Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: Do you believe prayer makes a difference? That is the question Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey asked, repeatedly, over the course of a 5-hour workshop in which about a dozen McCabe folks recently participated. Along with many other North Dakota United Methodists, we were at Jamestown First United Methodist Church from about 2:30-7:30pm on Palm Sunday. All in attendance appreciated the workshop and I especially appreciated the way Rev. Nilson Kibbey phrased the question: not by asking, Do you believe prayer works or Do you believe in the power of prayer, but, rather, Do you believe prayer makes a difference? Very often it can seem like Christians speak of prayer as though it is a magic wand we wave at God...as though our praying of the prayer is what causes God to spring into action. But that's not prayer and I don't think we mean to speak of prayer this way. So many of us know the truth of prayer that is answered in a way that first brings pain: a loved one whose illness is not cured or a world wherein terrorism seems a never-ending plight. Our first prayer is for the cure and for an end to political violence; but loved ones die and Brussels gets attacked during Holy Week. ( Excuse me, Pastor Jenny, you say, It's the Easter season, you know. Could you please write about something a bit more joyful? Okay. I will. Please keep reading.) I don't have an answer to why some people are miraculously cured and others are not. I don't have an answer to why God hasn't miraculously opened the minds and hearts of violent extremists. But I do know that, in the midst of illness and death, and in the aftermath of terrorism, there are people who are kind and brave and generous. And I know these kind, brave, generous people are, very often, God's way of answering prayers. Well, my dear, sweet, brothers and sisters in Christ, sometimes we get to be those kind, brave, generous people through whom God answers prayer. The prayer workshop many of us went to in Jamestown on Palm Sunday was about prayer but not generally. Specifically, this workshop was about what's called breakthrough prayer. Breakthrough prayer is prayer that asks God's Holy Spirit to literally breakthrough hearts, minds, and walls (real and metaphorical). (Continued on page 2.)

In asking God to breakthrough in this way, we open ourselves to ministry possibilities we might never have imagined...and, in asking God to breakthrough in this way, we will most certainly find God answering prayers we have not yet found ourselves praying. So: Do you believe prayer makes a difference? If your answer is yes, you're going to love what's coming to McCabe in the next months. If your answer is no, I hope you'll join us on the journey anyway. Perhaps you'll even find that God is working to change your answer. Coming Soon to McCabe: BREAKTHROUGH PRAYER! As we begin what's called the Missional Church Consultation Initiative (more on that in other and upcoming publications), our first step is a Breakthrough Prayer initiative. This initiative will include inviting the people of McCabe to commit to praying every day, at a specific time, for God to breakthrough...it will include prayer walks...and it will include God answering prayers we didn't even know we were praying. Noah Transgrud, grandson of Jerry & Linda Suko and one of the young men who made the cross and flame that sits atop the pedestal on the east side of the church. Noah has now committed to being part of the Youth for Christ mission trip to the Dominican Republic. He will be working with a group called Dups of Cold Water. They work with the children who live in the dump in that area. The children are brought to the volunteers where they get to know the children by playing games with the, teaching them sons, feeding them and doing some crafts and sharing their faith. They will also be doing some painting and building in the area where this will be happening. These 10 young people are years old and are doing something many of us wish we could...reaching out in Christian love with complete faith that they will be fine. The cost is $1,600 and the young people are responsible for raising that money themselves. So as Noah s grandparents we are asking for your support and your prayers as they embark on this life changing experience. 3 There s A Camp for That Looking for some adventure this summer? Check out Dakotas United Methodist Camps! Like basketball? There s a camp for that. Like Minecraft? There s a camp for that. Like water activities? There s a camp for that. Just looking for relaxation and spiritual renewal? Yep, there s a camp for that, too. There is something for the whole family to enjoy in the company of other United Methodists sharing their love for God. McCabe will pay one-half of the camp fee up to $100 per camp. When registering, use code CA to receive the registration credit. Additionally, an early-bird discount is given to campers who register and pay by April 30. 