NEW SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY Helping those in need in our community Our first project is to provide Baby Bundles to local pregnancy centers. We have already made a delivery to Life Choices in Metuchen. For future Baby Bundles, we are requesting donations of baby powder, size 1 diapers, baby shampoo and lotion, individual packs of wipes and baby oil. Please mark all donations Baby Bundles and put in the crib in the foyer of the church. Thank you! For further information, please call Karla Resetar at Designer Bag Bingo St. John Vianney HSA is hosting our annual Designer Bag Bingo on Sunday, Nov. 12. Doors will open at 1:00 PM, and we will begin calling Bingo at 2:15 PM. Twenty-one of our students will be participating in the Grammar School Competition at Bishop Ahr High School tomorrow. We wish them luck as they participate in five events: Jeopardy, Problem Solving, Dramatic Arts, Forensic Science, and Athletics. Friday, October 10, is the last day of the first marking period. Report cards will be distributed at conferences on Wednesday, November 15, for grades 5-8, and on Thursday, November 16, for grades K-4. Conferences will run from 4:00-7:00 PM. On Friday, October 10, class pictures will be taken. All students in Grades K-8 must come to school in their regular school uniforms. If your child was absent when individual pictures were taken in October, they can have their picture taken on this day as well. They must bring the picture envelope with payment enclosed. Pre-School News If your child missed having their individual picture taken in October, you can bring them to the main school Parish Center on Friday, October 10, at 8:30 AM. 3 Music Ministry News We wish to thank our high school cantors who have been doing a great job leading the singing at some of our weekend liturgies for the past few months!! Our thanks go out to: Taylor Eccles, Alyson Fakhry, and Abby Varker!! Adult Choir Our parish adult choir enhances our liturgies each Sunday from September through mid-june. The choir also sings for many special occasions during the year, such as: Midnight Mass, Holy Week, Confirmation, and our Mass of Remembrance in November!! The choir also provides two beautiful concerts for the parish, one during Advent and the other during Lent. We are always looking for new people to join with our very dedicated group!! We welcome all adults (And high school students) to be part of our choir! The adult choir sings weekly at the 9:00 am mass (And once a month at the 10:45 am mass). We practice each Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 Pm in the church. Our next rehearsal will be on Wednesday November 8 th. Children s Choir Our parish children s choir is made of students from our parish from grades two and up!! The children in the group love coming together to sing for Sunday liturgies as well as special events during the year. The choir sings for our parish Christmas Pageant and 4:00 pm mass on Christmas Eve, as well as the 9:00 am mass on Easter Sunday!! We practice on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:00 pm in the church. We sing twice a month at either the 9:00 or 10:45 am mass! Our next rehearsal will be on Tuesday November 7 th!! We sing again on Sunday November 12 th at the 9:00 am mass. We are also hosting the parish breakfast this month! So please join us in the school cafeteria for breakfast following 9:00AM Mass on November 12 th! Folk Group Our Parish Folk Group enhances the 12:15 liturgy each week. The Folk Group is under the direction of Ms. Jennie Esposito. Rehearsals are held weekly at 11:15 Am in the conference room adjacent to the church gathering area. Jennie is always looking for more singers as well as instrumentalists to join with the Folk Group! Teenage/College Group This group of young adults in the parish generally enhances the 12:15 Pm mass on the fourth Sunday of each month. Rehearsal is held at 11:15 am in the conference room. If you sing or play an instrument, then this group is for you!! Please speak to Jennie Esposito after 12:15 pm for more information on both groups!! 4 In the wake of the recent hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Florida, Louisiana and Texas, and the deadly earthquakes in Mexico, Bishop Checchio has asked that the diocesan-wide Disaster Relief Collection, originally intended to close September 30, be extended to support the relief and recovery efforts in the affected communities. You may donate online at or write a check made payable to Diocese of Metuchen with Disaster Relief in the memo line and mail to: Disaster Relief Donation, Diocese of Metuchen P.O. Box 191 Metuchen, NJ Please give generously, as your means allow, to help our brothers and sisters who are most in need at this time. The Diocese will accept donations through Thanksgiving Day, November 23. All monies collected will be used to assist victims of these recent natural disasters, working with local Catholic relief and recovery agencies in the affected regions. 5 World Day of the Poor November 19, 2017 Let us love, not with words but with deeds. At the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis established the World Day of the Poor, a new celebration to be held annually on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. All of the faithful are invited to join Bishop Checchio at Evening Prayer for the first World Day of the Poor on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 5 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen. This will be an occasion for our community to reflect on how poverty is at the heart of the Gospel and an opportunity for those who work to aid, care for and comfort those in greatest need to be affirmed, inspired and sent forth with a renewed commitment to building a culture of encounter and bringing people together across differences with tenderness and solidarity. Please consider attending! A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly We were gentle among you, as a nursing mother cares for her children. With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that, in receiving the Word of God hearing from us, you received it not as a human word but, as it truly is, the Word of God which is now at work in you who believe. Imagine the great persecutor, whipped, chained, jailed and shipwrecked, comparing himself to a nursing mother. The rough edges seemed worn down, and his love and affection burst forth. Paul was gentle, but also stern. The great saints, and our recent popes, have exhibited these same characteristics and virtues. Look at the World Youth travels of Saint John Paul II. Remember the sound teaching and leadership of Pope Benedict. Look at the humble presence of Pope Francis. We are asked by all of them to take not only God s Word but also their example, for that same Spirit is at work in each one of us. When we are ready to criticize what is going on, remember that God s Spirit is truly at work, especially when we find the teaching challenging and difficult. Surely the popes we have cited along with Saint John 23rd were gentle in guiding the church through tumultuous times. We give thanks to God for giving us them. ELCOME!
