4 Pastor s Letter July 18/19 Summer Support Dear Parish Family, Thank you so much for your most generous response to our mid-summer appeal. As of Thursday this week we have already received more than $13,000 in donations. I am so grateful to each of you for your support. When I first came to Sacred Hearts I asked parishioners to tell me about their hopes. Many responded that they would like to see parish life and ministry come alive. I am doing my best to make this happen and I very much appreciate all the different ways people support these efforts. I also know that appeals, fundraising, and the like can be stressful for people. While some may be able to respond, others are tapped out and have little reserves to share. Part of what is so wonderful about our parish is that we are so diverse and I want you to know that I understand this. When I meet people and tell them that my community is in Southampton, they often ask what it is like. Here is what I tell them. The largest body of our parishioners are people who have lived here all their lives. While some have been very successful, most are working class people who now find it difficult to keep their heads above water with the taxes, home prices, and cost of living that are part and parcel of East End life. We also have many parishioners who spent much of their lives in other parts of Long Island, spent summers here, and now make the East End their permanent home. We also have a good number of people who are dual citizens and have a second home in warmer places. A growing part of our parish is our Spanish community. Our Apostolado Hispano, the Spanish apostolate, is a network of Vincentian priests who serve our community and eight other parishes on the north and south forks. In the winter months our Spanish Mass accounts for almost 40% of people attending Mass each weekend and for 20% of our weekly support. And then we have our summer communities! We have people who own summer homes here and have made Southampton a place to come for many years. For many of these families, Sacred Hearts is an important part of their summer time of rest and recreation. We also have many people who are not owners but regular renters in our community and a good number of these families have summered here for many years. These, too, think of Sacred Hearts as their summer spiritual home, a place for summer worship and for important events like weddings and baptisms. And then of course there are those who visit just for a little while. Maybe just for a weekend or week or two. Maybe just to catch up with friends and family who come here in the summer. I enjoy meeting people after Mass each week and seeing how many different places they come from. I meet people from all over the northeast, from European countries, even from Australia! What always amazes and delights me is the great affection they have for Sacred Hearts.

5 It is a wonderful privilege to pastor such a diverse community. What I want you to know is that I truly appreciate our differences, even our economic differences. When I ask you for support, I know that everyone is so different in their resources, their challenges, and their abilities. What is always important, however, is this: Whether you are here a day or a lifetime, this is your church, and you are always welcome here. Whether you are blessed and can share a lot, or struggle and can only share a little, it is the spirit of love behind the gift which counts the most. It is the mission of our church to open wide the doors of Christ to all who come here. I appreciate all you do to make that happen. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor Australian Children's Choir On July 9 it was our privilege to welcome this wonderful choir from Melbourne! Thanks to all who came out to share a wonderful afternoon of music. 10 Catholic Ministries Appeal and Stewardship Stewardship Happenings and Needs One of the great ways that people support our parish is by donating skilled work. Just this past week J Andreassi and Tony Tuscano arranged to reset and point the front steps of our church. Many of you noticed that a couple of steps had become loose. Their team did the work. Nick Feldmann of Eldor and Bob Sullivan of Sullivan Electric have done a super job of installing new lighting, running cables, and fixing some electrical problems. Earlier this month Ed Corrigan helped us with some landscaping needs around our rectory. And I hope you noticed the beautiful planters at the entrance of the church provided by Maryann Hanlon. Thanks to all! These are just a few of the practical needs of our church provided by local families and businesses. Here are some things we need now: Concrete Work: There is a badly damaged apron in front of the rectory garage (12 x 50 ). It needs to be removed, regraded, and new concrete poured. If you are able to help us with this project please contact Fr. Mike at the rectory. Youth Ministry changed my life. I would not be the same person without Youth Ministry; it molded me. I tell everyone the way to be the best you can be is to give yourself fully to your Faith and soak up everything you can from your Parish Youth Ministry experience, shared Joseph. More than 6,000 young people participate in Youth Ministry Programs in our Diocese. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that help our children grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000 of our young people in public schools as well as Campus and young adult ministry programs. Your support helps to inspire our young people to live and love their faith. Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make a gift to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift makes a difference in the lives of our young people.
