(Jesus & Me) Children s Program Begins Sunday, September 13 Check out: for more information about McCabe and our Ministry Groups. A couple of years ago, a miracle-related image started making its way around the internet and I chuckle every time I see it. It's a photograph of the wine aisle at a store somewhere: bottles of wine are prominently featured in the photo, but the sign hanging directly above the wine is marked water. (Clearly an error or joke on some employee's part.) The punchline of the photograph, however, is in the photo's caption, which reads, Jesus Was Here. Whoever took and captioned this photo 1) is well-versed in the Gospel of John and 2) has a great sense of humor! Water into wine on aisle 7. It's a miracle! When Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana, it was the first public miracle he performed in the Gospel of John (John 2:1-12). John recorded this miracle in chapter two and it's one of my absolute favorite stories in the Bible. In reality, however, I don't like that story any better than all the other stories about the miracles Jesus performed. So, because they happen to be some of my personal favorites and because the idea of miracles connects very well with our year-long sermon- and worship-related focus on generosity we're going to spend most of August's worship services exploring some of the miracle stories in the Gospel of John. We kicked-off our year-long generosity focus with a sermon series on many of Jesus' parables. As we looked at those parables, we uncovered the fact that, at their core, they are stories about God's generosity (and about how we are to extend that generosity to others). Well, if parables are stories about God's generosity, miracles are stories of God's generosity: miracles are God's generosity in action! We'll be starting this miracles series on August 8 th /9 th and it will cary us through the month of August. In case you're curious, here are the scriptures and focus for each week: John 6 (miracle of feeding Jesus feeds the crowd with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish), John 5 (miracle of healing Jesus heals a man who was born blind), John 2 (miracle of abundant joy Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding feast), and John 1 (miracle of the Incarnation God's Word is made flesh in Jesus Christ). I hope you will join me in excitement over this series! And, of course, I hope to see you in worship this last, glorious month of summer... Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck *P.S. - Many of you may recall that, last year around this time, I swam a mile as part of a fundraising competition for The Welcome House (a local, faith-based non-profit organization that seeks to assist persons who are experiencing homelessness). Guess what? I'm doing it again! And, as I have yet to do any official training, it will be something of a miracle if I make it through my mile in decent time. If you would like to sponsor me in this year's Docs, Crocs, Scholars, and Frocks event, go to: (You'll find my picture and a sponsor now button.) Many thanks in advance!

5 Praise the Lord! We (UMW) have our treasurer, Kory Hagler, back with us and she s well. We held our UMW Executive meeting on June 10. It was voted to send Judith Roberts a donation. Judith was the guest speaker at our Spring Banquet. She is working with women with addictions. We also voted to give Jan Joersz and the youth each donations for their exceptional work at the Banquet. We can be so proud of our youth and the work that they do. Our Salad Luncheon on June 10 was so much fun! So many salads to taste. Thank you to everyone who made a salad to share and especially those who worked in the kitchen. As a group, our UMW are so efficient. 118 meals were served. A reminder to our readers. Your reading program reports need to be completed and turned to Faye Hasche or the church office by Saturday, August 15. The Sakakawea District Annual meeting of UMW will be held at Legacy United Methodist Church, September 18 & 19. This always proves to be a great spiritual retreat. Last year McCabe hosted the District meeting. I am so much wiser now! One of our very special members, Carol Guymer, was back in Bismarck for some unfinished business. We held a High Tea for her so that we could all visit and laugh with her again. We presented her with a needlepoint picture for the quilter. Carol is a very talented quilter. Thanks to all our cookie and bar bakers for helping out. Our next Executive meeting will be held August 13 at 10:30 at Al Ehermantraut s home (1217 Simle Dr.) Our summer potluck picnic will follow at 12:00 p.m. I now leave you with the words of my hero of the 1960 s Martin Luther King Faith is taking the first step, even when you don t see the whole staircase. 6 Wholly Healthy We might know it is hot outdoors when the farmers start feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs! Whew, it has been a bit warm and sticky lately! There is nothing better than an ice cold drink to cool us down when it is so hot. Yes, you guessed it. This is my segue into a new study released on sugary drinks. A study has been recently released on the alarming number of deaths worldwide that are directly related to the intake of sugary drinks. 184,000 deaths have occurred around the world per year, 25,000 of those in the US, due to health issues directly linked to sugary drinks. This study was published in the journal Circulation which is associated with the American Heart Association. Researchers at Tufts University in Boston conducted a global study on over 600,000 people from 1980 to 2010 which resulted in the staggering number of deaths reported due to diabetes, heart disease and cancer related to the use of sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, iced teas, fruit drinks (excluding the 100% fruit drinks), sports or energy drinks, and homemade sugary drinks. Projections for the next years, according to one of the lead physicians in the study, state that the problems with sugary drinks will only worsen. Research is indicating that disease will increase by at least two-fold over current estimates. Perhaps we really do need to rethink our drink! Faithfully Fit exercise classes will begin again on Monday, September 14 th. This is an exercise class geared for everyone. In fact, our motto is, Come as you are, Do as you can. The class involves low-impact aerobic exercise, walking, strengthening with Therabands, (elastic-type bands), balance work and most of all, lots of fun and laughs. Please consider joining us every Monday and Thursday morning from in the Great Hall. Forget the Spandex and dress comfortably and be sure to wear supportive shoes. It is always a good idea to have permission from your personal physician before beginning any exercise program. I look forward to seeing you on September 14 th! Now is the time to schedule sports physicals for school activities. They must be completed by the first day of practice. Also a reminder to catch up or receive needed immunizations. Enjoy the rest of the summer. My prediction is beautiful warm weather until Christmas since we had such a slow start this year! Yep, you can call me a dreamer! :) Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. Bulletin blooper: While Pastor is on vacation, massages can be given to the church secretary. August ONE THING School Kits & Health Kits for UMCOR These kits go wherever they are needed throughout the world...whether it s for a flood in Texas or an earthquake around the world somewhere. