A Family Reunited with Esther Jones I m told that at a recent Operation Christmas Child delivery in Mexico, a 13-year-old girl named Maria was present with an infant in her arms. When one of the OCC volunteers greeted her and asked if she had brought her little brother with her, she answered, No, this is my son. Maria was excited to receive a shoe box containing school supplies and personal items that she badly needed. She was especially excited to find a soft blue stuffed elephant just perfect for her baby boy. She was filled with joy to learn the simple Gospel message of how Jesus loves her. However, when she opened the envelope with a picture and note from the sending family, she burst into tears and cried uncontrollably. The OCC volunteers tried to comfort her as they inquired why she was so upset. She pointed to the picture of the sending family and sobbed. Finally able to regain her composure, Maria shared with the volunteers that the sending family were relatives who had disappeared over two years earlier. In their community, when people disappear, they are usually never seen alive again. She now had an address for her missing relatives. How amazing our God is to use a simple shoe box gift to reunite a family! This is our 19 th year to be involved with OCC. Since 1997, more than 240,000 shoe box gifts have been sent from our Michiana area to the waiting hands of the poorest children of our world, providing them with school supplies and personal items as well as the story of Jesus in their own language. This year our goal is to send another 33,000 from our area. Please plan to impact the life of a little child by packing a box (brochures and boxes are in the church foyer). Our shoe box collection week is fast approaching--november at our school. Thank you for sharing Jesus' love. If you have questions, please contact Esther Jones at or occesther@gmail.com. 2 Page 2 - Niles Westside News From Pa s t o r Da r rel Determined Desire for Crimson Crime God has a determined desire for every soul as seen through the cross of Jesus Christ. There is nothing of greater significance for every living human being walking in this demondarkened world, than our Savior s shed blood. There is nothing scary about this blood that was poured out for us. Not to terrify us with our sin-horrors, but to ensure our victory. Though your sins be as crimson, they shall be as wool, and though they be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). When His crimson blood covers our crimson crime, we are always left with the miracle of snow-whiteness. Will a Savior like this want to scare us into heaven? Does this perfect act of love not remove every fear? When fear is gone, gratitude and adoration bursts into Thanksgiving. I invite you to experience God s determined desire for our crimson crimes, and anticipate that joyful Thanksgiving for such a determined Savior. M e e t O u r N e w M e m b e rs : L o e n s e r Fa m i l y by Anke Pagaja The Niles Westside Church is excited to welcome back the Loenser Family! They recently moved back to the Berrien Springs area from Tennessee. Rick, and his wife, Christina, as well as their children Benjamin, Joshua and Matthew, have settled right back into their home church. They also have a daughter, Ashlynn. We are glad to have them back so that we may again worship the Lord together. Rick and Christina were both born and raised in the Niles area. They met in high school and have been married for fifteen years. They first started attending Niles Westside together in 1998, although Rick had attended since he was a child. While at Westside, Rick has often served in the various Sabbath School classes and also as an elder. Christina has led in Kindergarten, and has also taught in Cradle Roll for many years. In 2011, the Loensers moved from Niles to Portland, Tennessee. This made it possible for Rick to attend the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia located in Madison. Rick will be graduating from MTSA on November 20. He will take his boards shortly after, which will allow him to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). What an incredible achievement and blessing! Christina is a dental hygienist by profession. Currently she focuses most of her time as a stay-at-home mom. She homeschools Ben and Matt, while Josh attends Niles Adventist School. Ashlynn is twenty-one and a senior at Grand Valley State University. She is studying pre-dental. She enjoys reading science books mainly because that's all she has time for these days! Ben is twelve and in 6th grade. He likes Legos, soccer and animals. Ten-year-old Josh is in 4th grade. He also enjoys Legos, playing, and engaging in battle with his brothers. Matt is six and in Kindergarten. He also loves his Legos, soccer, and his pets. The Loensers had a mini farm in Tennessee, which included twenty chickens, four goats, and a miniature teacup pig named Hamlet. Currently they have a pug named Rosie and two cockatiels, Chico and Sativa. As a family, the Loensers really love nature and hiking. When they lived in Tennessee, they thoroughly enjoyed exploring the many state parks and beautiful waterfalls Tennessee had to offer. They are looking forward to seeing more of the country this coming year. We're glad that you're back at Niles Westside, Loensers!
