Sunday News! On worship weekends, in addition to our regular four services: Celebrate Recovery continues to reach and minister with their kids. Another Celebrate Recovery worship and fellowship time has started at Ministry on the Margins. PICCND: The Pacific Island Christian Church of North Dakota has kicked off a Sunday afternoon service. The Holy Spirit continues to stir and breakthrough! It is such a privilege to get to serve with you through McCabe! Wednesday evenings: Wednesday Meal We have had great support to help relaunch our Wednesday evening meals. At the same time, we continue to look for people feeling nudged to sponsor, order in or prepare and serve a meal on a Wednesday evening. We have a faithful, strong team of people who are ready and willing to support you in making this happen. Currently the meal is being prepared for around 75 people of all ages. MiniWorship: Around 75 people of all ages are worshipping in the new MiniWorship. Awana: We ve added Cubbies (3-4 year olds) and Trek (6 th graders) this year. Confirmation: Two confirmation groups have started. : A revamped youth group is emerging. Fear of the Other: Have an adult small group option (that s also offered on Sunday mornings). Choir, Bells and Bands: All of these groups are up and running. Financial Info: Thank you for your financial faithfulness this summer. We have had a solid summer. Apportionments: At the end of September, we will be current on our 2018 apportionments. It is our intent to stay current on our apportionments and pay them in full each month. Other Conference Obligations: We have paid off our 2017 Conference obligations and have a plan to meet our 2018 Conference obligations (ex: Thrive Commitment). Cash Reserves: We have been concerned about our cash reserves to date. In September, your Board established a Board directed fund to address this concern. Acting as good stewards on behalf of the people of McCabe, the Board used the majority of the income from the sale of the Royal Hopkin s house to begin to fund this reserve. We are working to build and maintain an adequate cash reserve so we can continue to step out in faith as good stewards and not excessively worry about paying our monthly bills. Capital Cash Reserves: At this point our biggest concern has to do with our capital reserves. Our mortgage interest rate was set to adjust in the spring of 2019, so for no extra cost, your Board made a conscious decision to refinance our loan about 6 months early to avoid the likelihood of paying a higher interest rate. We are seriously considering trying to get the mortgage paid off (about $525,000) within the next year. Open Door Property: There is the strong possibility that we will sell the former Open Door property. The proceeds of this sale could be used to pay off the mortgage, establish and fund an emergency capital expense fund (ex: if the boiler that is 60 years old would quit) or begin to chip away at some of the buildings and grounds projects that need attention. Right now, we are still paying a monthly mortgage and we are basically cash flowing this monthly payment. Even when we do get the mortgage paid off, our hope (Continued... )
2 is to continue to fund a capital projects fund for ongoing maintenance and emergency capital expenses Budget: Work is underway preparing to bring you a faithful 2019 budget proposal. We plan on having an all church meeting in December. Pastor Jenny Pastor Jenny is back from maternity leave. She continues to serve three-quarter time through the calendar year, at which time she will return to full time. She is developing some powerful, potential small groups along with her other pastoral responsibilities. Stay tuned! She continues to look forward to pulling together people to help kick off some new small groups like Griefshare, Financial Peace University and possibly a Stephen Ministry. Did you know? Our education wing is about 60 years old and could use a significant makeover to bring it up-to-date for children, families, groups and meetings. Our technology equipment is piecemealed together and could use a major update to provide us with a vibrant, safe and secure future. J.A.M. (Jesus and Me Sunday School) is up and running and for the first time in 11 years we have an initial enrollment increase in our J.A.M. numbers. We recently consecrated a Grand Piano that was given to us by the estate of Royal Hopkins. In service with you, Mark Ehrmantraut In Our Thoughts & Prayers Tina Mitchell and family on the death of her sister, Mary Stenger Leona Pearson and family on the death of her husband, Everett Pearson Al Ehrmantraut and family on the death of her sister, Emily Simon Bruce & Carol Keller and family on the death of Bruce s brother, Franklin Keller Cheryl Moch and family on the death of her husband, Andy Moch Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: Financial Freedom! (2018 Financial Stewardship Series) Well, friends, it's that time of year everyone's favorite time of year (ha!): the fall financial stewardship series and 2019 pledge drive! Okay, okay...so it's not everyone's favorite time of year, but we certainly hope we can help make it meaningful and important through our sermon and worship series, entitled Financial Freedom. If you're like me and I suspect many of you are in this particular way you sometimes worry about money. Most of us worry about money sometimes...some of us worry about money most of the time. And, if you know that worry, you know how all-encompassing it can be because, when we worry about money, everything else we worry about is bigger than it already is. The car breaks down? Well, not only do you have to go through the headache of getting it fixed, you have to make sure you can find the money to fix it. Have an unexpected medical