4 What s Happening? J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) In April, we will complete our Rescue 911: Salvation series with lessons on Saul s conversion on the Road to Damascus and Nicodemus. We will also begin learning about the Holy Spirit in a new series called Balloon Fest. Our key verse is from Romans 8:10, The Spirit gives you life. We finished up our series How to Ruin Your Life: Learning to Avoid Foolish Mistakes in March. In April and May we will be learning the books of the Bible utilizing fun activities, games, and crafts. This program is for kids ages 2nd-5th grade and meets the first and third Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Cave Quest Vacation Bible School June 12-15, 2016 At Cave Quest Vacation Bible School, kids explore the rock-solid foundation of God s love. Cave Quest VBS is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. Gear up and get ready to enjoy an over-the-top underground adventure! Heifer International Mission Fair RESULTS Thank you J.A.M. teachers, students, parents, and McCabe members for your hard work and support for the Heifer International Mission Fair last month. Students sold hand-crafted items like God s eyes, magnets, bookmarks, cupcakes, cookies, bird feeders, sun catchers, light switch plates and more to raise money for their animal goals. As a church, the market fair raised $2,204! Each class met or exceeded their goal and we were able to purchase 9 trios of rabbits, 9 flocks of chicks, 1 pig, 1 sheep, 1 llama, 1 heifer, 2 water buffalos, and 3 hives of bees. Great job! Thank you Kory Hagler, Tania and Tom Schroeder, and Tracy Huska for running the Heifer Bucks table. 4

5 Well ladies...are you ready for the coming months? One word, busy, busy, busy! I want to thank Mary-Ruth circle for the wonderful lunch they served on March 10th for the Unit meeting. It was so tasteful. Guest speaker, Sister Kathleen Atkinson from the Ministry on the Margins told us of her work with people who are trying to get their life back and starting over. UMW donated $100 to the Ministry. We also had an Executive meeting that morning of the 10th. A motion was made for the UMW to buy two new roasters for the upstairs kitchen. Motion was seconded and passed. We will ask Jan to purchase what she needs for roasters. The UMW Focus meeting will be held on April 16th in Washburn at the United Methodist Church. Registration is from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Meetings are from 10:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be served and it s always so nice to see old friends and make new ones. Preregistration is appreciated so please call me so we have a head count. There will be car pooling from McCabe, so please call me at ( ). Registration will be paid for UMW members by the Unit. July is Mission U in Jamestown. Anyone interested in going, please let me know. The Sakakawea district UMW Annual meeting Growing in Blessedness will be in Devils Lake First United Methdoist Church on September 16 & 17. Save the date! Our Reading Program reports are due in August. Keep record of what you read. You can get report forms in the church library. April 14 is the next Executive meeting at 10:30 a.m. April 21 the Circles will meet. Due to the Earth Day event being held at McCabe that day, Esther and Mary-Ruth Circles will meet in the choir room, M-1. If you know a friend who would be interested in a Circle, please invite them to one. We always like to see new faces and make new friends. May 9th is the Spring Banquet and from what I ve heard, it promises to be very fun with lots of surprises! I leave you with words from Brother Lawrence Know by the light that God is present, and be content with directing all your actions toward Him God Bless,, Gerry Ann Small 5 Open Door Celebrates 40 Years of Service Open Door Open Hearts is the theme for the celebration of 40 years of experience of the Open Door Community Center and all the good work accomplished in that time. November 2016 marks this hallmark for the Open Door. It is time to remember the beginnings in 1976 in a small house on the south side of Bismarck, its flooding in 1993, the new building, and especially all the children who began their first preschool experience with a Christianbased education. A 40th Anniversary Committee has been assembled to plan the celebration throughout this year and suggest priority needs that should be addressed. Open Door is a Dakotas UMC supported mission based in Bismarck. Local UMC churches (McCabe, Legacy, Calvary, and Mandan) assume most of the responsibilities of board membership, volunteer help for maintenance and program activities, and fundraising for special projects. Many Dakotas Conference congregations, church groups, and individuals generously support the Open Door. McCabe UMC owns the property and building for which the Open Door pays a monthly rent. Legacy UMC and Calvary UMC have made regular financial contributions during the years as has the McCabe congregation. Mandan UMC has had several fund raising events, most recently to purchase a new, much needed freezer for the Open Door. After many years and many hundreds of small energetic feet tromping through the doors and on the floor, one very basic need looms on the horizon as we approach the 40th year: replacement of the carpet and vinyl floor. The goal of the Board of Directors is to accomplish this prior to when the fall preschool program begins in September Therefore, we are seeking contributions toward this project so that we can begin as soon as possible. An Open House event will be held September 18, 2016, when we celebrate (on new carpet), the Open Door and Open Hearts with all our friends who believe in and support our mission. The staff and Board give thanks to all who have believed in the mission of Open Door Community Center and supported it with their time, talents, prayers, and financial gifts that help and educate the children and families in our community. 6 April One Thing - Charles Hall Youth Charles Hall Youth Services is a faith-based residential foster care agency providing a safe and fun home for teens and adolescents. We have boys in one home and girls in the other two...ages (average ages are 12-17) They can serve 9 boys and 18 girls at any given time.