Page 3 - Niles Westside News M other- Da u g h t e r R e t rea t by Kristine Horvath October 9-11 were very exciting days for many mothers and daughters in Michigan. It was Mother-Daughter Retreat at Camp Au Sable, and approximately 250 mothers and daughters from all over Michigan attended. Niles Westside Church was well represented with 10 mothers and 14 daughters. Michigan Conference Women's Ministries put a great deal of effort into arranging and organizing the Autumnthemed weekend get-away. The weather was perfect, with cooler temperatures in the mornings, warmer temperatures in the afternoons, and the blessing of peak fall colors up in Grayling, Michigan. Although they didn t organize the weather or the beauty of the surroundings, they did do a lot to organize the activities for the weekend. Guest speaker Laurie Snyman gave interesting and entertaining thoughts throughout the weekend on gratitude vs attitude. After Sabbath School, church, Sabbath dinner, and a rest or walk around the lake, the girls were able to do basket weaving. (No, it wasn t under water for those of you who had that flit through your heads.) Saturday night was exciting with Minute-to-Win-It activities planned, such as knocking over water bottles with a ball in a stocking you wore on your head; quickly stacking a cup tower; bouncing ping-pong balls into a bucket with a partner using a clip-board as a back board; emptying a tissue box filled with ping-pong balls with it tied to your waist; and many more fun and creative things to do. They offered popcorn, decorate your own caramel apples, and a wagon ride to the fort and back in the DARK. The activities weren t limited just to Sabbath and Saturday night. Friday and Sunday offered horseback riding, paddle boating on the lake, and go-cart racing before going home. Thanks, Michigan Conference Women s Ministries! You did a fantastic job creating a great weekend for the mothers and daughters of Michigan. Faith Under Construction kids club is on hiatus until more volunteers can be found to help with the activities. Contact Phyllis Shupp for more information.
Page 4 - Niles Westside News God's Leading in My Life Reflections from Pastor Bill Dudgeon My first ministry was teaching children. For the encouragement of our youth and young adults, if you want to minister, the Lord will use you. In September 1952, when I began teaching school, I was 19 years old. The school was a small, oneteacher rural school in Vienna, New York, about 50 miles north of Syracuse and 8 miles from Camden, the nearest small town. The enrollment was about 12 or 13 each year. During pre-school week, while praying that the Lord would enable me to reach the children, I rode my three-speed bicycle to visit every Adventist family I could reach that way. On opening day, the Lord blessed us with 22 children. The room was crowded to say the least. The church hired a second teacher who took grades 1-3, leaving me with grades 4-8. Because I had become an Adventist through attending seventh and eighth grades in a small church school, it was inspiring to me to see all those children enrolled in the school. Not all of the new pupils were from Adventist homes. After seventeen years of teaching, with the last ten as teacher of ninth and tenth grades and being principal, the Lord called me to pastor three churches and a company. We moved to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. One of the churches, Barre, was just beginning to build a school. It was inspiring and fun to have a part in that project. My last full-time assignment was the Central Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After retirement in January 1995, I immediately moved to Gallup, New Mexico, as a part-time worker to raise funds and supervise the finishing of a community service building for the Native Americans. In August 1998, I moved to Buchanan, Michigan, and became a part-time pastor for the Michigan Conference, first in Bangor and Pullman, then in Dowagiac. The last eleven years have been spent as associate pastor at Westside, with Chikaming added on for the past four years. Answered prayer has always been inspiring to me. Much of the work of building the school in Barre, Vermont, was done by the members. There was a chapel in the school which we planned to use as a church. The Wednesday before we were to have our first worship service in the chapel, some of us were working on finishing touches. The carpet was to be laid the next day. The same evening the organ and chairs were to be moved in, as well as the rostrum furniture. The others had left for supper, and I was alone. The carpet store called and said they could not be there until next week. But you must come tomorrow. People are coming in on Saturday from all over Northern New England. We have no way of knowing who will come, and no way to notify people. The answer: We have a problem and cannot make it until next week. That ended the conversation. I immediately knelt to pray. Before the prayer was finished, the carpet store called again. We will lay the carpet tomorrow. