4 Pastor s Letter Christmas 2015 Dear Parish Family The Innkeeper One of my favorite Christmas stories is about a boy who wanted to be one of the actors in his parish s Christmas pageant. The boy had many educational, intellectual, and emotional challenges that would make it difficult for him to carry out a role. So the director chose him for an easy part he would be the innkeeper and he would have just one line to remember: There is no room at the inn. Everyone tried to pull together to help him with the task. The director gave him extra time in practice. His school teachers worked with him every day. Every night his parents rehearsed that line over and over again. His parents were filled with apprehension that at the crucial moment his disabilities would get the better of him. But he so wanted to take part. Finally, the big day arrived. Mary and Joseph walked up to the inn and knocked on the door. The innkeeper as precisely and perfectly as any Broadway actor spoke his famous line: There is no room at the inn! Everyone, especially his parents, slumped back into their seats in relief. He had done it! But then, just as Mary and Joseph turned away in disappointment, it seemed as if the tragedy of his words struck the boy. He looked pained and panicked and in a moment of prophetic improvisation said: But you can stay at my house! As we listen to the gospel on Christmas day, I often wonder how many times the tragedy of it all comes home to us. God knocked at the door and there was no room. I wonder if we understand that the Christmas story is more about the way things should be than the way there were or are. How many of the world s problems go back to closed doors, closed hearts, and closed lives? How different the world would be if each of us in our own way was able to say But you can stay at my house to someone lost, lonely, friendless, troubled. Those who knock on the door are everywhere. There are lonely people in our families. There are challenged and challenging people in our communities and workplaces. There are the many who knock on our nation s door for help. You and I are the innkeepers. The gospel asks us to recognize the humanity, the godliness of all who knock at any door for our help. It is always God who knocks on our door. That is the mystery and miracle of Christmas the Incarnation. Pope Francis has asked us to make this year a holy year of mercy. Here at our church we are one just four parishes on Long Island chosen to symbolically be a Holy Door of Mercy. There is no more appropriate symbol for a church than an open door. It reminds us that the heart of God is always open and we are always welcome to receive God s merciful kindness. And it is also a reminder that we ourselves are meant to be open doors of mercy to all those who we meet each day. I am so glad that you are here today. You are a vital part of the Parish Family of Sacred Hearts. It is in you that Christ is born today. I wish you and all those you love a blessed and joyful Christmas. Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

9 Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe On December 12th our parish celebrated a beautiful mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

10 Ways to Give to the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts We hope that you enjoyed your Christmas visit to Sacred Hearts. We are a small year round community and this maintenance of this beautiful church and its many ministries are made possible by the year round support and special holiday generosity of each of you. We are grateful for your generosity today. If you would like to learn about other opportunities to support us please consider the following: Become a Registered Member or Friend of the Basilica. You are welcome to make Sacred Hearts your home parish and if you already belong to another community we would be happy to include you in our membership as a Friend of the Basilica. Visit: Support the In Nomine Domini Fund: Our In Nomine Domini fund was established to preserve, restore, and develop the beauty of our basilica church. Last year parishioners contributed over 1 million to the fund which will be used to update the heating, add air conditioning, renovate the pews, and build rest room facilities. If you would like to join this effort please make your check payable to SHJM In Nomine Domini. These funds are only used for the basilica church. Become a First Fruits Contributor: One of the challenges faced by Sacred Hearts is the constantly changing pattern of giving over the course of the year. Summers, with many visitors are strong. Winters can be difficult. Storms, vacations, and active lives take people away for weeks or months. First Fruits is our new program of automatic giving which insures that even if the weather is poor or people are away our church receives a constant and planned level of support. If you would like to become a first fruits parishioner please visit our website. Stewardship Abigail Hubble, Rose Kelly, and Caitlin Hubble were stars in the Guild Hall Production of The Nutcracker

Mike pastor@shjmbasilica.org
