Pastor s Letter Ash Wednesday What to do about Lent? Lent begins today and with it comes an annual question for Catholics: What am I giving up for Lent? Smoking cessation, weight loss, overconsumption of candy are the usual culprits but with a little bit of thought Lent can provide us with meaningful growth in our spiritual lives. The idea behind fasting, the giving up part of Lent, is to use physical hunger or some other feeling of want or desire to alert us to a more profound hunger the hunger for God and for the things of God. We fast for an hour before the Eucharist on Sunday so that the little bit of hunger we feel will remind us of the spiritual hunger for the blessing of God s presence received in the Eucharist. Fasting, of course, can go wrong or even turn selfish. On Ash Wednesday the Gospel reading recounts Jesus warning his disciples to be sure to wash their faces and groom their hair when fasting so that only God will notice their sacrifice. There was to be no bragging about fasting among his disciples. A reading from Isaiah raises the issue of those who become bitter and grumpy because of their sacrifice. To them and to us Isaiah speaks of a fast that is pleasing to God: This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. I find Isaiah s words to be a profound challenge. It might be tough to give up candy but it is surely more meaningful, and much more difficult, to give up something God would like us to give up. Fasting from prejudice, from resentment toward a friend or family member or buying things that are of little necessity when others are lacking food, shelter, and clothing are ways to respond to Isaiah s challenge. Maybe Lent is a good time to give up a bad habit like gossip, stirring the pot, or envious talk. Or perhaps it is not a giving up at all but a beginning we need like beginning to be generous, or patient, or kind. The lesson about lent that I have learned over the years is: What is the fast that God wants? instead of: What would I like to give up for Lent? Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Cinema Basilica All are invited to join us Saturday Mornings at 10:00 AM in the Chapel Room of the Parish Center to our ongoing Cinema at the Basilica series. Bring a friend and a snack or two. Each film is followed by a short discussion. A wonderful to share with old friends while meeting new friends. Sponsored by the Adult Faith Formation and Office of Social Ministry. Please feel free to contact Jeannine Rose at ext 317 with any questions or to reserve a seat. Saturday, February 20, :00 AM in Chapel Room of Parish Center Movies at the Basilica In 1946, Jackie Robinson is a Negro League baseball player who never takes racism lying down. Branch Rickey is a Major League team executive with a bold idea. Rickey recruits Robinson for the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the unspoken color line as the first modern African American Major League player. As both anticipate, this proves a major challenge for Robinson and his family as they endure unrelenting racist hostility on and off the field, from player and fan alike. As Jackie struggles against his nature to endure such abuse without complaint, he finds allies and hope where he least expects it. And lets his bat, base-stealing and love of the game do his talking. Winner of the Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award. A strong cast with Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Lucas Black and Nicole Beharie. Saturday, March 12, :00 AM in Chapel Room of Parish Center He was a just man, appointed by God to be the husband of Mary and the chosen father of Jesus. But there is more to St. Joseph than his familiar role at the center of the salvation message. He was a prayerful man, an exemplary worker and a true model of authentic manhood. This powerful film explores all aspects of St. Joseph and the many ways he reflects the nature of God, combining stunning artwork and interviews with Catholic leaders. Saturday April 9, :00 A.M. in Chapel Room of Parish Center Pope John Paul II referred to the Holy Eucharist as "the greatest treasure of the Church," and yet even many devoted Catholics have a very limited understanding of this powerful sacrament. This book will change all that. The reader will come away with a completely new awareness that the Eucharist is not just about receiving Communion; it's about transforming your daily life. Deeply based on the Scriptures, the writings of the Saints, and the teachings of our two most recent Popes, this profound and remarkably readable book will introduce you to some of the "hidden" truths of the Eucharist truths that have always been embraced by theologians, saints, and mystics, but have rarely been passed on to the average person in a meaningful way. In 7 Secrets of the Eucharist, these truths are finally made accessible to all, as author Vinny Flynn shows how each reception of Holy Communion can be a life-changing experience.

