4 Pastor s Letter June 22/23 On Education Dear Parish Family, It seems these days that many delightful parts of growing up are valued primarily for their future economic benefit. Sports like soccer and lacrosse are important not for the fun of it all but because they might lead to grants and scholarships. Volunteer service is important because it looks good on one s résumé and can help land a job or gain admission to a college. And once in college, education itself becomes the path to a career and financial security. Taken in that way, I suppose my own educational experience was a disaster. All those dollars and years spent on a degree in physics only to end up with an almost immediate switch to a new vocation priesthood. Of course from today s point of view I did not have that much invested. My whole college journey, all four years, was less than five thousand dollars! But never mind the money. The idea of college, or any other educational pursuit, as a place to learn how to make a living is tragically misleading. Studying the history of our world, its diverse cultures and religions, the discoveries of science, the thinking of great scholars and philosophers is the best thing that can happen to a young person. This kind of knowledge is not a means to an end but a foundation on which a person can build a life. Everything we learn makes us deeper, more interesting, and more appreciative people, including being a priest with a more than passing acquaintance with Einstein s theory of relativity! Besides, it makes for interesting dinner conversation. Education, then, is more about becoming a person than finding a job or making a living. From that perspective, here is some advice for the class of 2013 whether you are graduating from college, high school, or pre-school. Take your time. Soak it all in. Keep being a learner. And don t worry. Know that the answer to the great question, whatever it is that you should be about in your life, will come to you. Such thoughts about education are very Christian. After all, the Christian idea is not to figure out your own life but to discover it and to allow God to lead you. 7 Welcome to our New Religious Education Director Jennifer Ferrantino Since Sister Assunta announced that this spring she would conclude her ministry here as Director of Religious Education we have been looking for someone to take up the awesome work of educating our young people in the faith. Sr. Assunta did a wonderful job and finding a good person to lead us would not be easy. This week I am happy to announce that Jennifer Ferrantino will be joining us as director beginning this July. Jennifer has an excellent background in education and in human development. She will shortly be completing a degree in Psychology from Stony Brook University. Jennifer and her family have been active members of our Sacred Hearts family for many years and I know she will bring many good ideas and resourcefulness to the work of faith formation here in our parish. Please join in welcoming her and supporting her as she begins this most important ministry. During the next two weeks we are invited to join with fellow Catholics around our diocese and country in prayer for the preservation of our first amendment right to the free exercise of religion. This right has been threatened by certain government laws and initiatives which violate the freedom of conscience of Catholic ministries in areas such as health care. 10 Annual Summer Party under the Tent August 31 There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the return of summer! This year we will have something very special to look forward to: the return of the Sacred Heart End of Summer Tent Party! I have heard so much about this historic SHJM event and I am delighted that Pat Corrigan and Joan Heinz have graciously offered to chair the party. This year our party will honor Mary Steinbrecher, one of the party s most enthusiastic supporters over many years. Mary passed away this past fall but not before encouraging all of us to renew this event as a way for the parish and community to come together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the joys of summer in Southampton. Upcoming Events Raffle Tickets now on sale: Ticket sales are now ongoing for Sacred Hearts New and Improved Super Raffle. This year we will be selling even more tickets up to 500 will be sold so we won t run out and you won t be disappointed! More prizes, 10 in all, so your chances of being a big winner will now be 1 in 50 instead of 1 in 200 as in the past. Tickets will still be $100 and you can purchase them on you own or take a chance or chances with a group of friends to increase your chances of winning. 11 Our Lady of the Hamptons Catholic elementary education is alive and well in Southampton! Our Lady of the Hamptons School continues to grow and develop outstanding academic, athletic and fine arts programs for students in pre-school through grade 8. Having completed the gymnasium section of the newly constructed Wellness Center, the school is actively seeking investors and donors to help with the completion of the classroom wing of the new Wellness Center. Information about memorial opportunities available. Tours of the new building can be easily arranged. A full range of remedial and enrichment courses in math and Language Arts will be offered at OLH during July. Space is limited, but is also open to students not attending OLH. Call for details. An outstanding pre-school program, geared to the Common Core learning standards is available at the OLH-St Rosalie s campus in Hampton Bays. Three and four year old programs are available. 14 Kid s Page Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 23, 2013 Sharing the Gospel Jesus warned his disciples that people were going to make him suffer and die. He said that the Son of Man would rise to life. Jesus did die to save us from our sins. And he did rise from the dead. Each time we sin, Jesus forgives us if we are sorry. We are renewed each day by God's love. The cross of Jesus is a reminder to us of God's great love. Prayer Jesus, you died for me to be forgiven. Thank you.
