4 Pastor s Letter January 6/7 Dear Parish Family, The Challenge of Epiphany Today s feast of the Epiphany celebrates the visit of the Magi to the newborn king. As a biblical story, the legend of the Magi with its kings, star, and gifts presents a pleasing image of mysterious visitors, celestial events, and first gifts to the Child Jesus. But if you probe a little deeper into the story, the message of Epiphany is challenging to us all. Only Matthew s gospel tells this story. There is not a mention of it in any other. Matthew s gospel is the most Jewish of all the gospels. Matthew is writing mainly for an early community of Jews who were following Jesus and wanted to be sure that he was really the messiah. This is why Matthew goes to great length to prove that Jesus is of the line of David and also is the fulfillment of the scriptures. In this story, however, Matthew is taking the message a step further. Those who seek the child are not only the people of Israel but also strangers from the east, who lived beyond the boundaries of the Promised Land. The gift they have come to cherish is also meant for many others. And this is part of God s plan. To take a lesson from this, we might think of the blessings and benefits we cherish in our own land. The dignity of our freedoms, benefits, and protections are not only our blessing they are meant to be shared and given to others. This is a new and challenging way of thinking. Again on this point, Matthew is careful to remind us that no one who seeks Jesus will be left unchanged. The Magi are warned that what they have found will challenge the order of their world and so they return home by another way. They and their world are different now because of Jesus. We all find the gifts very engaging. The Magi give that which is most precious to them, the symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What in our day would be the right gifts to give to the Lord? What is it that God most desires? At the end of Jesus ministry, in the passage before the journey to Jerusalem, Matthew recalls Jesus words on the ultimate judgement of the nations. Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs? And Jesus answers: As long as you did it for one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it for me. The Epiphany challenges us to recognize that all God s gifts are meant to be shared, and shared beyond our usual assumptions of who belongs to us and who we are called to serve. Quite a challenge from these visitors from the East! Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Its Getting Cold! The St. Bernard League is Here to Help Year round residents know what a beautiful time each season in the East End can be, but for many senior citizens the cold of winter and storms brought by spring and summer can be frightening and isolating. For some Parishioners the isolation may not be from weather related issues, but from the reality of family living and working far away. You can help! We hope that you and your family will consider signing up to adopt a member of our parish community, and partner with them through each season, or when the red flags go up. You would be responsible to reach out to your assigned neighbor and be a lifeline for them during the long days of winter, or the heat of the summer sunshine. There is no deadline or cutoff period to join this Ministry. You can call the Office of Parish Social Ministry at any time to either volunteer your time or to be added to the list. ***************************************************** I/we could use help in any season. 9 Knights of Columbus Southampton Council #1967 Are sponsoring a free bus to St. Patrick s Cathedral, New York City January 21, 2018 Annual Pro Life Mass Archbishop Timothy Dolan Mass 10:15 AM Mass begins at 10:15 and busses will leave SHJM at 6:45 AM and St. Rosalie at 7:15 AM To reserve a seat please contact Peter Nikolich at Home: Mobile: E: pnikolich32@gmail.com Reflections On the Gospel January 7, 2108 For many, if not all, of us, these are very dark times, not just because of winter darkness, but because of how things are politically, economically, and socially; yet, God is with us. Sunday s Feast of the Epiphany is a feast of God s manifestation to us in human form. God s light truly does shine for all of us, regardless of nationality, race, class, or religion. The Magi came from a distant land, an educated and apparently wealthy class, and a non-jewish faith. God drew them to Jesus despite their being foreign, and they accepted the invitation humbly and generously. They recognized something extraordinary in Jesus, and they teach us to do the same. But do we recognize God s manifestations in our contemporary world? Do we see Jesus in people who are different from ourselves? Do we approach with humility and generosity? Do we appreciate how extraordinary God s revelation is in creation, in one another? Do we welcome the light, or do we hide in the darkness? Let s do our best to see God s Epiphany here and now, and let s be manifestations of God s light to others.
