Gospel Reading Luke 1:39-45 Mary visits Elizabeth, who sings praise to Mary and her child. Background on the Gospel Reading On this the last Sunday before Christmas, our Gospel reading prepares us to witness Christ's birth by showing us how Jesus was recognized as Israel's long-awaited Messiah even before his birth. The Gospel turns our attention from the ministry of John the Baptist to the events that preceded John the Baptist's birth. The story of John the Baptist and his parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah, are reported only in Luke's Gospel. Luke pairs the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus, establishing John's early connection to the Messiah. Our Gospel reading recalls Mary's actions after the announcement of Jesus' birth by the angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, her cousin, who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles that they and their unborn children will play in God's plan for salvation. If we were to continue to read the verses that follow in Luke's Gospel, we would hear Mary respond to Elizabeth's greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favor upon the people of Israel. In Luke's Gospel the Holy Spirit helps reveal Jesus' identity as God to those who believe. Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and sings Mary's praise because she bears the Lord. We sing these words of praise to Mary in the Hail Mary. Even John the Baptist, the unborn child in Elizabeth's womb, is said to recognize the presence of the Lord and leaps for joy. It is appropriate in this season of Advent that we consider the role of Mary in God's plan of salvation. Elizabeth describes Mary as the first disciple, as the one who believed that God's word to her would be fulfilled. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to everyone. Because of this, Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan for salvation. 4 Christmas Mass Schedule The Christmas Season Christmas Eve Monday, December 24 4:30 pm Children s Mass by The US Conference of Bishops Midnight Mass will begin at 10:00 pm Choir will begin at 9:30 pm Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25 9:00 am and 11:00 am December 31st 7:00pm Vigil Mass January 1st 7:00am 8:00am and 10:30Am The practice of celebrating Midnight Mass is traditional in the Roman Catholic Church, although many churches now hold their "midnight" Mass at an earlier hour. Since 2009, the Pope has celebrated this Mass at 10:00 pm, and as a result the official liturgical designation of these texts has been Mass during the Night since However, when the Mass does occur at midnight, it is still commonly called "Midnight Mass". Rico Marchetti, the Music Director has been working with a group of talented singers preparing a special program for midnight mass. In addition, you will hear 4 songs which are original compositions by Rico Marchetti. Magnificat and Let Us Walk in Love, before the mass and Psalm 98 Today is Born a Savior which is the responsorial plus Love Came Down at Christmas, the Communion meditation. This is the spirit of Christmas when people step up to help their church in a positive way. Your help was very much appreciated. Christmas is one of the most important days of the Church year, second only to Easter itself. It is the feast of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin "in carne" means "enfleshment"). It is a uniquely Christian teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar. The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him including the fact that he was born to die for us. The Christmas tree and the Nativity scene are popular symbols of the season and a tradition in many Christian homes. It is also traditional to exchange Christmas gifts with family and friends as a way to honor God the Father's gift of his only son to the world. Having received the gift of Christ, we naturally want to pass that gift along to our loved ones.

6 A message from St. Coleman s Women Club Thank you to all for your support for the Angel Tree Gifts and the Progressive Dinner Raffle Ticket sales. Due to your generosity, many Broward County children will have Christmas this year. The Broward Sheriff, Santa s Foundation,Light of the World Clinic and Respect Life were the recipients of the gifts. The Holy Family Center was overflowing with toys and gifts. It is so true : It is in giving that we receive. And a big Thank you for all of the many volunteers for working so hard to make it all come together, especially Betty O Connell who works tirelessly coordinating all of the angels and gifts and makes this project a success! Our next General Meeting is Wednesday, January 17th, 2019 at 7:00pm. We will have a makeup artist come in and teach us the tricks to looking younger!
