In one of her Mitford books, she quotes the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor. God does not care whether I am happy or not. What God cares about, with all the power of God s holy being, is the quality of my life and not just the continuation of my breath and the health of my cells. God cares about the scope of my life, the heft and zest of my life. Fear of death always turns into fear of life, into a stingy, cautious way of living that is not really living at all. To follow Jesus means going beyond the limits of our own comfort and safety. It means receiving our lives as gifts instead of guarding them as possessions. God has given us a certain number of years to live in this place we call earth. What we do with our time is our choice. We have the God-given freedom to choose to live our lives in ways that we decide and no one else! It is up to us! Unfortunately, too many of us give up our decision-making powers to things other than ourselves. We become tied down to schedules that are too full, to jobs that are too demanding, to lifestyles that are too expensive. We exist, but just barely. We live, but with fear and trembling. We grow, but without vision or faith. Life is a gift. It is a gift from God. This gift of life loses its potential if we hoard it for ourselves. Life is meant to be developed, used, shared and enjoyed. Albert Einstein once said, Only a life lived for others is a life worth while. Jesus has plans for us. We all have been given certain gifts and abilities. We are all uniquely and wonderfully created as we are reminded in Psalms. The message of Easter is to leave our old selves behind and put our new lives in the hands of the Master who taught others how to live. We have been given the gift of life and it s up to us to live that life as abundantly as we can. I remind you of the story of the caterpillar and how it must spin its cocoon before it can emerge into a beautiful butterfly. This is also our story. We are people emerging into the wonderful and beautiful creatures that God created us to be. This is Easter. May God bless us in our efforts to live up to our God-intended potential. Together with you, in Christ, Pastor Rick

4 UMW is: a mission organization with a special emphasis on the needs and concerns of women, children and youth, the most vulnerable of populations around the world. Funds are raised by our group to support this work. UMW is open to all women; our present membership at McCabe is 72. Spring Unit Meeting: Hosted by Mary Ruth Circle was held in the Great Hall on Thursday, March 8. We enjoyed an informative program by our librarian, Pat Martin. She reviewed books in our UMW reading program from our McCabe Library, the Bismarck Public Library and e- books. Pat reminded us that the McCabe Library is a resource available to everyone. Cyber Safety: The UMW served bars, cookies and coffee for this gathering on March 8. Fortunately, we also had time to listen to the program about safety on the internet, cell phone and other communication devices. The presentation contained important information for everyone. Pastor Ray will continue to keep the congregation informed. FOCUS on UMW Event: Please sign up to attend this event led by our Sakakawea District members on Saturday, April 14, in the Great Hall at McCabe. We will host the event with registration, morning coffee & lunch, and selling McCabe cookbooks. Registration fee for McCabe attendees is paid by our Unit. This is a regional meeting and invitations have been sent to Bismarck, Center, Linton, Mandan, McClusky, Turtle Lake, Washburn, Beulah, Bowman, Dickinson, Elgin and Hazen Methodist women. Upcoming UMW Events: May 14-Spring Banquet; June 13 - Salad Luncheon; July School of Christian Missions in Jamestown, and our Annual Bazaar on October 20. We can use your help! UMW Executive Committee: Members are Sharon Miller, Marlette Pittman, Carol Saville, Deanna Anderson, Rachel Bahrenburg, Edna Boardman, Al Ehrmantraut, Bonnie Elefson, Carol Guymer, Connie Kotchman and Pat Martin. Ask us about UMW or pick up a copy of our 2012 McCabe UMW directory with schedule, member registry and organizational information at the McCabe office. For McCabe UMW, Marlette Pittman Uniting Churches In Ministry: Apportionments The United Methodist Church believes we do ministry better when we do it together. This is why our denomination is designed as a connectional system. Our churches share a history, structure, and theological framework. We also participate in ministry inside and outside our local churches. The ministry of the Annual Conference (North and South Dakota) and General Church (global UMC) is supported through our apportionments. How The Money is Used (By Jeff Pospisil, Director of Finance, Dakotas Conference) General Apportionments (12%) - Everyone has to pay apportionments, even the Conference. The Conference is billed by the General Church (the denomination headquarters). These funds also support our bishops, seminaries, Africa University, UMCOR, missionaries, and many other ministries around the world. Stewardship of Resources - (10%) - Much of this money is used to maintain Conference property: our three camps, the Conference Center in Mitchell, and providing housing for District Superintendents and Directors. It provides for the work of the Finance Office. It also maintains our archives which are on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University in the McGovern Library. District Superintendents (9%) - This money goes towards the work of our four District Superintendents. They are responsible for supervising pastors and are the primary connection between the church and the Conference. Some of this money is used to help pastors move. If you ve been in a United Methodist church for very long, you know that our pastors are itinerant. This means that pastors are appointed by the Bishop and District Superintendents to a church. When the Bishop and District Superintendents decide to appoint a pastor to a different church, they are required to pack up and move. Equipping (7%) - This money is used in a number of ways to equip our churches for the challenges they face. We want to see our churches experience the joy of knowing they are doing what God has called them to do. We do this in several different ways. Providing access to training events and resources for pastors and church leaders, contracting with coaches or consultants, and holding local training workshops are the main ways we do this.

6 McCabe Youth We are excited about an upcoming opportunity to go to Arkansas. Cathy Larson, who is the director of the UM Open Door Community Center in Malvern, AR, has asked our youth group to come and help them with VBS and prepare the community for returning to school. The dates of the trip will be July 28 - August 3. After the first three days of work (Monday - Wednesday,) we will spend Thursday at Magic Springs and Crystal Falls Water and Theme Park in Hot Springs, AR. The final cost has not yet been decided. We do have an upcoming fundraiser on Easter morning when the youth will help serve the breakfast, the annual Easter Sunrise Service in the Great Hall will be at 6:30 a.m. on Easter morning and with breakfast downstairs afterwards. Please consider joining us for the Easter Sunrise Service. Any ideas for future fundraising events that will help the youth and their ventures would be appreciated.