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Everything went as planned. Before you call, I will answer, says the Lord. Upon moving to New Haven, Connecticut, I asked Mark Finley, the conference evangelist, to schedule a series in that church. He said it would be in four years. During my first board meeting there, I was told not to invite any evangelists to come. Their experience with evangelists was to have people baptized and in a short time disappear. Because I made no response, they did not realize that Mark had already been invited. Pastor Finley, along with his family and team, came in four years. In January, Mark, another ordained minister, and I conducted five Daniel Seminars, scattered around the New Haven area. A total of 250 people attended these seminars. His six Bible workers trained members to give Bible studies. When Mark began his six-week series in May, nearly all of the seminar attendees came, plus many others. At the end, more than forty people were baptized. Throughout the following four years of my tenure, many others from that series were baptized, and many who were not members continued to attend the Sabbath services. Those baptized as a result of Mark s Spirit-filled work are the backbone of that church today. Here at Westside, back when I was here every week and the children knew me, it gave me great joy to have many of the children ask me to give them Bible Studies and prepare them for baptism. When parents came and told me that their children understood what I was saying in my sermons, I thanked the Lord that He was blessing and enabling me to fulfill my commitment to Him and to myself: that of reaching the children of the congregation. Praise the Lord! The most exciting experience lies ahead of us. After teaching prophecy for sixty-three years, I am now seeing prophecy being rapidly fulfilled. What we see is an indication that much more is happening behind the scenes. We can only imagine. All of us need to be wide awake to observe and be ready at any moment. We have no idea how rapidly the final movements will be fulfilled. Like the Israelites in Egypt on the night of the Passover, we need to be ready for Jesus whenever He closes human probation. We have this hope. No matter what happens between now and the Second Coming, let us all plan to see each other in His kingdom. Thank you, Pastor Bill! Blessings on your retirement!
Page 5 - Niles Westside News The Lord s Library by Phyllis Shupp, Church Librarian Our library is open for church members immediately following Sabbath School and remains open until 11:30 a.m. We invite you to come and check us out, and see what new DVDs, CDs, and books we have to offer. We have invested in a series through Amazing Discoveries presented by Elder Rick Howard. It's called, The Omega, the Train of Deception Progresses, and it comes under the series title of Emerging Deceptions. They are individually titled: Back to Babylon--Will We Ever Learn? and Papal Teachings in God's Church. New to our library is Streams of Light, the Essential Experience. It's a three-disk series with Doug Batchelor as the speaker. We also have a newer section in our library devoted to Health & Diet. We have added to that section a three-part series by Walter J. Veith called Life at Its Best, with subtitles such as Your Health, Your Choice; Health and Happiness; and Sitting on a Time Bomb. Another DVD by Professor Veith is titled A Health Lifestyle. New Adventures in Odyssey CDs for the young and young-at-heart: Countdown to Christmas, and Eugene Returns! For our Primary/Juniors, we have a new book called, How God Used a Snowdrift, from the Building on the Rock Se- ries. With a hostile army rapidly approaching his little Baltic village, Karl barricades the door to the cottage. As mother reads the Bible, God uses a snowdrift to protect them. Marguerite Henry is the author of Brighty of the Grand Canyon. This story is about a little burrow who roamed the cliffs of the Grand Canyon and touched the heart of an old miner, a big-game hunter, and even President Teddy Roosevelt. He remained free until a mishap occurred to the prospector who befriended him, and Brighty risked everything to bring this man to justice. Juniors/Teens will enjoy the new series Freedom Seekers by Lois Walfried Johnson. Ask for book #5 and join in as Jordan makes plans to travel to Chicago to turn over the gift to help fugitive slaves. Will a life-threatening steamboat accident and Libby's new willingness to forgive them bring about the breakthrough she needs? This true-to-life series of books comes from the golden age of steamboats, the rush of immigrants to new lands, and the danger of the Underground Railroad. 