Pastor s Letter March 15/16 Transfiguration Dear Parish Family, Chances are you own something that is priceless. I don t mean expensive. I mean something that is so important to you that it could not be replaced. I am thinking here of things like wedding rings or the chalice that my parents gave me on the day of my ordination. I have used that chalice at every Mass I have celebrated for the past 35 years. If I lost it or if it were destroyed, I could buy an absolutely identical one from the company that made it but it would not be the same. Love, and the spirit in which something is given, can change everything. Some years ago I celebrated the baptism of Elizabeth, a baby girl born to my brother s best friend and his wife. My brother Bobby had been best man at their wedding and after Bobby died we all kept in touch. It was an honor to baptize their child and as a gift they gave me a small gold Cross pen. Cross pens were pretty common gifts in those days and the note with the pen acknowledged that fact and said: You probably have a plenty of pens like this but you don t have one from Elizabeth. I still have that pen. Love makes us look beyond the superficial, to the meaning behind the object or action. If I lost my chalice I would still be a priest, I would still have my parents love, and I would still celebrate the Eucharist. If you lost a wedding ring you would still be married and your love would be just as real. When Jesus takes the disciples up the mountain of the Transfiguration he is not changing things; he is changing them. Every day we have choices to make about how we respond to life. How we make those choices can change and transfigure life and the people around us. If I respond to a difficult situation with patience and kindness, I change not only myself but the life of people around me, and maybe even the life of the person or people making it all so difficult. If I respond to hurt with forgiveness, I lessen the total amount of hurt in the world. If I respond to the suffering of another with hope and compassion, I lift the burden of fear and anxiety. The story of the Transfiguration recounts how Jesus changed the disciples experience of their journey to Jerusalem. They originally hoped Jerusalem would be the place where Jesus would be made king and they would be at his left and right. Now they understood it was to be the place of his suffering and death. It was enough to make them flee in fear. But on that mountain Jesus changed it all for them. By his own way of facing the journey, he changed their fear to courage and to faith. In everyday living, we often face times of anger, disappointment, and hurt. But we also have the opportunity to turn all that around. Being human, it does not always work out so well. But sometimes it does. Sometimes our words and our being change it all. Such moments are priceless. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Mike Vetrano, Pastor

Our Parish Mission 2014 Evenings of Prayer, Music, and Reflection with Dan Schutte This year we welcome Dan Schutte, a well known Catholic musician and composer. Dan is the author of many songs we sing at mass each week including Here I am Lord and Table of Plenty. On these evenings Dan will weave together his music and the spiritual reflections behind them. Lent is the time of the Church s annual retreat - a time to examine our life of faith, a time to focus on our relationship with God and steps to nourish it. The parish mission is an opportunity to give God some time. Monday, March 24, at 7:30 PM A Deep Down Hunger God created us with a profound hunger deep in our souls, an emptiness that is forever looking to be filled. While we surely have moments of profound happiness, it s never enough. We re never completely satisfied with this life because we were made for something more. Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30 PM God s Invitation We are not left to make our journey alone. We make it with other men and women of faith. And we make it with God at our side encouraging us, giving us strength and hope. Where is God inviting me? Am I ready to follow? Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 PM God in Whom We Trust God never forces himself on us but is there when we open the door and invite him into our hearts. Opening the door takes trust and sometimes we re just too afraid. Who is the God that waits for us? Who is his name? How do we come to know him?

A Note from Religious Education Director Jennifer Ferrantino The feel of spring is in the air! Lent continues and it is not too late to try something new, growing something inside like grass or something that can be transplanted in your garden can be a sign of the new life to come at Easter. The outward signs of newness and growth can help remind us of the Lenten journey, we are called to something new. This year the Confirmation candidates will help lead the Stations of the Cross on some Friday evenings. Confirmation students if you need parish ministry hours for Confirmation please contact me about this great opportunity. Confirmation students will be having a retreat day here at the parish Saturday, April 5, Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Bishop Perez will be here to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at 4:30 PM. Please contact me with any questions or jferrantino@shjmbasilica.org Religious Education Sacred Heart Youth Ministry Stay tuned for coming youth ministry events And a special Youth ministry Lenten night For more information youth@shjmbasilica.org

Stations of the Cross We remember the road to Jesus death and link his journey to our own as our parish deacons lead us through this beautiful devotion. Come and pray with us Each Friday during Lent at 7 PM Living Stations of the Cross Good Friday, April 18, at 7:30 PM in the Church This is a wonderful opportunity for your Lenten and Holy Week journey! Our parish community comes together-led by our young people, our Music Ministries and members of our parish community-who share their own personal experiences on this most holy and solemn night. The celebration includes the Veneration of the Cross. Planning for Lent Fasting and Abstinence in Lent Lenten Fast and Abstinence All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday to limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals (which do not together equal a full meal) on each of those days. Water may be taken at any time. Penance The obligation to do penance and to observe the penitential seasons is a serious one. Those whose health or work would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence, and individuals consciences should guide them in this matter. However, no one should hold himself lightly excused, and another penitential practice should be substituted by those who cannot fast or abstain. A more serious reason is considered necessary to opt out of the observances on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday than for the other Fridays of Lent. Easter Duty All of the faithful who have received First Holy Communion are obliged to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, normally during the Easter Season a period which in the United States extends from the first Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday. Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi March 16, 2014 This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: Releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Isaiah 58:6-7

2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Our Lord is grateful to those who sacrifice in His name to build the Kingdom of God. Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone s life. Thank you! No gift is too small when it is offered with love to serve others. A Place to Call Home Marion lived with her mom through her early adult life. Her family was anxious about who would care for Marion, who is developmentally disabled, when mom passed away. They believed it would be best if she lived with one of them when the time came. But mom wanted a fuller life for Marion and she worried that her daughter wasn t living the life that God had planned for her; she knew she was capable of great things. Her mother turned to Catholic Charities home for people with developmental disabilities then, wonderful things did happen to Marion. I saw my sister changing, explains Richard, Marion s brother. She started working and became really independent. She gained a sense of responsibility and there was camaraderie in her new home. She not only had people that she could depend on, but more importantly, she had friends that depended on her. Catholic Charities has been operating residences for the developmentally disabled for over 35 years, providing people like Marion with a sense of belonging and a place to call home. Your support helps Marion live a full and happy life. 13 I Domingo de Cuaresma, Año A. Ilustración 2001 M. Moran. No temas. Quieres seguirlo? Texto: Philip J. Sandstrom, STD 2001, OCP. Derechos reservados.
