm. Registration fees are $60.00 per child. You only need to attend one of the registration dates. Please bring a copy of your child s baptismal certificate. Thank you!
