I'll get to the birthday gifts thing at the end (see the *P.S.). First I want to share a few words you can find nearly verbatim on the new Pastor page... In my office here at McCabe, I have a framed photo of my younger sister and me posing near the North Dakota Capitol sign on E. Boulevard. The photo was taken by our mother when we were on a family vacation in the late 1980's. (Our parents raised us in Sioux Falls, SD, but my mom grew-up in Bismarck. On this particular trip, she was taking us on a little tour of her childhood.) The day this photo was taken was, literally, picture-perfect: the Capitol is prominent against the blue, summer sky and there is a row of fluffy, white clouds decorating the area above the west side of the building. As I look at this photo today, I am aware that McCabe would have been right in my view as I smiled at the camera...and the 10-year-old me in the photo couldn't have had any clue that, 25 years later, she'd be heading to Bismarck to live and to work as the Senior Pastor of that big church across the street. Isn't that just how God works in our lives and world? Through the twists and turns of life, God surprises us, blesses us, guides us, angers us, challenges us, transforms us...and, most importantly, God is with us through it all. The best of all is, God is with us. - John Wesley As I get my bearings in this community, I've begun asking myself these questions: What is God already up to here at McCabe? What is God already up to here in Bismarck? And what is God calling us to from here on out? Of course, these are not questions just for me. They are questions for all of us young, old, new to McCabe, not-so-new, not even (yet) part of McCabe. These are, indeed, questions for all of us. So...how about we work on answering them together? Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck *P.S. - My birthday is August 9 th and I decided to spend part of it participating in the Docs, Crocs, & Frocks fundraising triathlon for Welcome House, an interfaith resource center supporting homeless individuals and families in our area. I'll be swimming a mile on that morning and I would welcome your sponsorship as a little birthday present to me. If you are so inclined, you can make your sponsorship donation at: #nopressure

2 Handbells Be Thou My Vision - See the music. Precious Lord Take My Hand - Touch the handbells. Breath On Me Breath of God - Inhale the presence of our Lord. Thy Holy Wings, O Savior - An angel gets its wings each time a bell rings. These words from some of my favorite hymns describe the creation of a handbell ringer. McCabe UMC has been blessed with 46 beautiful handbells and 37 handchimes. These instruments of praise belong to all members and those who attend McCabe. All that is required is a desire to ring beautiful music, two willing hands, and a willing spirit. Beginning Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 3:45-4:45 p.m. rehearsals begin for youth (4th grade and older), and at 5:45-6:45 p.m. rehearsal begins for adults. I am looking for 9 to 11 persons for the adult choir and youth choir each, that are willing to commit one hour during the week of their time from September 2014 to May 2015 to rehearse music to ring during church services on a particular chosen Sunday. If you are interested in ringing, please call Marti Knutson at or ummaknutson@gmail.com or call the church office at Biblical Reasons to Serve in the Ministries of the Church by Garrett Nates There are many reasons why it s important to serve in the ministries of the church. Here are 4 Biblical reasons that give us an understanding of the importance of serving others: 1. Serving models the life of Jesus. In Mark 10:45, we read that Jesus came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as ransom. We discover true greatness when we serve because we are becoming like Christ when we serve others. 2. Serving is the natural response to the gospel. In Romans 12:1-2, Paul urges the Christians to present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. The basis for this appeal is the magnificent mercies of God. The depth of the gospel message propels us into a life of all out service to Him. When we rightly understand what we ve been saved from, we ll desire to give our lives to Him in service, not to earn His favor or to repay Him but as a natural, loving response to what He s already accomplished for us. 3. Serving utilizes the spiritual gifts God has given us. In I Peter 4:10-11, we learn that each of us has been given a spiritual gift that is to be used to serve others. Each of us is on a mission with God to build up the body of Christ so that all become mature in Christ. As we use our gifts in the ministries of the church, not only are we helping others grow spiritually but we also are growing into maturity. 4. Serving combats our natural self-centeredness. In Philippians 2:3-4, we learn that we are to look not only to our own interests but also to the interest of others, as a way of imitating what Christ has done for us. We are all naturally selfcentered but serving in the church is a grace by which we combat those sinful tendencies and consider others more important than ourselves. Precept Bible Class The Precept Bible Class will begin is inductive study Divided Heart/Divided Kingdom on 1 Kings, Thursday, September 11, 10:00 a.m. The main messages are: 1. Human governments are faulty even at their best, but especially when God is not included in the scheme of things. 2. God s rule continues despite the foibles of men. The will and purpose of God will indeed prevail. Donna Kennedy will teach the 10-week course in Room E-18. Please contact Marilyn Strutz at to order materials - approximately $20. All are welcome. Contact McCabe s Servant Coordinator, Jan Joersz, at or jjoersz@mccabumc.com to discover your part in the body of Christ and live more fully this gift of life that God has given us! 5 Wholly Healthy Wow, it seems that summer has just begun and now we are already looking at fall activities once again! Hopefully, our warm weather will stay around for the next several months since we had such a slow start to our summer. Faithfully Fit exercise classes will begin again on Monday, September 8 th. This is an exercise class geared for everyone. In fact, our motto is, Come as you are. Do as you can. The class involves low-impact aerobic exercise, walking, strengthening with Therabands,(elastic-type bands)balance work and most of all, lots of fun and laughs. Please consider joining us every Monday and Thursday morning from in the Great Hall. Forget the Spandex and dress comfortably and be sure to wear supportive shoes. It is always a good idea to have permission from your personal physician before beginning any exercise program. I look forward to seeing you on September 8 th! I have quite a collection of adaptive equipment in very good condition ready to be borrowed for your use. This equipment has been donated by our wonderful members of McCabe with the hope that it will be borrowed and used by someone else. If you find yourself in need of a walker, shower chair, cane or crutches please give me a call at the church office at Darrell Aleson and I make hospital visits nearly every day of the week. Please help us out by giving the church office a call if you are hospitalized and have not seen one of us. Sometimes, even when asked about a clergy visit, your name may not get on the hospital s list. You cannot imagine how badly we feel when we hear that one of you has been in the hospital and we were completely unaware. Also, if you are having surgery and would like prayer before your procedure, please contact us through the church office. Soon school will be starting once more and along with that comes school sporting activities. Now is the time to schedule your child s sports physicals as they must be completed by the first practice. They can be scheduled with your personal physician or at one of the walk-in clinics. Also, be sure your child is up to date with their immunizations. Below is a list of vaccines required for kindergartner s and 7 th graders provided by Bismarck City Nursing. This is also a good time to catch up on missed immunizations for your child. Kindergartners need documentation of: 5 DTaP, 4 IPV (Polio), 3 Hepatitis B, 2 MMR, and 2 Chickenpox 7th graders also need documentation of: 1 Tdap and 1 Meningococcal Parents: don t wait until the week before school starts to get an appointment for these vaccinations! All clinics, including Public Health are very busy fitting school immunizations in that week!! Do it now! Most colleges require 2 doses of 5 meningococcal vaccine for the incoming freshmen. That second dose is to be given after age 16, so don t wait! Enjoy the rest of the summer and please do not hesitate calling me with any questions or concerns. God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. The other night my wife asked me to take her out someplace expensive. So.I took her to a gas station Adult Dominos Join Dominos on the first & third Thursday of every month, beginning September 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the McCabe Great Hall.
