2 February 17th/18th, 2018 Page 1 As Church we observe this holy season of Lent each year to give us the opportunity to look into our lives of faith and evaluate how we are doing. As ashes were put on our forehead we heard, Repent and believe in the Gospel. If we believe our lives should reflect the values Jesus teaches in the gospels. There has been much emphasis over the past several years about not giving something up for Lent but actively doing something different to develop your faith life, improve your relationships or make the world a better place. I don t think this needs to be an either/or decision for Lent but perhaps a both/and. One of the values Jesus teaches and lives out is sacrifice. By giving something up for Lent we consciously change our routine and curb our desires, not just to say that we did it but to keep our minds fixed on this holy time and the longing for the kingdom of God. The discipline involved in giving something up helps us in the greater discipline we call discipleship by calling us out of our own desires and into the greater needs of others. It opens up for us another avenue of giving. For example, the simple act of foregoing doughnuts on the Sundays of Lent can re-direct our thoughts and giving to Operation Rice Bowl and the work of Catholic Relief Services around the world. Similarly, some will come to daily mass during the week or the Stations of the Cross on Fridays or the series on prayer on Thursdays or any number of other devotions during this time to foster a deeper relationship with the Lord. While we may not think of those things as giving up something there is an element of giving time to God in prayer which we may not otherwise do. The draw for Lent should be in deepening our love and relationship with God and what God has done for us. The Lenten Soup Supper on Fridays are certainly about fellowship with one another and growing closer together as Church, not only for ourselves but to reach out to others. The simplicity of the meal is to connect us to the people who eat simple meals year round because it is all they have. The goal is that we come out different at the end of Lent, perhaps more compassionate, more aware of the gift of our faith and the call to discipleship. Some of our parishioners have put forth a Lenten observance based on Pope Francis wonderful encyclical on caring for the earth. Laudato Si is a beautiful document that summarizes our Catholic teaching on caring for one another and all creation. I would recommend it to you as Lenten reading. An insert in today s bulletin highlights Lenten sacrifices that address some of the issues Pope Francis addresses to us and I encourage us, as a parish, to engage the Environmental Program suggested in as many ways as possible. Whatever we choose to do for Lent it ought to make us better disciples of Jesus Christ and witnesses of the love he proclaims in the Gospel. May we not lose hope but strengthen one another in committed discipleship. One example to committed discipleship is participation in our diocesan capital campaign. Last weekend I didn t have the numbers but I m happy to report that on our pledge weekend we added 75 donors and almost $60,000 in gifts and pledges. Thank you to all those who stepped up. The Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) will be coming up next month and some are still struggling with the difference between the CSA and the diocesan capital campaign. The Today Tomorrow Together campaign responds to the long-term and extraordinary needs of the diocese, while the Catholic Services Appeal helps fund the ongoing regular ministerial expenses. A major objective of the Today Tomorrow Together campaign is to establish an endowment to provide supplementary funding for those ministerial expenses, which are funded annually by the Catholic Services Appeal, over the long-term. The endowment will strengthen and empower our church to stand prepared to serve future generations of Catholics. The Catholic Services Appeal is much like our Sunday offertory. It is the annual collection by the Diocese of Reno to fund the ministry offices. The offices include Youth and Young Adult Ministries, Ethnic Ministries, Lay Ministry Formation and Leadership Program, Faith Formation and Catechetics. It also plays a large part in funding our seminarians and permanent diaconate program. The Catholic Services Appeal will continue this year and for years to come. The Today Tomorrow Together campaign is asking for an extraordinary commitment from each of us for the next three years. After the three-year commitment, the Today Tomorrow Together campaign will cease. Thank you for whatever role or roles you are able to play in this important outreach of the Diocese of Reno. I will be doing a teaching mass at the 7:45am mass on March 4. This is an opportunity to learn what we do in the mass and why. As a result, please be aware that the mass will go a bit longer than usual. Last year I did this both at the 4:00pm Saturday mass and at the 5:00pm Sunday mass and the people found it very helpful in growing in their understanding of the mass. It also responds to one of the directives of the Second Synod of the Diocese of Reno which calls for a teaching mass to be offered during the various seasons of the year. All are welcome to come to this mass, listen and learn. Blessings to you all this 1 st week of Lent! Fr. Chuck
3 First Sunday of Lent Page 2 Dipped in a Dye The ashes on our forehead last Wednesday reminded us of that day we were dipped in a dye. To bap ze (Bap zein in Greek) literally means to dip ( to dip in a dye was a common use) or immerse. In the early Church, Bap sm was always full immersion in water and not simply pouring water on the head which is common these days. But whether it is through dipping or pouring, Bap sm remains to be the sacrament of rebirth, of regenera on. Dipping in a dye is a good metaphor for the experience at bap sm when the Chris an is dipped into the indelible dye of Christ, that is, when the Chris an is immersed into the passion, death and resurrec on of Christ. The fruit of the dipping is not just the washing of the dirt but a new life, a new iden ty in Christ. One is reminded of the branding of a calf when it is permanently marked with the iden ty of its owner. In a way, what the owner is saying is, Know by this mark that you are mine, no ma er what. You might get lost, but you are s ll mine. The same is true at bap sm. The minister at the beginning of bap sm says, I claim you for Christ I now trace the sign of cross on your forehead God is saying to the bap zed You are mine no one, nothing can separate you from me not even your sin. God is not saying, Well, if you d clean up once in a while maybe I would hug you. So the dye of Christ is indelible. It is permanent just as the covenant entered into by God with Noah is permanent. The covenant remains valid down to us today. It has never been revoked no ma er how many mes Israel turned its back to God. God s hug has never been revoked no ma er how much dirt we pile up on us. As Peter said in today s second reading, As Christ suffered for sins once for all and bap sm, which this [Noah s covenant] prefigured, now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrec on We remember that irrevocable hug, that indelible dye of Christ as we begin Lent. It s because of that hug, it s because of that indelible dye that we are moved to clean up this Lent. It s not the other way around that we need to clean up so that God would hug us. A good way to clean up is to peel away the dirt that has tainted the dye of Christ. And what would that dye of Christ be? That would be the color of compassion, the smell of solidarity and the look of love. And so we begin Lent by looking at our own compassion, our sense of solidarity for others and the call to love. The Biblical word for sin literally means to miss the target. How have we missed the target through our lack of compassion and solidarity, through our failure to love? Fr H Praying with today s readings: 1. I ask God to reveal to me how I have missed the target through my a tudes and ac ons. 2. The Jews call the tes ng of Abraham as the Binding the Binding of Isaac and above all the Binding of God to Israel. I ask for greater fidelity and trust to that Binding. Parish Mission Statement We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

This week, in Iraq, we encounter Majd and his family, people forced to flee violence, searching for stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.
