2 Theme: God s ways are not our ways. The Sunday Readings First Reading (Is 55:6-9) While the prophet places his confidence in God, who is always near us, nevertheless we must recognize that we think and understand with finite minds and can never therefore fully comprehend God or even His manner of acting. Second Reading (Phil , 27) Paul rejects the values of the world. For him life is in dying an he would prefer to die. Yet he chooses to be alive so that he can strengthen the Church he has founded at Philippi. It is the greatest sacrifice he can make for his beloved converts. Gospel: (Mt 20: 1-16) The Traditional explanation of today s parable is that the vineyard owner represents God selecting the Gentiles at a late hour to share in His kingdom. But also tells us something ab out God s grace and values. Many will be saved at the last moment, but on this we cannot presume. Thought for the Day: The thought must occur to us at one time or another that it does not seem just that a person who ignores and sins against God through most of his life should be saved and taken to heaven at the moment of death, while most of us have to live a lifetime of struggling to do the will of God. The answer to this problem is in the Gospel today. The reward of the kingdom in His gift. His manner of judging is far different from that of man. Although God made a covenant with Israel, He was prepared to broaden it to all men late in time. We do not understand His reasons, but we know by faith that they are valid. What is the definition of a Roman Catholic saint? Simply speaking, a saint could be said to be anyone who is currently residing in heaven. The Catholic Church, through the process of canonization, officially recognizes this fact. In the book "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma", we read that a saint is " a member of the Church [who] has been assumed into eternal bliss and may be the object of general veneration." A saint is also a person of remarkable holiness who lived a life of heroic virtue, assisted by the Church, during their pilgrimage on earth. They are as varied and exceptional as only God could create them, and each has his own distinct story. Based on the Catholic Calendar we will place the names of the saints next to the Mass Intensions. A sense of belonging and identity in a parish community. Provides the parish community with a way to welcome you. In times of joy and in times of struggle, it is comforting to have the support of a faith family. It is a commitment to practice your faith. 5 A Blessing of the Animals on the Feast of St. Francis In commemoration of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, there will be a BLESSING OF ANIMALS 2:00 p.m. on the lawn (South side of the Parish Hall) All pets should be secured by leash, travel case, etc. Keep your pets close by, safe, and don t forget, they may need some water. Proceeds of raffle and donations will be forwarded to the Broward County Humane Society. Blessing of the Animals on the Feast of St. Francis On the first weekend in October, people may notice something different at your local church. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi s love for all creatures. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated. Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected. However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator. Kevin E. You must register for the Virtus class online at Virtusonline. Org You must also register for fingerprinting on line. Please call the Rectory office at for information on fingerprinting as you need a code that we will provide. This is mandated by the Archdiocese of Miami that all Eucharistic ministers, ushers, church and school volunteers, be fingerprinted and Virtus trained. We will be monitoring those individuals who have not complied this year. If you have any questions about your status, please contact us at the Rectory Office. Common Questions If I do not work or volunteer with children, do I need to take the Virtus training session? Yes. All adults are protectors of children. The Archdiocese of Miami believes wholeheartedly in the power of Catholics working together. That is why the archdiocese has included in the Safe Environment Policy the requirement for all employees and volunteers, whether they work with children or not, to complete the Virtus training. It is your role in a faith community to keep your eyes and ears open, and to report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities. The Virtus training session illustrates how to do so effectively. If the only volunteering I do is with my parish carnival, do I need to attend the Virtus session and be fingerprinted? Yes. All volunteers are to be trained and background checked. No matter the frequency or the capacity, as an employee or volunteer in this archdiocese you are considered a person of trust. You are a part of the solution to the problem of child sexual abuse in our homes, parishes, and communities. You help ensure a safe environment for children be it at a carnival, school or church. How do I register for the Virtus training session or get more information? You may register for Virtus at ww.virtusonline.org and click on the word registration in the green column. Follow the prompts for a list of upcoming sessions and to register.
