For What It s Worth: You might have heard the old story about the elephant and the blind men. Some blind men were walking along this deserted road when they happened to run into an elephant (Hey, it happens!). One of the blind men touched the elephant s ear and thought it was a giant leaf of some kind. Another blind man touched the elephant s trunk and thought it was a giant snake. Still, another blind man touched the elephant s leg and thought it was a tree. And the last blind man touched the elephant s tail and thought it was a rope. Later, as they continued walking, they started arguing about what they had touched. Each blind man had a different reality. I guess you could say it depends on where one touches an elephant. McCabe Church is the same. For some people, McCabe is a place where they come to get recharged after a long and hard week. For others, McCabe is a place where one can hear beautiful music. For others, McCabe is a place for education. For others, McCabe is a place for children and youth. For others, McCabe is like a home where one gets baptized, confirmed, married and buried. It depends! It depends on where you touch McCabe. It depends on our age. It depends on our enthusiasm. It depends on your experience. It depends on your history. It depends on our relationship with God in Jesus Christ. It depends on attitude. Etc., Etc., Etc., Take a minute, right now. Think about McCabe? How do you see this church? What is our purpose? Why do we exist? Why are we here? I suspect we have as many answers to those questions as places an elephant can be touched. It depends. This is what I believe: And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20 (NRSV) You see it doesn t matter where we touch the elephant or the church. It s OK to have different perspectives as long as we can all agree that our main focus is Making Disciples for Jesus Christ. It s the last thing Jesus challenged us to do. In the coming months, you will be hearing a lot about serving opportunities, servant catalogs, places to serve. It will be an exciting time for us. We need everyone on board as we continue to make our way into the future. Yes, we are different and this is a good thing. Yet, we have one common goal that unites us: Making Disciples for Jesus Christ. Together with you in Christ, Pastor Rick

2 Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends, Flu shot anyone? Tis the season once again! I will be offering flu shots to those 18 and older in the parish nurse office beginning Sunday, October 20 th between services and after the Contemporary service. I will continue to provide the flu shots during my office hours on Mondays from 11:00-1:00 until my vaccine is gone. Sanford is again providing the flu vaccine for our use and will also be completing the billing process for the vaccine. All you will need to get the shot is your bravery and your insurance/medicare card so Sanford can submit it to your insurance company. Of course, the most important thing we can do to avoid catching that nasty flu bug is handwashing! As you already know, keeping our hands away from our face is so important as well. The flu bug can enter our system through our nose and mouth but even more so through the eyes. So, wash those hands and keep them below the neck!! In Our Thoughts & Prayers: Clifford & Gerry Enockson and family on the death Clifford s brother, Gene O. Enockson, of Mesa, AZ, on August 19, Pastor Art & Lorraine Scanson, Lane Scanson & family and Mark Scanson & family on the death of Art s mother and Lane s and Mark s grandmother, Esther Scanson, of Grace City, ND, on August 25, Florence Langen and Connie & Roger Johnson & family on the death of Florence s sister and Connie s aunt, Violet Kerber, of Hopkins, MI, on August 30, Marilyn & Bill Strutz and family on the death of Marilyn s mother, Nedra Seagly, of Bismarck, on September 9, Elizabeth and Isaiah Schuette and Don & Linda Schuette and family on the death of Elizabeth s husband, Isaiah s father, and Don s & Linda s son, Justin Schuette, of Bismarck, on September 15, The question usually arises during the flu season about shaking hands in church. This is totally understandable and a personal matter. If you feel uncomfortable about shaking hands just offer your best smile or do an elbow bump. Be creative! Have fun with it! If you have any questions about the flu shot please, contact me through the church office at Enjoy the beautiful fall season. Since we had such a rough start to our summer, I am thinking we will be enjoying summer-like weather until Christmas! Ok, it s a dream but I m sticking with it! God bless, Nurse Jane We re Tooting Our Horn! For Loren H. Japel on being named a member of the 2013 President s Council of New York Life. Members of the President s Council are among the top eight percent of New York Life s elite sales force of licensed agents. (If you would like us to toot the horn for someone s special accomplishments, please provide the details in writing. Then leave the written information with one of the secretaries in the church office. Thanks!)

5 Thoughts from Justin Balzer October bring us Halloween, a day that we, as kids, look forward to almost as much as Christmas or our birthdays. It is a day that we can be whatever we want to be, rewarded for it in the form of free candy. In the everyday world, we are told by others what we should be, it was on Halloween that we truly could be what we wanted to be. I want to challenge each and every one of you to remember what it was like on Halloween, choose who you want to be, but know that God calls each of us to be someone special. There is a certain freedom that comes from being who you want to be, but there is also a need to remember that God needs us to be who He created us to be. Sometimes being who God wants us to be can be frightening to say the least. In the book of Jonah, God called on Jonah to go and preach in the town of Ninevah and tell the people that they must repent or be destroyed. Jonah was happy where his life was and was afraid of what would happen to him in Ninevah, but God would not let Jonah escape who he was supposed to be. Eventually Jonah realized that he cannot run from God s plan for his life. Sometimes what we want to be and what God calls us to be don t always match up, and it is important to remember that God knows how we are to live up to our full potential. We must have trust in God and in ourselves to truly be whom we want to be. In good news for the youth group, we have been having great attendance at both Senior High and F.L.Y. youth groups, as well as Sunday School. It is great to see so many of the same faces, but also having a great number of new kids that are getting to experience youth group here at McCabe. Coming up: CROP Walk, Sunday, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. If you wish to sign up, just let me know. Also, October 27 is the potato bar and Halloween Family Fun Night. I will have sign-up sheets for all the youth to bring items for the potato bar and times to work at the potato bar. Afterwards we will be setting up for the Family Fun Night, where we will have games and food starting at 4:30-7:30 p.m. At Family Fun Night, there will also be a costume contest open to all ages. If you think you have an awesome costume, enter and try to win the 1st prize! Numbers 6:24-26 God Bless, Justin Balzer, Youth Director Thank you to all who helped make a splash for McCabe in the Autumnfest Parade! Thank you to Marvin Fried for the use of his truck, trailer, and generator! Thank you for all the thoughts, prayers, cards, and gifts given in memory of our mother, Esther Scanson.
