Godparents must be confirmed and regularly attending mass, registered in a parish, and attend a baptism class. Marriage: The Catholic parties must be a registered and a practicing member of the parish. Please call the parish office and set up an appointment with a priest at least 6 months prior to your desired wedding month. Reconciliation (Confessions): Saturday: 2:30-3:30 pm or by appointment. 2 July 7th/8th, 2018 Page 1 Why is it so hard both to hear and also to heed God's word? One reason is that God loves us too much to let us settle for spiritual mediocrity. He is always calling us to spiritual excellence, also known as holiness. But the pursuit of excellence always involves breaking out of a comfort zone. For the people of the Old Testament, being faithful to the words of the prophets meant breaking away from popular forms of idolatry. It meant being different from their neighbors - that was going out of their comfort zone. For the people of Nazareth, heeding Christ's words meant admitting that Jesus was superior to them, which rubbed them the wrong way. Today we face the same challenges. Accepting, following, and defending Catholic teaching makes us different than our neighbors. We don't entertain ourselves with drunkenness, drugs, and promiscuity. We don't respond to marital difficulties with no-fault divorces. We put our principles before our popularity and our faith before our feelings. Following God's commandments means admitting that God is superior to us, that he has rights over us, that we need him and depend on him. In today's world of self-sufficiency, technological achievement, and moral relativism, those are counter-cultural convictions; they shatter our psychological comfort zones. But that's what it means to have faith. St Mark tells us that because the people of Nazareth lacked faith, Jesus "was not able to perform any mighty deed there." If we want to unleash God's power in our lives, we must take the risk of faith, of both hearing and heeding God's word. In this Mass, Jesus is renewing his commitment to us. As he does that, let's renew our commitment to him, asking for the grace to love him enough to accept his costly invitation to spiritual excellence, today and every single day of our lives. It was hard for the people of the Old Testament to hear and heed God's word. It was also hard for the people of Jesus' home town to do so. If that's the case, we should not be surprised if there are seasons and situations in our own lives when we also find it hard. Our fallen human nature is like spiritual gravity; it's always pulling us towards following the easy path of comfort and self-indulgence, to go with the flow of popular culture. Today we can ask ourselves: What has God been saying to us that we have been resisting? It may have something to do with a relationship - someone we need to forgive, or ask forgiveness from, for example. It may be bringing some long-hidden sins to the fountain of God's mercy in confession. It may be some part of Church teaching that the world around us disagrees with, and which we have not accepted or tried to understand more deeply. Or it may be an interior nudge from the Holy Spirit to go deeper in our prayer life, to take a step towards our true vocation, or to make a change of direction in some other way that has long been weighing on our hearts. God's wisdom, power, and goodness are infinite and unbreakable. When he asks us to change, in little ways or big ways, it's always because he loves us and he is drawing us towards spiritual excellence. The residents of Nazareth resisted that draw, those changes, and as a result, Jesus "was not able to perform any mighty deed there." Today, as Jesus renews his commitment to us in this Mass, let's promise to hear and also to heed him, every day, so that his mighty deeds will have free rein to work wonders in our lives. 3 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 They Thought They Knew Him Well Accompanied by his disciples, Jesus went back to his hometown, Nazareth. As was the right of any devout Jew, he gave the homily in the synagogue on a Sabbath. The gospel said that many who heard him were astonished. They were astonished at the wisdom with which he spoke and of the miracles they had heard that Jesus performed. What amazed them even more was the fact that they thought they knew well Jesus, Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? Because they thought they knew him, they refused to accept him. The words of Jesus might be new to them but they saw the same outward appearance of Jesus. They had already made up their minds even before they heard the words of Jesus. Indeed, familiarity breeds contempt. Contempt is a cousin of bi erness. Contempt is also a hard work. Mark wrote about this incident not to sa sfy the curiosity of his readers. This is Mark s warning to Chris ans who might also reject Jesus precisely because they believed they knew Jesus best. Like the people of Nazareth, we too fail to hear the message from God because we can be blinded by the familiarity of the messenger. God constantly speaks to us through people we know and we don t know, through things that happen to us, through situa on in which we find ourselves in. Many mes we don t recognize God s voice, we fail to listen to God s message to us because God is speaking through someone we thought we know well, or someone we don t like, or someone different to us. The gospel said that because of the contempt of many people in Nazareth, Jesus could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Because of our refusal to recognize Jesus in a par cular person or situa on, we too could block out God s offer of grace and love. And yet it was through this par cular person or situa on that God was trying to reach us. Because of our a achment to our own ideas or because we tend to hold on to our preconceived ideas without opening ourselves to the newness of the message of the person or the situa on, we too can reject Jesus. Praying with today s readings: 1. How do we receive Jesus, we who believe that Jesus is ours? Are we open or indifferent to the newness of his message for us? 2. Jesus expressed surprise at the lack of faith in his hometown. How is my faith in the midst of a world that has con nued to grow in maturity? Is my faith mature enough to face the challenges of a mature world? Or is it s ll infan le and superficial? The Gabriel Project is a parish-based outreach ministry offering hope and assistance to any woman experiencing a crisis pregnancy. This ministry offers compassionate support to pregnant women in difficulties, regardless of their family background, economic status, or religious or no religious faith. The columbarium is available to parishioners and immediate family only. Both Phase 1 and 2 are fully reserved at this point. Currently we have about 10 parishioners ready to commit to Phase 3. If there are an additional 10 who are ready to commit to the purchase of a niche we likely may be ready to move ahead. If you are interested please contact Roland in the parish office for more details soon. Timing is important if we will be able to construct before the heavy winter months. Thanks to all who bring food every week. It is used for those who need help in the parish. These are difficult times for many. You help good folks to eat and to maintain their dignity. Thank you! Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration on Monday evenings from 4:45pm until 6:45pm and on Thursdays 7:30am until 1:00pm.
