Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: Thank God for Saints, Veterans, & Seasons! Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided; great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Many of you may know those words as the refrain from the hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness. This hymn has long been one of my very favorites; in fact, I love it so much that my husband, Derrick, and I chose to have it as a congregational hymn during our wedding ceremony! In verse three, we sing of blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside : it was deeply meaningful to sing those words, side-by-side near the altar in McCabe's sanctuary, bedecked in our wedding day finery. My husband is one of the 10,000+ blessings God has given me and I am so thankful. This November, in the wake of our financial stewardship series, we will be spending time during worship giving God abundant thanks: for saints, for veterans, and for God's steadfast presence through the many seasons we experience in life. Then, after giving God thanks for the seasons of life, the season of Advent will begin...the season when, together, we pray and wait for Christmas. Each weekend in November will have the following themes: November 5 th & 6 th : Thank God for Saints (celebration of All Saints' Day) November 12 th & 13 th : Thank God for Veterans (with recognition of Veterans) November 19 th & 20 th : Thank God for Seasons Now, as excited as I am for this Thank God for... series, I am even more excited for our Advent series a series that came together as the result of a brainstorm party with a bunch of McCabe folks. The theme for our Advent series is All I Want for Christmas... I invite you to join in my excitement for these upcoming sermon and worship series! More importantly, however, I invite you to pray that God's Spirit will bless and inspire us through these series...that we might be ever more aware of the way God is breaking through in our midst, and that we might continue to grow in the way we are building God's heavenly kingdom in our part of this earth. Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr, Senior Pastor *P.S. - The image included was found at -november-2015-teaching-series/.

2 Relationships Jesus said the most important thing we can do is love God and love the people God puts in front of us (Matthew 22, Luke 10). At its core, loving God, and loving our neighbor, is about relationships. It s about our relationship with God, and our relationships with our neighbors (neighbors being broadly defined). Relationships happen one person at a time. The way we live our relationships can encourage, or discourage, others to explore or go deeper in faith. The Christian song They ll Know We are Christians by Our Love is so very true. Authentic Christians are known by the way they love God and by the way they love their neighbors. Authentic Christian relationships change lives, and change the world. In the upcoming days, as we prepare to celebrate the saints who have gone on before us, as we give thanks for so many blessings from God in our lives, and as we prepare for the holy season of Advent, let s be intentional about taking the time to consider our relationship with God, and our relationships with the people God has put around us. They ll know we are Christians by our love of God, and by our love of family, friends, and all of our neighbors. In service with you, Mark E., Discipleship Pastor McCabe Youth Corner Greetings! Over the month of October, in F.L.Y. (Faith Lives in You) we have been discussing the idea of temptation, and not just the easy temptations to avoid either. Even as adults, we are facing with daily temptations; the temptation to lie, the temptation to be cruel, the temptation to be lazy. It is how we act or not act on those temptations that truly shows how we live for God. 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. I want to thank all of those that helped with the potato bar on October 30. All the funds raised are being saved for our summer mission trip to Colorado. Keep your eyes open for other fundraisers (which will include Family Fun Night) in the coming months to help cover the cost of the mission trip for our youth. 5 Missional Church Consultation Initiative (MCCI) Update! Months ago, we began a Breakthrough Prayer movement at McCabe: we've been praying our 6:10 Breakthrough Prayer everyday since mid-may, we prayerwalked parts of our communities throughout the summer, many of us have prayer-walked our building and our grounds, we did a 40-day prayer challenge in August and early September using Mark Batterson's Draw the Circle devotional book. We've been praying for God's Spirit to breakthrough in new and powerful ways! All this praying is not only a wonderfully faithful thing for us to do...it's also a critically important part of the Missional Church Consultation Initiative, or, as it's most often referred, the MCCI. The MCCI is a new life cycle process McCabe was invited to participate in by the Dakotas Cabinet (our bishop and