Happy Easter! When I was in Israel a few years ago, we met with a Christian leader who had a pretty difficult life growing up as a Christian in Israel and Palestine. Even as a man in his late 60 s, he still had to carefully navigate the challenges of running a school professing Christian values in an area that was not considered Christian. We gathered for our visit and this man greeted us by shouting, Why are you here? He is not here! It took us a moment for our minds and hearts to calm down. But our minds did clear and our hearts did stop racing, as the man started to gently and calmly visit with us. He clarified, He is not here. In Matthew 28:6, the angel said to the women, He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Later, during this same trip, we did see the place where Jesus was believed to be buried. And yes, the body of Jesus was not there. Our teacher explained, If you ve come to Israel looking for Jesus, He is risen! You won t find him sealed in a cave. He is not here! He is Risen! Then this gentleman invited us to travel around the country, to read the Scriptures and to experience God working through this experience. When our travels were over, he directed us to return home and share the message of the risen Christ. We are people of resurrection and new life! We are people who believe that the sting of death does not have the last word. We are people of hope and healing and revival! The journey to the cross can be hard and demanding, yet, as followers of Jesus, we celebrate that the cross is not the end of the story. As Christians, we actually see beyond the cross to the empty tomb. We celebrate God s work through Jesus Christ on the cross, then, as Easter people we are driven to want to help others experience the freedom and forgiveness and healing and hope and new life and peace that come in knowing Jesus. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, He is not here! We are Easter people. We are people of resurrection and new life. May we live each moment and each day letting this realization affect us now and into the future. Happy Easter! Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut Friends, this is who we are, isn t it? We re not people of death and a sealed tomb.
2 Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: Exploring Vocation this Easter Season Are you familiar with the word vocation? It's a churchy kind of word many of us know, but that many of us might misunderstand. At its most basic, vocation means calling. It comes from the Latin word vocare, which means to call. In religious life, we take vocation to mean a calling from God. A calling to do a certain thing, to be a certain kind of person, to work in a certain field, to volunteer in a certain way. Far too often in the church, calling and vocation get relegated solely to clergy. Pastor Mark and I speak openly about being called by God into pastoral ministry most pastors speak this way, and with good reason! Members of the clergy should feel that being a pastor is our vocation...that it is something God called us to do professionally. But God calls everyone! And vocation is never only about a person's profession. I know someone whose love of theatre was their vocation, even though it was not their paid career. I know many musicians who have not made a full-time profession out of making music, but who understand it to be their vocation. We have woodworkers, teachers, artists, cooks, bakers, crafters, sewers, etc., who do those things not as paid professions, but simply because they love doing them and feel called by God to put those skills to work in holy and beautiful ways. On April 7 & 8, we will begin a 4-week sermon and worship series on Vocation. Through this series, we'll explore the many ways God calls us in this life; we'll also hear from several McCabe folks about their particular vocations...whether or not those vocations happen to be their careers. God truly does call each of us and in many and varied ways. For this, I am so grateful! So, as we worship together in April, let's all be open to listening for God's voice, knowing that holy voice might call to us in new and powerful ways... Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr Celebrate Recovery We continue to meet on Saturday evenings with supper at 5:30 p.m., worship at 6:00 p.m., Newcomers 101, Men s Open Share and Women s Open Share Group at 7:00 p.m. and Fellowship at 8:00 p.m. Attendance has remained good with around 25 or more in attendance. Currently, there are Women s and Men s Step Study groups. At this point, they are closed to new members, but there will be step studies scheduled after these are completed. Again, thanks to those who have signed up to pray for Celebrate Recovery. We appreciate your willingness to offer your prayers for our growth and good work. We still have room for more volunteers on our sign-up sheets located at both Welcome Centers. Volunteers will be contacted regarding their prayers for Celebrate Recovery. Our band was formed when we first began our meetings and certainly deserves recognition. Their performances are excellent! Our members include Chris (drums), vocalists Brian, (guitar), Carly, (keyboard), Patrick, (guitar) and Tony (bass guitar). Thank you to all the ladies who attended our Unit meeting on March 8. It was so well attended and a special thank you to Mary- Ruth circle for the best luncheon. In March, we celebrated the founding of the Women s Foreign Missionary Society. They were later to be known as the UMW or United Methodist Women. We are almost 150 years old. Our theme this year is Sacred Spaces. Now something very important! An Earth Day celebration will be held at McCabe on April 19. Due to this event, our Circle meetings will have to be held on Thursday, April 12. I am sorry for any inconvenience but this change could not be helped. We also have changed the Executive meeting time on April 12 to 11:00 a.m. Upcoming events: April 12 - Circles 9:30 a.m. Esther 1:30 p.m. Mary-Ruth 6:30 p.m. Eve April 14 - Focus Meeting 9:30 a.m. Registration paid by our Unit and we will car pool to Washburn. 2 May 21 - Spring Banquet 6:00 p.m. Bring a friend! Held at McCabe. July Mission U, Jamestown More details later. Thank you for your patience with all of these changes. I leave you with these words There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self. -Ernest Hemingway Enjoy the spring and God bless you all, Gerry Ann Small, UMW Leader
