2 October 27th/28th, 2018 Page 1 Dearly Beloved in Christ, A special thanks to George Whalen for his talks during all the masses. He helped us know where we should step in and be responsible stewards of our Parish. His message was reflected in the offertory collection last week. I do not have enough words to thank you for your generosity towards the necessary and immediate needs of the Parish. I do know that many of us who were giving to CSA and the Today Together Tomorrow Campaign had to prayerfully plan on their giving besides helping with our regular offertory collection. Thank you for your sacrificial giving. For many who are not able to support CSA or the Diocesan Campaign, I ask you humbly to support our regular offertory collection by putting 2 or 3 extra dollars to take care of the $10,000 short fall we had in the first quarter. I will make sure our expenses are also kept in check when we have necessary expenses to meet. May I also ask those who have not yet helped our Parish to prayerfully consider what you can do for your Parish as giving or service. Thank you for being an example of Good Stewardship. In this weeks readings, Jesus is passing by our lives, just as he passed by Bartimeaus on the streets of Jericho. And we, like the blind man, want to see him more clearly. We want to know him and to know how to follow him more closely that's why we came today. We are all blinded by sin. The Sacrament of Baptism was called the Sacrament of the Enlightenment in the early Church for good reason. We need to keep that light of living faith alive. The beloved disciple John instructs us in his first letter: "This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (1John 1: 5-7) Jesus knew well what Bartimaeus needed, but he wanted Bartimaeus to give expression to his need, to name his need. We too need to give expression to our needs. Fortunately, very few of us need physical sight, but we can be sure that all of us are in need of spiritual sight and insight. We can always assume that each of us suffer from spiritual blindness. There is 'stuff' that we should see that we are blind to. We may be blind to our own goodness or the goodness of others. We may be blind to our own sin or to the needs of others. We may be blind to the meaning of the scriptures or church teachings. Hence, a regular prayer of ours should be: "Lord, that I may see, Lord that I may see myself as you see me. Lord that I may see your plan for my life. I would appreciate it if you would often pray for me and our parish staff, that we may see God's plan for our parish. Bartimaeus received sight. Receiving physical sight must have been a wonderful gift but receiving the gift of faith is even still more wonderful. While all those around Jesus were blind as to who he was, Bartimaeus received the gift to see. As you know, Milton, the great poet, became blind during his life. After he came to accept his blindness, he said his being was filled with the light of God. "And he followed Jesus." This means that Bartimaeus became a disciple of Jesus. This is the constant call of Jesus to each of us to become his faithful disciple. The same Jesus who passed by Bartimaeus is alive today. The Good News is that no matter what has happened in our past, Jesus walks into the dusty streets of our lives this day. We simply need the eyes of living faith to see Him and the renewed heart to follow Him on the way. Prayer is the fuel which keeps living faith alive and keeps our eyes open to see. Wishing you a happy and fun Halloween. Fr. Tom Parish Mission Statement We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

3 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 THROW AWAY THE CLOAK The readings during the last Sundays of the Liturgical Year invite us to look more deeply at our Chris an life. This Sunday we pause to examine where our life is heading. Today s gospel tells us the story of Bar maeus to help us as we examine our lives. The gospel said that Bar maeus was begging by the roadside when Jesus passed by. Perhaps, Bar maeus was asking the same ques on as he sat begging by the roadside: Where is my life heading? Is this all there is to my life? At mes we are like Bar maeus blind, without the sight to see life as Jesus sees it. What then can we do when we find faith dying out in our hearts? How can we regain our spiritual sight? Is it possible to regain our faith? Bar maeus took important steps that would change his life. First, he threw aside his cloak. Throwing away the cloak is a symbolic way of saying that Bar maeus was naked that is he approached Jesus with all his vulnerabili es, with all his pain and longing. Throwing away the cloak was an act of surrender. That is what many of us need to do, we need to throw aside whatever obstacles that s fle our faith we need to be freed from whatever blocks us from following Christ more closely and so live life more fully. And so this Sunday we ask ourselves: Where in my life am I blind and therefore needs to be restored to sight? What is it that I need to throw aside to follow more closely the way of Christ? Do I know where my life is heading? We begin our examina on of conscience not with our blindness nor with those that block us in following Christ. That only ends up in guilt or depression. Rather we start with God s mercy. God s mercy leads us to gra tude and joy. Today s psalm proclaims: The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. So what are the great things the Lord has done for us? We could also use the first reading from Jeremiah which contains a call to praise God for the blessings of deliverance and restora on. Where and when have we experienced deliverance and restora on? We ponder on the concrete history of God s compassion for us we recall the many mes God has rescued us out of troubles caused by our own ego; we look back at those mes that God has led us out of dead-ends caused by bad moral decisions. We need to look at those resentments caused by hurts and bad decisions. Only when we are filled with gra tude and trust in the Lord who has done great things for us can we start looking at our own blindness and whatever blocks us in following Christ more closely. Moved with gra tude, then we can throw aside our cloaks and run towards God s mercy. Fr. H Praying with today s readings: 1. I ask God to heal me from my own blindness. 2. I reflect on the cloak that I need to let go so that I could follow Christ more closely and live life more fully.
