The 8 th World Meeting of Families was held in Philadelphia in September 2015. There was also a Synod on Family in 2014-2015 followed by Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of Love.

3 Cast into the Deep Excerpts from the Message of Pope Francis on Family We are a month into our 3-year journey to our Centennial. And as you know, the first year s theme is the Family. We have a rich tradition of catechesis and reflections on the family in our Church history. The most recent of these is the series of catechesis from Pope Francis during his weekly audiences in The 8 th World Meeting of Families was held in Philadelphia in September There was also a Synod on Family in followed by Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of Love. On the occasion of the 49 th World Communications Day in 2015, Pope Francis sent a message in which he reflected on communicating the family as a privileged place of encounter with the gift of love. Following are excerpts from his message. More than anywhere else, the family is where we daily experience our own limits and those of others, the problems great and small entailed in living peacefully with others. A perfect family does not exist. We should not be fearful of imperfections, weakness or even conflict, but rather learn how to deal with them constructively. The family, where we keep loving one another despite our limits and sins, thus becomes a school of forgiveness. Forgiveness is itself a process of communication. When contrition is expressed and accepted, it becomes possible to restore and rebuild the communication which broke down. A child who has learned in the family to listen to others, to speak respectfully and to express his or her view without negating that of others, will be a force for dialogue and reconciliation in society. In a world where people often curse, use foul language, speak badly of others, sow discord and poison our human environment by gossip, the family can teach us to understand communication as a blessing. In situations apparently dominated by hatred and violence, where families are separated by stone walls or the no less impenetrable walls of prejudice and resentment, where there seem to be good reasons for saying enough is enough, it is only by blessing rather than cursing, by visiting rather than repelling, and by accepting rather than fighting, that we can break the spiral of evil, show that goodness is always possible, and educate our children to fellowship. Pope Francis concludes by underscoring the family as a resource for society: "Families at their best actively communicate by their witness the beauty and richness of the relationships between man and woman, and between parents and children." "With patience and trust, we are working to build a better future for the world in which we live." 4 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Proverbs 31:10-13,19-20,30-31 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30 We are nearing the end of the Liturgical Year of the Church. Today is the 33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time and Ordinary Time ends with the thirty-fourth Sunday which is also the Feast of Christ the King. This is then followed by the First Sunday of Advent. How time flies! The last Sundays of Ordinary Time are ripe with readings about the time when Jesus will come in glory as our King. Yet, they lead us also to look at ourselves in the light of how we are doing with what God has given us in this life. Recall the story of Jesus in the Gospel reading today. A wealthy man had three people working for him. Before leaving for a journey, he gave each man a sum of money. The first got five, another, two; the third, one. They are called talents. A talent is a large sum. The three were to use the money to make a profit for the owner during his absence. The rich man is Christ, who, before leaving the world to enter into the glory of the Father, had entrusted all his possessions to his disciples. The time given for putting the talents to good use and thus yield fruits is the period that goes from the time Jesus rose from the dead until his return at the end of time. This is our time; it is the time of the Church. We are the servants; all of us who belong to the Church are the servants entrusted with talents. What, then, are the talents that Jesus gave us? First of these is his message of salvation, then Baptism, the Eucharist and all the other sacraments, the power to heal, to console, love for the poor, the suffering and all the ministries that we exercise in the Christian communities. Every one of us must take responsibility for some part of this wealth and must strive to make it yield fruit. Each one in proportion to his ability must undertake a ministry within the community, a service to our brothers and sisters. No single treasure of Christ should be allowed to remain unused. But there is still more that Jesus said to the lazy servant who did not do anything with the talent given to him. Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? Continued Continued What is this bank that Jesus is talking about? It is the Christian community. If somebody does not feel like doing his service as asked of him or her (either because he does not feel prepared for it, or because he has no time, or because he is having a difficulty in life), he or she should not go on holding on to the job or to the ministry but must hand over his ministry to the bank, that is, the Christian community, so that his or her share of service may be given to someone else who can do it well. Life should be taken very seriously and we should not lose any time. For as St. Paul tells us in the second Reading from his letter to the Thessalonians: you are children of the light and children of the day. So stay sober and alert for the Lord comes like a thief in the night. Language is a predator s tool for grooming online. One tactic that online predators use to groom a potential victim is by complimenting and reinforcing their self-image as a way of normalizing their interactions. Compliments are used to build trust, desensitize, and mentally or emotionally isolate the potential victim from others. It is important to remember that monitoring the online communication of young people on chats, apps, gaming websites, etc. is key in preventing abuse.
