2 October 20th/21st, 2018 Page 1 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It was a wonderful coming together on Saturday last week as we celebrated the Feast of our Patroness St. Teresa of Avila with our Parish community with its diverse culture and traditions. The Prayers of the Faithful were done in six languages and we had a variety of foods from different parts of the world. It was delicious and wonderful. This brings forth the unity of the Parish in its diverse realities. I want to thank all of those who worked in groups as committees and individuals to make it colorful and festive. We had a count of 160 people besides the crew. May God bless you through our St. Teresa of Avila being part of this community. George Whalen will be speaking this week at all the masses reminding us of the Stewardship that we have as members of the Parish. We have needs and expenses that never take breaks or holidays while we take breaks and holidays. I ask you humbly to consider the needs of our Parish and ministries and prayerfully share your resources with our Parish. Your generosity has always been exceptional and we greatly appreciate it. Those who are new and have not registered in our Parish, please consider becoming a contributing member for (and to donate to) the upbuilding of our Parish Community. This Sundays Readings we can see that Jesus is our representative in heaven. He is there interceding for us, kind of like an ambassador intercedes for someone with a foreign government. And what is he interceding for? First of all, grace - the strength and light we need to deal with the challenges of today and tomorrow. And second of all, mercy - the total forgiveness and healing of our past. Healing our past is one of the things God most delights in doing. Maybe it's because it's one of those things that only God can do. Every few years, Hollywood comes out with a new film that fantasizes about time travel like "Terminator" or "Frequency" or Back to the Future." Why is that such a powerful and popular idea for us? Because we all have regrets about the past, in some form or another. We all recognize that there have been times in the past when we didn't live up to our best selves, when we wounded others, when we sinned or failed, when we let our self-centeredness take us down a destructive path. And all of us also recognize that there have been times in the past when we have been negatively affected by the actions and decisions of others. What if we could reach back in time and change those things, wiping away our failures and sins, fixing the wounds, rebooting relationships and restarting habits? We can't, because we are limited by time and space. But Christ can, because he has "passed through the heavens" and stands at the "throne of grace," beyond the limits of time and space. God's mercy is powerful enough to reach back into the past and re-dimension it in accordance with his wisdom - this is what re-demption is all about: not undoing the past, but redeeming it. We come to the Church as people who need God s mercy and forgiveness as Pope Francis says the Church is a hospital for sinners where we find the medicine of Grace and Forgiveness in the Sacraments. Have a Blessed weekend. Fr. Tom Parish Mission Statement We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!
3 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 A SPIRITUAL JET-STREAM As we move closer to the end of the Liturgical Year, the gospels remind us about the cold reali es of being a disciple of Christ. A three-part reflec on: The Two, The Ten and The One. The Two the brothers James and John, Zebedee s sons, were part of the inner circle of Jesus, together with Peter. Perhaps this was what mo vated the Two to request this special favor from Jesus. In Chinese there is the concept of guanxi (connec ons) which is important in business, in ge ng a job or in being promoted. The Two were privileged to be with Jesus at the Transfigura on so perhaps they thought they had guanxi so they felt en tled to this favor. The Two had power and pres ge in their minds. For them Jesus was the one who could grant them their desires. As soon as Jesus heard what the Two wanted, He knew that they did not know yet what it meant to be his disciple. He was the wrong star for the Two glory hounds. The Ten the rest of the apostles were probably indignant at the special request of the Two not because they disagreed with the Two but because the Two went behind their backs and so they felt cheated. Spiritual and social climbers normally upset other spiritual and social climbers. The drive to be on top requires that others be pushed down. Someone is bound to be angry when one s self-will is compromised by another person s self-will. When this happens, conflict erupts. The grab for glory by the Two triggers the grab for glory by the Ten. The One Jesus Himself. In response to the request of the Two, Jesus said: You do not know what you are asking. That s Jesus polite way of saying Sorry, dudes, I don t offer a spiritual jet-stream. Our second le er from Hebrews described Jesus as a great high priest. But when is Jesus a great high priest? When he is in the grand temple built with exo c marble and wearing expensive vestments and people bowing to him? No. Jesus is a great high priest when he is the priest and vic m, hanging stark naked on the altar of the cross while the crowd below mock and jeer at him. Jesus then added, Can you drink the cup that I drink? The Cup is a code word for the Cross and the Resurrec on, with greater emphasis on the Cross. Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. What a frustrated ending for the apostles grab for glory. Today s message of Jesus on the reali es of discipleship is in sharp contrast to what we o en hear from certain televangelists who preach the so-called gospel of prosperity. I am reminded of what a writer wrote about the difference between a false and true religion. The false religion says: Don t worry because God will not let the thing you worry about to happen. The true religion says: The thing you worry about might happen but don t worry because God is with you. God is with us. That is the glory that Jesus Emmanuel is promising us. He is with us in the joyful as well as sorrowful mysteries of our lives. He has been there on that road ahead of us. As the Le er to the Hebrews says: We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for mely help. Fr. H Praying with today s readings: 1. I take today s Responsorial Psalm as my prayer. 2. How in my life do I seek a spiritual jet stream? Where in my life do I avoid the Cross?