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) answers the call. We would love to have you fill a school bag (patterns are available to sew) or put together a health kit. However, if you prefer to help in another way, there is a list of what is needed for each kit and you may wish to donate some of those items. We would also welcome people who would be willing to sew school bags. Check with the church office for a pattern or perhaps you would like to donate toward the purchase of these bags. In the past we have included several other kits but these two are the ones being called for and so we have decided to concentrate on these two. A collection site will be setup in the Great Hall. If you have questions, please call the church office or Linda God bless you for your help. 1 ONE THING Precept Bible Study - 16 Chapters of Luke Do you desire to know God s Word with a deeper understanding? Consider join the 11 week inductive bible study, Who Is This Man Who Forgives Sin?, which covers the first 16 chapters of Luke. Classes begin Thursday, September 3, 10:00 a.m., taught by Donna Kennedy. Please contact Marilyn Strutz to order your materials (approx. $20). All are welcome! 6

7 Spiritual Gifts Following and in the next few Messengers you will find the descriptions of Spiritual Gifts that are listed in the Bible. What are your Spiritual Gifts and how are you using them? If you would like to discover you gifts and explore the possibilities for using them, contact Jan at or Administration (Guidance) - Greek: kybernesis = pilotage, to steer, a guide, directorship in the church The ability to organize and manage information, people, events, and resources to accomplish the objectives of a ministry. People with this gift handle details carefully and thoroughly. They are skilled in determining priorities, and in planning and directing the steps needed to achieve a goal. They feel frustrated when faced with disorder, and are uncomfortable with inefficiency. People with the gift of Administration often make it easier for others to use their own gifts, simply by keeping things organized and flowing smoothly. 1 Corinthians 12;28, Acts 6:1-7, Titus 1:5 Apostleship - Greek: apostolos = a delegate, a special ambassador of the gospel, officially a commissioner of Christ, a messenger, one who is sent The ability to build the foundation of new churches by preaching the word, teaching others to live by Christ s commandments through the example of their own lives, and preparing the people to serve one another. Persons with the gift of Apostleship are not only eager to bring the gospel to those who have never heard it; they prepare those people to continue the work after they have left. They enthusiastically approach new ministries, churches, or settings, and realize the need to adapt methods of evangelism and service to widely different environments. People with this gift might envision themselves as missionaries, but some may not they may instead accept and exercise leadership over a number of new churches or ministries. Ephesians 4:11-13, 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12, 2 Peter 3:2 Distinguishing of Spirits - Greek: diakrisis = judicial estimation, discerning pneuma = a current of air, figuratively a spirit, mental disposition The ability to recognize what is of God and what is not of God to distinguish between good and evil, truth and error, and pure motives and impure motives. People with this gift usually can rely on instincts or first impressions to tell when a person or message is deceptive or inconsistent with biblical truths. They can sense the presence of evil, and they question motives, intentions, doctrine, deeds, and beliefs. These people must take care to use their gift in a way that brings good to the body of Christ to judge with mercy and understanding rather than to condemn. It is unfortunate that people sometimes use this gift as a weapon against someone they disagree with, as opposed to seeking to understand whether their feeling is truly Spirit led. 1 John 4:1, Acts 17:10-12, Act 13:6-10 Encouragement - Greek: paraklesis = imploration, solace comfort, exhortation, entreaty The ability to encourage, help, intercede for, and be an advocate for others in a way that motivates others to grow in their faith and urges them to action. Encouragement (also referred to as Exhortation) takes many forms, and can be done through personal relationships, music, writings, intercessory prayer, and speaking, to name a few. People with this gift encourage others to remain faithful, even in the midst of struggles. They are sensitive and sympathetic toward another person s emotional state and exhort selflessly, with affection, not contempt. They can see positive traits or aspects that other persons overlook and often have more faith in other persons than they have in themselves. Acts 14:21-22a, Acts 15:30-31, 2 Timothy 4:1-2, Acts 20:1-2 Evangelism - Greek: euagelistes = a preacher of the gospel The ability to spread the good news of Jesus Christ so that unknowing persons respond with faith and discipleship. Contrary to what you might think, people with the gift of Evangelism do not all speak of their faith from a podium or by taking their message door-to-door through a neighborhood, though some do. Most people with this gift simply speak comfortably about their faith; nonbelievers are drawn into this circle of comfort. These people enjoy many friendships outside of their Christian community. They enjoy helping others see how Christianity can fulfill their needs. They eagerly study questions that challenge Christianity. They respond clearly in ways that connect with individuals meeting the individuals right where they are. Acts 8:26-35, Acts 16:6-10, Acts 5:42, Luke 9:6 7