district superintendents. Many mainline Christian churches have been in decline for decades struggling to retain people in the midst of a cultural tide that has been shifting away from institutional religion. We see it in our own families and in ourselves: children who grew-up faithfully attending worship and Sunday School no longer connecting to a church once they hit adulthood...getting busier and busier on the weekends and in the evenings, making it more challenging to get to worship or to participate in small group ministries. Like so many churches, McCabe has been declining in worship numbers and in membership for decades; our most recent peak was in It can seem hopeless, but it's not! We believe in a God of resurrection, a God of hope in all things: the MCCI is about helping us make important shifts in the way we do ministry so we are better equipped to welcome new people and to help everyone deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ. Some key features of the MCCI process are: The Breakthrough Prayer movement meant to open our hearts to God's Spirit, inviting us to change attitudes and behaviors that prevent us from doing things in a new way. Monthly training days for Pastor Jenny (with follow-up homework!). A Congregational Self-Study designed to help us see who we've been, who we are, and where God is calling us. The MCCI weekend during which a team of folks will spend time in conversation with McCabe folks, learning where we are and what our needs for growth are. This team will then create a series of prescriptions for us, which will be presented during a worship service and all-church meeting on the Sunday of the MCCI weekend. The prescriptions are all or nothing! We say yes to all of them or no to all of them. (Our MCCI weekend will likely be sometime in the first few months of Discernment month with Town Hall meetings. In the month following the MCCI weekend, we are given time to pray seriously about whether or not we will vote to accept the prescriptions. During this month of prayer and reflection, we'll host town hall meetings during which folks can talk about the prescriptions, ask questions, dream, etc. Congregational vote on prescriptions. This happens approximately 1 month after the MCCI weekend. Prescription implementation. Assuming we vote yes, of course! This phase includes coaching for each prescription, specific to whichever area of ministry and mission relates to the particular prescription. As time goes by, you'll hear more and more about the MCCI. Please continue to pray for God's Holy Spirit to breakthrough into our hearts and minds...pray we will be ever more open to what's new and what's next! We re Tooting Our Horn For... Dr. Michael Patrick McGrath: Mick graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in August from Arizona School of Health Sciences, Mesa, AZ. Turn clocks back Saturday, November 5th! 5

6 Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends, Let us be grateful for the bountiful harvest, the orange pumpkins soon to be transformed into scrumptious pie, the leaves of orange, red and yellow dancing below our feet, the warm sunshine of day and the breathtaking night sky. God is good! Every year in November, National Donor Sabbath is observed. This year the observation and education about organ donation occurs November 11 th -13 th. The three days include the days of worship for major religions in the U.S. It is an opportunity to educate the public about the need for donation and the importance of registering one s decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. One may ask what the benefits are for being an organ donor. A single donor can save or heal the lives of more than 50 people. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 people began new lives in 2015 thanks to organ donation. 48,000 people have their sight restored through corneal transplants each year. Just the knowledge that someone else is given a chance to live a healthy productive life is the greatest gift of all. 120,000 men, women and children await lifesaving organ transplants. More than 1,000 of these are 10 years old or younger. Another person is added to the nation s organ transplant waiting list every 10 minutes. Sadly, 8,000 people die each year, 22 people each day, almost 1 every hour because the organs needed are not donated in time. There is no cost to the donor s family or estate for donation. People of all ages and medical histories should consider themselves potential donors. One s medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissues can be donated. An open casket funeral is possible for organ, eye and tissue donors. Through the entire donation process, the body is treated with care and respect. Funeral arrangements can continue as planned following donation. If you wish to become an organ donor, register your decision at the local Department of Motor Vehicles so it can be noted on your driver s license or ID. One can also register online at RegisterMe.org. It is vitally important to notify your family of your decision of being a