6 Page 6 - Niles Westside News Hard Living by Tami le Roux, Director Is living in your family hard? Do you have fights and stress in your home all the time? Sometimes it can be like that in our homes. Sometimes it feels anything but peaceful. Life is so busy and rushed that we can t take the time to cook, or even think about cooking or cleaning! If your family can say yes to any of these, then you are in good company. Jesus never said that our living would be easy. He never said that we would have no problems or stress as we go through this life. All He promised was that He would never leave us or forsake us. We are not alone! How we respond to the stress, fights, and difficulties in our homes and families is the game changer. If you (like me) internalize and carry all that stress around, it can seem even harder. But God calls us to respond to life and its difficulties with faith that He will never leave us or forsake us. He wants us to respond to yuckiness with kindness, to rudeness with patience, and to stress with Let It Go at Jesus feet. God wants us to do our BEST for Him. Amid stress, amid fights, amid chaos, be your best for God. Our joy and peace, while all around us is chaos, can only come from God, our Peace in this storm of life. Let s claim our Peace together this Holiday Season. Because Jesus loves me I WILL always do my BEST. Button Award Photo by Tami le Roux Pathfinder News You Can Use by April Hughes, Deputy Director Recently the Lake Union Conference offered a leadership training weekend at Andrews University for people working in youth ministries. The weekend offered complete training courses in Pathfinder Basic Staff Training, Master Guide seminars, and more. I am especially proud of the following TLTs, Nathan Horvath, Brandon Hughes, and Amber Benjamin, for completing the Pathfinder Basic Staff Training course. If you see any of these teens, please congratulate them on their accomplishment. This is one step in their leadership training that I know will help each of them in their ministry work now and in the future. On another ministry note, our club is in the midst of working on our annual Thanksgiving Baskets project. We have been collecting non-perishable food items to put together food baskets for individuals or families in our community. Please keep this project and the recipients in your prayers. The Pathfinder Club is also having a candle fundraiser in November. We are selling candles through Faith Fundraising. There are a variety of scents available with scripture passages or quotes. Each hand-poured candle is highly fragrant, long burning, and made in the USA. The 12 ounce canning jar candles are made with lead free wicks and all natural wax. The club earns 50% profit from each candle that is sold. We are currently raising money for new camping equipment and expenses for a club campout. You can place an order with any club member or call or the club to place an order or get more information. All candle orders are due on Wednesday, November 18. Thank you again for your continued prayers and support. If you would like to pray for club members by name, a list is available through Director Janessa Howell. If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Janessa at or via at niles4flagspathfinderclub@gmail.com. (Mud Lake Bog Photo by Rod Snow)

Page 8 - Niles Westside News Niles Adventist School Q Q Michael Jakobsons, Principal Like us on Facebook! We bring our children to Jesus to be touched by His love, trained for service, and educated for Heaven. Mrs. Grecia Campos, New Spanish Teacher My name is Grecia America Campos, and this is my first year teaching at NAS. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, but moved to Michigan last August when my husband began the seminary program at Andrews University. In my 39 th week of pregnancy, we packed up our things and made our way across the states! My son Benjamin was born on the first day of school. My husband, Brian, had to tell his professors that his wife was going into labor. A few of his professors made some funny jokes, but when they realized he wasn t joking, they excused his absence. We have really enjoyed our time here in Michigan and do not want to leave! It has been very different than living in a busy city. Some of the things we have enjoyed doing have been visiting Fernwood, eating at Tim's Too in St. Joseph, and running on the roads where there is hardly any traffic. This is also our new hobby. On October 11, we ran the Chicago marathon, which was an experience we will never forget. We had so much fun that we vowed to run a marathon every year from now on. I encourage everyone to do this at least once in his or her lifetime. Before moving to Michigan, I taught Kindergarten at Glendale Adventist Academy. Before that, I worked as an Assistant Dean at Rio Lindo Adventist Academy. I hold both experiences close to my heart, just like I do NAS. I am very happy and honored to have been given the opportunity to be at this school where I am able to share God s love with others through the ministry of teaching. Niles Westside Adventist Church Sabbath, December 12, at 11 a.m. (NAS students arrive by 10:45 a.m.) Come with NAS on a journey to relive a wonderful event that took place some 2,000 years ago... back to the small town of Bethlehem.
