2 The Sunday Readings First Reading 2 Chronicles 36:14-16,19-23 The causes for the Israelites captivity in Babylon are described. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 137:1-2,3,4-5,6 A lament from exile for the loss of Jerusalem Second Reading Ephesians 2:4-10 In grace we have been saved, so that we may do the work of the Lord. Gospel Reading John 3:14-21 Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life. Background on the Gospel Reading The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday.Laetare is a Latin word that means rejoice. Traditionally, Sundays are named after the first word of the liturgy s opening antiphon. On this Sunday, the antiphon is taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 66:10-11). Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy that will be ours at Easter. Today s Gospel reading is taken from John s Gospel. It consists of two parts. The first part is the final sentence of Jesus reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who approached Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted Nicodemus with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that followed was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in the questions he posed to Jesus. In the part of the conversation with Nicodemus in today s Gospel, Jesus referred to an incident reported in the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for their complaints. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resurrection. The second part of today s Gospel is a theological reflection on Jesus words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection offered within the narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to John s Gospel. In these reflections, John elaborates on a number of themes that are found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and unbelief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. In John s reflection, we find an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world, but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives. 6 St Coleman s Sister School in Haiti During the past year, St. Coleman s Church and School have been proud to sponsor a Sister School in the Corail Community of Haiti of over 200 students in conjunction with Food for the Poor, a 501 (c ) ( 3) organization located in Coconut Creek, Florida. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. An estimated 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, needing food, clean water, and a safe place to live. Haiti is a bleak place for children. Twothirds of all Haitian children suffer from malnutrition, and 117 of every 1,000 children die before reaching their 5th birthday. Life expectancy is a mere 51 years for men and 54 years for women. Clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing are in short supply, which continues to fuel the spread of various waterborne diseases. With so many families focused on merely survival, many Haitian children never get the chance to receive even a basic education. Haiti s literacy rate is a dismal 53%. Corail is a small village in Petit Goave, in the south central region of Haiti, about a 90 minute drive from Port au Prince. The community has an estimated population of 3,600 residents, of which approximately 95% live on an income of less than US $1 per day. Most of the residents live in unsafe shacks made of sticks, wood and mud. Roofs made of old zinc sheets and thatch from banana and palm trees offer little protection from the elements. When it rains, water seeps in and turns dirt floors into mud. Food for the Poor has undertaken and completed Phase 1 of a Corail Community Development and School Project to build a new school, build 25 double-unit homes, a community center that also serves as a worship center, a safe water system and sanitation block to address the critical needs of the community. When the new school was dedicated last year, each student was given a Bible. Food for the Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 95% of all donations including donated goods, going directly to programs that help the poor. Your generous donation of $25, $50, or $100 to supply a child school supplies and tuition would be greatly appreciated. Taxdeductible donations are payable to Food For The Poor. If you are providing your check for school supplies and tuition, please put in the memo section of your check Corail School SC This year Food for the Poor is embarking on Phase II of the Corail Community Development. There are 30 additional families who Food For The Poor has identified as being in urgent need of homes. Each home costs $7,325 to build. If you are interested in making a donation of $25, $50, $100, $500 or $1000 or even $7,325 to build a home in Corail, Haiti, for a destitute family, please put on your check in the memo section Corail Community Development Phase II SC Thank you for your generosity. On the weekend masses on April 14 and 15, in the lobby of St. Coleman s church, we will be collecting any school supplies for school children that you may have at your home or that you would like to buy. Please bring any of the following donations: backpacks or book bags, 2- pocket folders, small 3- ring binders, lined filler paper, pencils, pens, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, rulers, pencil box or pouch, glue sticks, graph paper, multicolor construction paper, safety scissors, pencil sharpeners, spiral notebooks, composition books, chalk, chalk erasers, poster board, washable markers, scotch tape and paper clips. If you are interested in viewing more about or giving online to St. Coleman s sister school and community, please go on line at The mailing address for your check is Food For The Poor, 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, Florida Our contact person at Food For The Poor is Colossia Butts at , extension Colossia s address is colossiab@foodforthepoor.com. Our goal this year is to provide school supplies for 200 children for one year and to build at least 10 homes. Thank You for Your Generosity