emergency? Not only do you need to worry about your physical healing, you have to make sure you can financially cover whatever your insurance doesn't cover (or that you can pay out-of-pocket if you do not have insurance). Our fall stewardship series seeks to bring help, challenge, and good news in the midst of financial worry. Here are the dates and sub-themes for this Financial Freedom series: October 6 & 7 Less Is More (On earning, budgeting, eliminating debt, etc.) October 13 & 14 Stress Is Bad (On how money affects relationships.) October 20 & 21 Giving Is Good October 27 & 28 (On being part of something bigger than yourself.) Tomorrow Matters (On saving, planning, and leaving a legacy.) In the midst of this series, we'll be sending out pledge cards for the 2019 financial year. We will also be sending out prayer cards that we hope you'll use faithfully as you consider how God is calling you to give through McCabe in the coming year. We hope this series helps put you in the proper place financially and spiritually to consider that holy call. Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr

4 Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends! Happy Autumn! The season of cool, sunny days, trees ablaze with bright yellow, orange and red colors and, of course, jumping in those leaves when they fall! Oh, yes, it is also time to consider getting one s flu shot. According to the CDC, flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses for the season. It is recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive the vaccine unless a severe reaction has been experienced. Back for this season, is the nasal spray flu vaccine which is approved for use in non-pregnant individuals 2 years through 49 years of age. Because this is a livevirus, there are certain medical conditions which this option is not recommended. Also, there is a higher dose vaccine to be offered to those 65 years and older. It is always important to discuss which flu vaccine is most appropriate for you. 1 ONE THING Flu shots are available at your personal physician s office, City/County Nursing offices, pharmacies, and walk-in clinics. Be sure to notify your personal physician s office if you receive your flu vaccine outside of their office so it can be documented in your records. It has been difficult to determine the best time to receive the flu vaccine. The CDC recommends getting the vaccine by the end of October. They also state that getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial and may protect us into the early spring when there tends to be an influx of flu. Keep in mind that it takes about two weeks after receiving the vaccine for antibodies that offer the body protection against the flu to develop. The CDC recommends that children who need two doses of vaccine should receive the first vaccine sooner as the two doses are required to be given at least four weeks apart. This applies to children aged 6 months through 8 years during their first season of vaccination. During this season of flu, please remember to use good handwashing habits, keep hands away from your face (eyes, mouth and nose are entry points for those sneaky flu bugs!), get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and stay at home if you are sick. Let s do everything we can to keep ourselves healthy this flu season! Katie Schafer, from the ND Regional Aging Services, is offering an informative session on all of the different agencies available to assist in the Bismarck/ Mandan area. Please plan on attending this session on Tuesday, October 16 at noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 214 E. Thayer. Enjoy the beautiful art work of the Lord s hands this autumn. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions. As always, I am so very grateful for your prayers and support. God bless, Nurse Jane ONE THING: Christmas Shoeboxes October - Mid-November This is the 14th year for McCabe to participate in this wonderful program. These shoeboxes may very well be the only gift that a child of the Spirit Lake Reservation receives this Christmas season. There are about 4,000 children that the churches of North and South Dakota provide gifts for each year. This is a simple project. Wrap a shoebox (top and bottom separately) and fill with whatever a child of the age you choose might like. Put a rubber band around the box and mark it with a gift tag indicating the age and gender and bring it to the ONE THING display in the Great Hall. Because of the difficulty in matching sizes, only hats, mittens and scarves should be put into the boxes. The following are the age groups and suggestions for items: Infants - 2 years: baby shampoo, lotions, body wash, bibs, blankets, bottles, infant toys, soft books Girls 3-5 & 6-8: age appropriate educational items, books, small dolls or stuffed animals, crayons, watercolor paints or markers, games, puzzles, hair accessories, hats, mittens, scarves, boxed candy Boys 3-5 & 6-8: age appropriate educational items, cars, trucks, coloring/painting books, watercolors, markers, construction toys, Legos, books, games, puzzles, card games, hats, mittens, scarves, boxed candy Older Girls 9-11 & 12-14: purses, makeup, nail polish, hair accessories, hair products, perfume, games, puzzles, books, hats, mittens, scarves, boxed candy Girls 15 & up: same items as the girls ages 12-14, just a little more grown up Older boys 9-11 & 12-14: electronic handheld games, card games, watches, flashlights, books, hats, mittens, scarves, boxed candy Boys 15 & up: same items as the boys ages 12-14, just a little more grown up All items and/or boxes need to be brought to the church. This is a project of the Dakotas Conference and is run by Mike and Libby Flowers who are missionaries to the Spirit Lake Reservation.