Page 9 - Niles Westside News people. This was a great class, and I would take it again. I recommend this class to everyone I know. ~ Isabella For my social breakout, I had Art Around Us taught by Mr. Nathan Greene. In this breakout, we were sketching wild animals in black and white. Mr. Greene told us to look for the big shapes, and he also told us some good tips for drawing. I really enjoyed this class. It was cool to see him sketch animals and then make them look real. ~ Ryleigh My second class was Surviving the Wilderness. This class was actually pretty fun, and we learned a few things. On the first day, we learned about what we should do to prevent being lost or be ready if you do get lost. That same day, he told us a few stories of people that went into the wilderness, and what they did wrong and what they did right. The second day, we learned how to build a fire. ~ Juan Lifestyle Improvement for Teens (LIFT) October 4-7 at Camp Au Sable The NAS 7th & 8th graders went to LIFT with Lauren Snell and Rodrick Snow as their chaperones. They learned a lot and had fun too (including canoeing, horseback riding, go karts, etc.), as is reflected in the following statements from the students: I had a great time at LIFT. I can't wait to come back next year as a "responsible" eighth grader. Thank you for making this possible, Mr. Jakobsons. ~ Jeremy My second breakout was Kitchen Creations. Our teacher gave us a crossword that would have the same words as our creations. She had us make smoothies, bread, pizza, and brownies. We did this in groups, so we all built teamwork at the same time. ~ Sean My third and favorite breakout was The Gift of Music. They taught that we are all performers, and the world, God, and the angels are the audience. They also let us play for worship. This was a fun experience. ~ Jalen The first breakout I took was Who's in My Face, Who's in My Space? The class helped me learn to not put too much information on the Internet because it could have serious consequences on your life. ~ Justin My spiritual breakout was Contagious Christian. That class was taught by Mr. Davisson. He told us stories about things that have happened to him and how God miraculously helped him. I love how spiritual he is, how caring and helpful he is to other During worship, Pastor Ortiz talked about a lot of things. But I think his message was, Don't be afraid of stepping forward and wanting to share about God's love. He wants us to be connected to Christ and God. He is telling us that he wants us to build a friendship with our heavenly Father and Christ. I really enjoyed this trip, meeting new friends, and building a relationship with God. I can't wait until next year! ~ Melissa My second breakout was Nature Restoration Project. In this class, we helped rebuild a beaver dam. This was important because it makes it much easier for a beaver (which hasn't been there for years) to live there. We trimmed sticks, and hauled buckets of dirt, mulch and rock to make the dam taller. ~ Asher Nothing to Fear for the Future was my favorite class. They taught us about the end of time and preparing for it. I enjoyed the class a lot. It was cool to learn about this. ~ Gabe Photos by Lauren Snell
