2 September 1st & 2nd, 2018 Page 1 Pope Francis says that we should not be lukewarm in our Faith. This kind of message from Pope Francis is a far cry from the image that many in the secular news media are attempting to portray of him. We often hear about the Pope Francis who speaks of God s love and mercy, and the Francis who says, rightly, who am I to judge, but there may be a reason we don t hear much in the secular press about the Holy Father s daily homilies or his messages at his weekly Wednesday General Audience, and perhaps that reason is because what we would get if we blended Pope Francis words that make the secular headlines with the things he preaches each morning at the Domus Sancte Marthae or his words at Wednesday Audience would be a much more complete picture of the message of Pope Francis and a fuller presentation of the Gospel message that he is being called to promote. To preach and speak of the dangers of being lukewarm in our faith is spreading a message that not many in the world or even in the Church will be keen to hear. It is important for us to hear this message because many of us have struggled with periods of what can only be characterized as lukewarm faith in our lives. The words of St. Paul in Ephesians which led to the Pope s reflections is a passage of Scripture that ought to give every one of us pause to think about whether what the epistle writer warns the Church of that day to avoid could apply equally in substance to us today. St. Paul warns the early Christians to whom he wrote to avoid sexual immorality, impurity, filthiness, even what the Revised Standard Version calls silly talk and what is rendered as filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking according to the English Standard Version, or, as the Douay-Rheims puts it obscenity or foolish talking or scurrility, which is to no purpose. How many of us have been guilty of this kind of thing in our lives? I will admit that I have, God forgive me my weaknesses and sins. However, Pope Francis seems to be reminding us that attempting to walk with Christ while acting and doing the way the world acts and does is the very definition of what it means to be lukewarm, a condition that the Scripture describes as one that causes the Lord to spew you out of my mouth. How many of us have gone to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, only to very purposefully go home and watch a television program or movie that is filled with filthy language, needless violence, promiscuous behavior, or all of the above? How many of us have filled our weeks with speech and action that is vulgar at the very least, and vile at worst? How many of us have wished ill upon our neighbors through the week and then enter into Mass on Sunday, singing with the rest of the People of God Glory to God in the Highest, and peace to his people on earth? In warning against lukewarm Christianity, Pope Francis is taking very direct aim at the hypocrisies that we are all guilty of in modern life, and he is saying to us that if we are going to loudly and proudly profess the faith, as we well should, we had better be prepared to live out that which we are professing. Scandals in the Church have been caused in our own day and time, and in every time, by men and women of God who professed Christ with their lips but did not live up to that profession in their lives. In a very real way, of course, none of us live our faith perfectly at all, and the mercy of God understands this by giving us a way to be free from our sins through the power of Christ s sacrifice on the Cross by way of the sacrament of Reconciliation. While understanding, then, that none of us are perfect, and none of us are immaculately conceived as the Blessed Mother was, we need to remember that lukewarm Christianity harms the Church because the whole world is watching us. If the fruit we produce is not good, how can we effectively spread the Gospel if we ourselves do not live it? Let us recommit ourselves to living lives more fully committed to the Gospel in all that we do. Let us try to be better Christians with great vigor and faith. Fr. 3 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 FORM RELIGION All religions have Tradi ons and tradi ons. Tradi ons are the heart and soul of that religion. Without those Tradi ons, the religion would be just another form religion. Tradi on is what Saint James was referring to in today s second reading: Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this to care for orphans and widows and their afflic on and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Jesus summarized the Tradi ons as, The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord your God is Lord alone! You shall love your God with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. The measure of our behavior in God s eyes is not our observance of law but the degree of love or compassion we have for others. The tradi ons are external prac ces that are created to help the believers in prac cing the Tradi ons. Today s gospel men ons some of them the purifica on of cups, the washing of hands, etc. These external prac ces were ini ally designed to help in the prac ce of being pure and undefiled before God and the Father. Since these tradi ons are humanly created and not divinely ins tuted like the Tradi ons, tradi ons are always secondary to the Tradi ons. The Tradi ons are unchanging. The tradi ons can change and need to change according to the culture and the signs of the mes. But over me, the later genera ons of believers could forget the ra onale behind the tradi ons. In the process, the tradi ons became more important than the Tradi ons or the tradi ons became separated from the Tradi ons. Those who see themselves as guardians of the religious tradi ons are also prone to policing others in their observance of tradi ons. They scru nize the washing of the cups, pots while neglec ng the evil inten ons that come from the human heart. That s the context of today s gospel. The tradi ons that were supposed to help in the prac ce of Love of God and neighbor became the center of Judaism. At that me, Judaism had become a form religion for some. The Way, as Chris anity was first known, was born out of Jesus desire to purify this form religion. But just like the Judaism that it ini ally tried to reform, Chris anity itself fell to the same tempta on to place the tradi ons at the center and the Tradi ons at the margins. Instead of focusing on the The Way (Tradi ons) of the Christ, me and again, the Church gets fixated with the ways (tradi ons) that are meant to help us walk The Way. It s like being a ached to a par cular path that Christ might have used at one point--crea ng all rules regula ng travel, pu ng up fences and fortresses to defend the path. One thinks of the tradi ons (including the language itself, La n) that were acquired when Chris anity was the official religion of the Roman Empire or when the Roman Catholic Church felt under siege during the Protestant Reforma on. But Christ has already taken another path. Rather than following the Christ, the Church gets stuck to a par cular path relishing the scent, the glow that the Christ le behind in that par cular path. Legalism and parochialism or small-mindedness can very easily infect our Chris an life. The good news is that the Spirit does not get red of reminding the Church of the primacy of the Tradi ons over the tradi ons. The Second Va can Council reforms are forceful expressions of such a reminder from the Spirit. And the reminder con nues because the Church is always in need of reforma on (semper reformando, according to Va can Council II). Tradi on comes from the La n word, tradere (to pass on, to hand over). With tradi ons we hand over beliefs, prac ces, rituals to the next genera on. But tradere is also the root word of traitor. The gospels noted that Judas handed over (betrayed) Jesus to the Pharisees. The tradi ons are meant to pass on Jesus and not to betray or hide him. When tradi ons hide rather than reveal Jesus, Chris anity becomes a mere form religion. Fr. H Praying with today s readings: 1. Be doers of the Word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. I wrestle with these words today. 2. I rest in the fact that Jesus knows and loves me as I am with all my contradictory impulses, desires and prac ces.
4 Ministry in Action Page 3 September 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The weekend of September 8 and 9, 2018 marks a very special and important second collection for our diocese; the annual collection for Seminarian Education. The collection assists the seminary formation of the five men of our diocese who responded to God s call to the vocation of priesthood. Vocations are being fostered within our diocese. The Vocations office currently works with seven men discerning a vocation from within our diocese. This is great news! In addition, the office also communicates with men from outside the diocese showing interest in joining us. This means we might have more men in the seminary starting next year. The cost of educating each seminarian per year is approximately $35,000, which covers tuition, room and board, and seminary fees. Other expenses such as medical insurance, language classes, and travel raises that cost to almost $50,000 per year per student. All of us support vocation through our prayers and through our financial contributions. All monies collected throughout the diocese remain here and go directly to pay for the seminary expenses. All of us, together, need to contribute to this fund to help form these men who are called to serve. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo JOIN IN A JOURNEY OF FAITH R.C.I.A.
