2 The Sunday Readings Theme: God reveals himself in the elements of nature, but His presence is not always in sound and fury, in great natural phenomena. Sometimes He is a whisper barely heard and we must be ready and quick to catch His message. First Reading ( 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a) Scripture gives a mystical quality to mountains. Here man has his most intimate contacts with God. The High places are closely related to great moments in the lives of Moses, Elijah and Christ. In lofty solitude man communes with God. In this reading Elijah, high on Mont Horeb, awaits the coming fo God and finds Him in a gentle breath ow wind. Second Reading (Rom 9: 1-5) This is one of the few times that Paul lets his ldleep-seated feelings for his people reveal themselves. His love for them is so great that he could accept condemnation for himself if that would make them accept the Messiah. Gospel: (Mt 14: 22-3) Although this reading shows the power of Christ over the elements of nature, tis true message is the necessity of faith. Peter typically acts boldly and confidently, but Christ teaches him that he is still not wholly rid of self. There is much more to faith than admitting that Jesus is the Son of God. Thought for the Day: We must truly withdraw form the world to find God. Oh, there are evidences of Him in a sunset, a might wind, a great storm : but His deepest secrets are revealed to us in silence. How still we must be, how acute our senses, to hear a breath. But this is not news. During the Holocaust of World War II, millions of people were tortured and killed. This terrible tragedy led many people to wonder about human life. How valuable is a single human life? How valuable are the lives of the elderly, the unborn, the terminally ill? Are their lives worth as much as those of people who are healthy and active, working, and raising families? God creates human life and gives it value. And Jesus gave his life on the cross to redeem each individual human person. By doing this, Jesus said, Your life is worth my dying to save you. Through his own Resurrection, Jesus showed us the glory of our resurrection and of our living in the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that the body and soul of a person, separated at death, will be joined together again in glory at the Last Judgment. The person will be whole for all eternity. The feast of Mary s Assumption is a preview of what our lives will be. At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed, or taken up, into heaven body and soul. She did not have to wait for the end of the world, as we do. God granted her this special privilege because of her sinlessness and her fullness of grace. The Church has always believed in Mary s assumption into heaven. But on November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII focused the attention of the whole world on the Assumption of Mary as a dogma and mystery of our faith. This mystery shows us that God wants every human person, body and soul, to be in glory forever, just as Mary is now. This dogma shows how important every single human life is. Pope Plus XII hoped that by thinking about Mary s Assumption, people all over the world would develop a deeper respect for their own lives and their own bodies. He also hoped that people would grow in respect for the lives of others.

5 Have You Registered at St. Coleman s Church? Please Pray for our Military A Catholic parish is the single most important part of our Catholic Church. This is where we continue the mission of Jesus Christ. This is where we publicly express our faith, joining together with others to give witness of our communion with God and with one another. There are many reasons to register. A sense of belonging and identity in a parish community. Provides the parish community with a way to welcome you. In times of joy and in times of struggle, it is comforting to have the support of a faith family. It is a commitment to practice your faith. Gives a chance for you and your family to be counted and heard in the parish. Being included in the demographics of the parish helps in the planning for the needs of the parish. Gives the parish a way to connect with you. In order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony you will need to be a registered member. For religious education instruction and Sacramental preparation, the families of those attending must also be registered parishioners. St. Colemans welcomes our newest members! 6 2017 Fall Soccer League Is Now OPEN! Visit: and register today for the 2017 Fall Soccer League. If you prefer to register in person, there will be a registration table set up in the lobby of Parish Hall Friday, August 18 th from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, the day of the Teachers, Meet and Greet. Please note, at the in-person registration only personal checks or cash will be accepted. The cost for the program is $50 per child. There will be four levels of competition: Division 1) Kindergarten & Pre-K Division 2) 1st & 2nd graders Division 3) 3rd, 4th & 5th graders and Division 4) 6th, 7th & 8th graders Games will be played Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:40 pm and 6:30 pm. The first game is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5th and our season will conclude Thursday, October 5th. Immediately following the last game we will have a pizza party for all of our participants. As a special treat this year all soccer players will receive a Dairy Queen Oreo Blizzard at the season ending party. Pizza, Soda and Ice Cream can't beat that! Please help us out by not waiting until the last minute to sign up. Last year we had more than 140 players, and it takes time to assign every player to a team and to allow the coaches time to contact those players on his/her roster. Team rosters will be determined by the program director and his staff. This will ensure balanced teams. The coaches will have their hands full, so please be understanding of their time and commitment. This is an instructional league and our goal is to have the players learn how the game is played, as well as become familiar with the rules. Thursday, August 31st will be a practice day for all players and their coaches. We will use this time to become familiar with the rules and guidelines for our league. We are always in need of coaches and their assistants, as well as referees. It s a great way to earn service hours. If you know of anyone interested please have them contact: Coach Jack Leniart: 5leniart@bellsouth.net A Youth Ministry is finally coming to St. Coleman s We are adopting Life Teen s EDGE program designed to engage and guide middle schoolers from all churches and schools as they grow in the Catholic faith.