donor so that they can support your decision. Please sereiously consider being an organ donor. This important decision will provide new life to another person. The greatest gift of all. If you have questions please contact me, your personal physician or go to for more information. (Facts and statistics from Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and Donate Life America as of August 10, 2016) As we soon will be celebrating Thanksgiving, let us take a step back and realize all we have to be grateful for in the constant and unconditional love of God, family, friends and the unexpected simple blessings experienced each day. Enjoy a blessed Thanksgiving. God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. Why is it that most of us don t realize how much we have to be thankful for until we have to pay taxes on it?! Thank You! Thank you for allowing us to use your space for our 24th Annual Take Back the Night Rally put on by the Abused Adult Resource Center. We are grateful for your support of our mission to serve families facing violence in their lives. With your help, we can continue to restore hope, build futures and change lives for families in our community. -Diane Zainhofsky, LSW, Executive Director Thanks to all who helped with the Rummage Sale on October 15. The help was outstanding from those who donated, to those who unpacked and arranged, those who marked and to those who worked the day of the sale and those who helped clean up afterwards...it was a fun time to spend together and I appreciate all of you. -Linda Suko 6

8 Ok, Ladies, let s take a deep breath and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. The Bazaar is over and we made approximately $4,880. I am so very proud of each one of you. I have to give an extra big and grateful thank you to Linda Suko. When she called to tell me she was moved to help me with the rummage sale, I thought WOW that was fast. I had prayed for special help with this very BIG job. Linda and her sister Beth Swanson did such a great job and were an answer to my prayer. McCabe is so blessed in it s inner strength...it s people. All one had to do is talk to the right person and things get done. We each have our strengths and are quite good at them. It took all of us to do the bazaar and do it well. Thank you all. Thanks to all who brought in their treasures; those who baked for a great baked goods booth; thanks to Tuesday Workshop for their great crafts; thanks for the delicious lunch; thanks to the men who always step up and help us; and thanks to all of you who spent the day with us. November is a time of Thanksgiving and I am so thankful for the day I attended my first service with my mother-inlaw Erna Small. Our next Executive meeting will be held Thursday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m. and the Circles will meet on Thursday, November 17 which will also be the World Thank Offering. Elections have been held and the present slate of officers will remain: President, Gerry Ann Small, Vice President; Sharon Miller, Secretary; Selma Kerzman, Treasurer, Kory Hagler; Special Event Coordinator, Al Ehrmantraut; Spiritual Growth, Marlette Pittman; Social Action, Irene Wentz; Education & Interpretation, Faye Hasche. I thank each of you for accepting your office. It was also decided at the last Executive meeting to award Marin Ehrmantraut $200 for her mission trip. God bless you and watch over you. Our jewel of a women this year is Wanda Klipfel. Special recognition pins also go to Barb Egan and Gloria Knoll. Congratulations ladies and we appreciate all you do for McCabe. 8 I would like to leave you with these words Time to think: it is the source of power. Time to play: it is the secret of perpetual youth. Time to read: it is the fountain of wisdom. Time to pray: it is the greatest power on earth. Time to laugh: it is the music of the soul. Time to give: it is too short a day to be selfish. God bless each of you and Happy Thanksgiving! 9 1 ONE THING November ONE Thing: November 1-14: Christmas Shoe Boxes This is the 12th year that McCabe has participated in collecting Christmas shoe boxes for the children of the Spirit Lake Reservation. There are about 4,000 children each year that the churches of North and South Dakota answer the need. The deadline is Monday, November 14. This is a simple project. Wrap a shoebox, top and bottom separately, and then fill them with whatever you think a child of the age ranging from infants to teens would like. Put a rubber band around the box and mark it with a gift tag indicating the age and gender and bring it to the church. Because of the difficulty in matching sizes only hats, mittens and scarves should be put into the boxes. If you have questions, please contact Linda at: November 15-30: Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry This is the season of Thanksgiving so it seems appropriate to collect food as well. Items needed the most are dry goods, such as cereal, instant potatoes and pasta. You can bring your items to the One Thing collection area located in the Great Hall.