5 Children & Family Children s Sunday Morning Discipleship Program What s Happening? This month, our journey through the Life of Jesus takes us to the time of Jesus first miracle as well as the miraculous catch of fish. Each week, kids interact with the Bible lesson in a large group setting followed by related games, experiments, crafts, discussion, etc. October 14 is Bible Presentation Sunday! Bibles will be presented to 1st and 3rd graders during worship services. See below for more information. In early October, the children s ministry rolling library will be making rounds to classes allowing children to check out one book or DVD. Kids and families are always welcome to visit the library in room E11 to check out books, movies and other resources. Navigators (6th-8th grades) - Middle schoolers will experience God actively, first-hand in a way that relates to their lifestyle and how they communicate. In September, students discussed taking charge of their health, habits, emotions and attitudes. In October, students will learn about outcasts Jesus encountered. Join us Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the youth room! 7 Fall is here and there is a chill in the air. You can stand in my yard and get leaves rained on you. I love it! I so want to thank Eve Circle and Marilyn for serving our Unit meeting on September 13. One guest speaker at unit was Jerry Suko, who reported on AWANA and Open Door. Also speaking was Karlee Chase, McCabe s new administrative assistant and Dianna Kindseth, the new McCabe financial administrator. Thanks so much to all three. They answered a lot of questions we had. The new slate of officers for our UMW unit was presented by Faye Hasche. They are: President: GerryAnn Small Vice President: Sharon Miller Secretary: DeEtta Phelps Treasurer: Kory Hagler Spiritual Growth: Irene Wentz Social Action: Marlette Pittman Nominating Committee: Faye Hasche Executive Committee also voted to donate $300 for the purchase of four UMCOR buckets. Way to go, ladies! I m so proud of our unit. When someone asks you if our hard work at fundraisers is worth it, yell -YES! We are the arms and legs of Jesus on earth. The rummage sale was discussed and will be held on October 20. I m so very happy and grateful that Linda Suko will be helping again. Thanks so much, Linda. You are so appreciated. Remember ladies we need LOTS of help. We won t be pricing everything this year as it will be a free will donation. Other booths pretty much stay the same. On Thursday October 18, we will be making apple pies and tarts starting about 11:00 a.m. So you have an apple peeler? Great, bring with you. We also need lots of other baked goodies and candies for the baked booth. We need all of you to make the Bazaar a success. October is the Dakota Conference at Legacy UMC in Bismarck. Our unit will pay for your registration. Because it s in Bismarck, a lot of our women should be able to attend. The fellowship is so worth it McCabe's UMW are asked to provide the travel treat on October 13. Here are a few examples for 2018: McCabe volunteers have prepared and served meals for The Banquet at Trinity Lutheran Church twice this year and the cost of the food that was prepared and served was 100% funded by your special giving designated to this mission. The cost of refurbishing and tuning the grand piano donated to McCabe by Royal Hopkins was paid for with undesignated memorials given in memory of the loved ones of the people of McCabe. The special giving of Royal Hopkins through the sale of his home funded $20,000 to Dakotas Conference bringing McCabe s apportionments commitment up to date in September; and funded $80,000 to a Board Designated Reserve for the Current Fund. The cost of the Wednesday night AWANA program for kids for the school year will be 100% funded with your special giving designated to this children s ministry. Special giving was designated toward principal reduction payments on the mortgage and has totaled $6,000 for 2018 to date, accelerating the pay-off date for the mortgage. For your convenience, the ability to give on-line has been added to the McCabe website and includes the same fund giving choices as the GivePlus Church mobile giving app. Additional funds will be added for the seasons and missions as the Church calendar year evolves, allowing you to support the ministries of McCabe electronically.