3 Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends, In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. If it sounds too good to be true it is. I am sure you have heard or said these clichés before. I would like to heed a warning involving both of them. Recently, I attended an AARP (Yes, sadly I m old enough!) sponsored event regarding the latest scams. It is very troubling how devious and clever these criminals who are stealing our identities and life savings have become. Since January of this year,18 people in ND fell victim to scammers and have resulted in the loss of $306,000! Listed below are some of the helpful hints provided us. First of all, if you have caller-id on your phone and do not recognize the phone number, do not answer it. Once the call is picked up and you realize this is either a telemarketer or a scam con, HANG UP! Do Not talk to them. As difficult as it is not to become angry with these pesky callers, DO NOT yell at or threaten them. They don t care and they will retaliate with more annoying phone calls. Never call back an unknown number. Do NOT select an option to talk to a representative or select a number to get you off of their call list. This just validates your phone number and allows them, and many others, to call your number. Once involved in a scam, this person is put on a sucker list which increases scamming. Then another scammer will call to convince the person that they will assist them in recovering the money that you were scammed out of. Uff da!! Scammers will also use fear and intimidation to badger you into giving them money. It is not uncommon for these con artists to call a person times a day to get them to invest. They have been known to become very aggressive with their threats. Call the police to notify them of this type of caller. Scammers are not going to sound like a scammer! They will use every angle to convince you to believe what they are telling you is legitimate. Scammers will use fear and intimidation so be very vigilant of your banking accounts and personal identity. The presenters told of many of the scams still going around such as the Grandparent scam where a scammer poses as a grandchild that has gotten into trouble and is asking for money to get them out of whatever situation they scheme. These calls are generated from Canada so the caller sounds Midwestern and more believable. Do not ever wire money to anyone unless you have absolutely validated the identity of the caller. Romance scams have been popular among people in ND, mostly among the ages of They meet each other on-line, usually on Facebook, and create a trusting relationship. 3 Soon the scammer asks the victim to borrow them money. The Sweepstake scam originates out of Jamaica. The scammer tries to convince you that you have won a large cash prize, or a car, which is typically a Mercedes. All they ask of you is that you send them money to pay the taxes on the win in order to collect your amazing prize. (This is where the cliché, If it sounds too good to be true, it is, comes into play.) HANG UP!! A scammer will call stating that they are from your computer company and have detected a problem with your computer. Don t say a word. Just hang up. After this call, your computer may be infected with a virus and a flashing warning will display telling you to reply to a number to fix the problem. Do not reply! Shut your computer down immediately. Be vigilant with keeping your security updated on your computer. I recently learned on a morning news show of a new scam involving tax returns. The scammer will directly deposit a bogus amount of money into your checking account claiming it is from the IRS. (Yes, they are able to buy checking account numbers, social security numbers, etc. on the Dark Market.) Once this money is in a personal checking account, the scammer will call or you posing as an IRS employee with threats of unlawfully accepting money from the IRS and that they will file criminal charges and blacklist your social security (Continued on page 4.
4 number unless you send that money back to the IRS (the thief). The plot thickens in this one as the IRS is looking at this deposit as real and will only make one payment per tax season. This will delay your real tax return until the problem is resolved. Call your bank and the IRS immediately to rectify this problem. We are to remember that the IRS will NEVER call, , or text. They always mail any correspondence. The take home story here is to very vigilant of your banking accounts, personal identity (Finally, this April Medicare is changing the ID number on the card to a number other than the person s Social Security Number!) and to just hang up the phone when a scammer calls. You can update your phone number (landline or cell phone) on the Do Not Call list to prevent Telemarketers from calling. Call to register your phone at: (toll-free) or register online at: or However, this will not stop scammers. If you have become victim to a scam or are suspicious of a caller, notify the ND Consumer Protection Agency at: (701) or the office of the Attorney General at: You can also call The AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at These agencies are very willing to assist you. Arrests have been made and monies reconciled because people have reported suspicious activity. Whew, that s a lot of concerning information! How about some good news? Gods love is the real deal and when we call on Him He is always there to help us, no questions asked! Please, when He calls us...always answer! God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. Does anyone else think it is interesting that The IRS spells, Theirs?! Just hang up the phone when a scammer calls.
