Background on the Gospel Reading Today s Gospel follows immediately after the Gospel proclaimed last week, in which Jesus taught that he was the vine and that his disciples were the branches. In the example of the vine and the branches, we learned that our union with Jesus will lead to fruitful service. Today s reading extends this teaching to describe the kind of service that Christians are called upon to offer to others. When John wrote this Gospel, his community was influenced by a set of religious beliefs called Gnosticism. It appears that one of John s intentions was to distinguish Christian belief from the beliefs held by the Gnostics. Evidence of this can be found in today s Gospel. One of the tenets of Gnostic teaching was the importance of knowledge, or gnosis, as the determining aspect of faith. We read today s Gospel as a response to this teaching. In John s Gospel, we hear Jesus affirm that he is known by the Father and that his disciples will know the Father by knowing Jesus. In this passage, however, Jesus reminds his disciples that this knowledge is to be expressed in love. Those who know Jesus well and Jesus says that his disciples do know him will love one another. Knowledge leads to love, which leads to action. John reminds his community that Jesus taught that love is the sign of a true disciple and, thus, a true Christian. Even more, a true disciple shows a particular kind of love, sacrificial love. In the Greek, there are two words for love that are used in this passage. The first is agape. The second is philia. The first word is most often used to describe love for other persons and for God. It is understood as the highest and most perfect kind of love. The second word is used to describe the affection of friendship. In this context, John appears to use these words as synonyms. The root of the Greek word for friend comes from this second term for love, philia. By using this word, Jesus transforms the terms of his relationship with his disciples and redefines for them their relationship with God. In the Hebrew Scriptures, faith in God made one a servant of God. Here Jesus teaches that his relationship to his disciples is based on friendship, not servitude. 5 Ascension Thursday May 10, 2018 The Christian belief is that after Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday, He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Jesus then walked the Earth among His followers for forty days, continually teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven. The fortieth day, Jesus was eating, drinking and speaking among His followers. At this time, Jesus had commanded His disciples that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth. After all was spoken to His followers, Acts 1:9 states And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. According to the New Testament, the event of the Ascension occurred on Mount Olivet (Mount of Olives). The reading of Acts 1:12 states Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount that is called Olivet, which is nigh Jerusalem, within a Sabbath day s journey. Have You Registered at St. Coleman s Church? A Catholic parish is the single most important part of our Catholic Church. This is where we continue the mission of Jesus Christ. This is where we publicly express our faith, joining together with others to give witness of our communion with God and with one another. There are many reasons to register. A sense of belonging and identity in a parish community. Provides the parish community with a way to welcome you. In times of joy and in times of struggle, it is comforting to have the support of a faith family. It is a commitment to practice your faith. Gives a chance for you and your family to be counted and heard in the parish. Gives the parish a way to connect with you. In order to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, or Holy Matrimony you will need to be a registered member. For religious education instruction and Sacramental preparation, the families of those attending must also be registered parishioners. Another mention of the Ascension occurs in the Gospel of St. Luke 24: The verses state And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them. And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven. St. Mark also mentions the Ascension of Jesus in Chapter 16:19 stating And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God. King David wrote a prophecy of the Ascension in The Book of Psalms 67:19. King David stated: Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive; thou hast received gifts in men. This Psalm is located in Psalms 68:18 of the New King James version of the Bible. Unfortunately, there are not detailed mentions of the Ascension in the Holy Bible. One theory is based on how the apostles were dealing with all these events. There was a whirlwind of events occurring in a short amount of time. Jesus came to teach and He also performed miracles; He died; He rose from the dead; and then He reappeared on Earth for forty days. The fortieth day, he ascended into Heaven as the apostles watched. Ten days later, some of the followers were visited by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and were able to speak many languages. There was so much activity taking place including the death of their friend and mentor that perhaps they did not want to write very much regarding the Ascension. A box will be in the back of the church the next few weeks if you can donate any of these items. The Girls Scouts will be collecting the box next week to bring all donated items to APR.