The Fast of Isaiah 58 During lent you might wish to think of fasting as something with a positive purpose. In other words Lent is more than giving things up. The prophet Isaiah spoke of this as a fast that is pleasing to God. This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: Releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! Fasting During Lent Fasting and Abstinence in Lent Lenten Fast and Abstinence All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday to limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals (which do not together equal a full meal) on each of those days. Water may be taken at any time. Penance The obligation to do penance and to observe the penitential seasons is a serious one. Those whose health or work would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence, and individuals consciences should guide them in this matter. However, no one should hold himself lightly excused, and another penitential practice should be substituted by those who cannot fast or abstain. A more serious reason is considered necessary to opt out of the observances on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday than for the other Fridays of Lent. Easter Duty All of the faithful who have received First Holy Communion are obliged to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, normally during the Easter Season a period which in the United States extends from the first Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday. TO KEEP A TRUE LENT. by Robert Herrick IS this a fast, to keep The larder lean? And clean From fat of veal and sheep? Is it to quit the dish Of flesh, yet still To fill The platter high with fish? Is it to fast an hour, Or ragg d to go, Or show A downcast look and sour? No ; tis a fast to dole Thy sheaf of wheat, And meat, Unto the hungry soul. It is to fast from strife, From old debate And hate ; To circumcise thy life. To show a heart grief-rent ; To starve thy sin, Not bin ; And that s to keep thy Lent.

Stations of the Cross We remember the road to Jesus death and link his journey to our own through this beautiful devotion. Come and pray with us Each Friday during Lent after the noon mass 12:30 PM Living Stations of the Cross Good Friday, March 25 th, at 7:30 PM in the Church This is a wonderful opportunity for your Lenten and Holy Week journey! Our parish community comes together-led by our young people, our Music Ministries and members of our parish community who share their own personal experiences on this most holy and solemn night. The celebration includes the Veneration of the Cross. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on the day before Easter Day. We skip Sundays, when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on Holy Thursday, with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord s Supper. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that does not involve starvation or dehydration. Quite often, our bodily appetites control our actions. The purpose of fasting is to make your bodily appetites your servant rather than your master. 10 Presentation Hymn As Grains of Wheat As grains of wheat are gathered in we come together; from lives apart we bring our hearts to make one whole. Refrain For many are we, and broken we've come, but we shall become one. Ash Wednesday Liturgy of the Eucharist Each grain must fall and give itself: it first is broken; then, joined with others, makes one body and one bread. Refrain From many feilds the harvest comes to feed the hungry; the world cries out to taste the goodness of the Lord. Refrain Your harvest, Lord, is gathered in; We stand before you to be your bread, to be your body in the world. Refrain Communion Hymn My Song Will Be for You My song will be for you forever. You, the music in my heart. For your love is all around me, and your goodness always here. You have clothed me in your promise, You, my love, my light, my friend. You, the way and path before me. You will lead and guide me home. Refrain: My song will be for you forever, you the music in my heart. Closing Hymn Change Our Hearts I am here to be your servant; you anoint me with your love. You will hold me in my longing, all my hope in your embrace. Refrain With your voice you sing within me. You, the one who knows me well. You, my joy, my life, and blessing. When you call you know my name. Refrain I will pledge my love forever. I will call your name out loud. I will reach my hand out to you, and I know you'll reach for me. Refrain Change Our Hearts this time, your word says it can be. Change our minds this time, your life could make us free. We are the people your call set us apart, Lord, this time, change our hearts.

From Religious Education Director :: Jennifer Ferrantino fasting, and giving. Today is Ash Wednesday, we begin Lent, the season that asks us to stop and be aware. Lent is a gift that the Church in her wisdom celebrates every year. It is a gift of time, a gift of contemplation, and a gift of quiet so that we may listen to the Word, who whispers to us to come back to the God who created us. It encourages us to turn away from the noise and over-indulged appetites so that we may understand the hunger that can be filled with the grace of God only by prayer, So how are we going to bring Lent into our homes? What are we going to do different at this time of year? We are asked to pray, fast and give. Can we make time to pray daily? Is there time for that? A few minutes can make a big difference. Fasting? Can we fast from things like gossip, criticism, or negative attitudes? Can we give of ourselves to others, make time to speak with family members, old friends, or new friends? Share a smile and find joy? Can we give to the poor, the home bound, or the infirmed? Sometimes the hardest to give is our time. How are we going to challenge ourselves and our families this Lent? Reminding children to do the simple things helps them become aware of the simplicity of the Gospel and in turn helps the adults too. Confirmation Enrollment Mass has been rescheduled for Saturday February 27 th at 5 PM Mass First Holy Communion Families will meet our Teaching Mass and workshop Saturday March 5 at 10 AM. Lenten Activities: Along with fish on Fridays how about family meal prep time each member is asked to give or make something for the meal together. It is a great time to start growing something inside the house, this helps children become aware of the waiting period. Waiting for new life, waiting for Easter Sunday. What are your Lenten traditions? What has made Lent meaningful for you? Religious Education Confirmation Date: May 31, 2016 Please contact me with any questions or jferrantino@shjmbasilica.org Lent is a great way to share with our children the beauty of our Faith.
