2 FROM THE PASTOR My Dear Parishioners, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, the preparatory catechesis for the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015, points out that St. Augustine called the love between husband and wife the seedbed of society. The similarity between family and parish is striking. Parish can be understood as a large family of brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. And the family, as noted in Love is Our Mission, is like a small parish the domestic church.. For me, the first and most obvious similarity is the Mass. The celebration of the Eucharist is much the same. Families come from their particular homes to gather in the larger home that is their parish church. As one family in Christ, we tell again the stories of our faith, of our history, of our lives as revealed in sacred Scripture. And we then turn to the altar, to the table of our parish family, for our most sacred of meals, to feed on eucharistic food that is lovingly set before us by God. In word, sacrament and community, we leave this family gathering renewed in grace and amply nourished for our lives, knowing that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves and our own family. We belong to a parish community and to the universal Church. How beautiful, how powerful! The parish should be able to help us on both counts, to help surface what we are called to be for our Catholic faith community (and the world), and to help us find meaningful ways to use our gifts in service to others. Parishes exist, much like each family, to give glory to God and reflect the love of God in difference-making ways for society. The ultimate mission of the Church, which we all must participate in, is the building of the kingdom of God, where all social structures are rooted in the prevailing peace, justice and love of God. So yes, parish is a place for giving of yourself. It should also be a community where you receive, where friendships and small communities can form, where ministries and resources enrich you and your family. Connect with parish leaders and other parishioners to find out what is there to bless your family. Parishes are dynamic systems, much like families. Each of us is called to give and receive in the building up of the community. In the receiving, we are enriched. In the giving, as Pope Francis points out, we find joy. Fr. SACRED HEART MICROGIVING 2018 Thank you to everyone who has signed up to participate in our 2018 Microgiving campaign! After signing up for it myself, I found this as an easy way for our parishioners to donate a few cents together to generate extra income for our parish. Since I signed up, I have accumulated $9.76 in donations to the parish. The more I use my card, the more I m able to give a few cents to our parish. It may sound like a slow process, but if we all put our few cents together every month, we can achieve possibly tens, hundreds or even thousands of dollars in donations. Please sign up using the link below. It will be more helpful if you register the card you use the most, either debit of credit. Rest assured, your information is well protected by the MicroGiving Company. sacred-heart-parish/ Should you encounter any problems in signing up please do not hesitate to call me here in the parish office. After you sign up please let me know so that I can update the administrator that you are now part of this giving campaign. Once again, thank you and God Bless all of you! During this month Catholics, both in church and in the privacy of their home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1). During the month of May, we are all encouraged to pray the rosary as much as possible. In the foyer you will find a handout on how to pray the rosary with all the Mysteries listed. Please feel free to take home a copy and give copies to those you know are unable to come to Mass.

5 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Mon. Acts 14:5-18; John 14:21-26 Tue. Acts 14:19-28; John 14:27-31a Wed. Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8 (St. Athanasius Memorial)) Thu. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; John 14:6-14 Fri. Acts 15:22-31; John 15:12-17 Sat. Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21 Sun. Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48; 1 John 4:7-10; John 15:9-17 EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP When I was a teenager, I had an experience that truly changed my life and helped me to give Jesus all of myself. I had been baptized Catholic and always had faith, but it took a specific event to really shake me out of the comfort of my life and set me on a path devoted to God. I didn t get knocked off a horse or find an open tomb, but for me it was powerful enough to make a huge impact. Testimonies of how people came to live as intentional disciples have great power. Often the stories do not include singular events or people; instead they speak of a gradual unfolding of faith. It is often the culmination of several events and the work of more than one person that brings a person to the point of real decision. Living as good stewards, we can help move people forward in their journey with God. Giving of ourselves freely can move human hearts like few other forces. God working through us can bring others to see that simply saying that Jesus is the Savior of the world does not mean we live our lives differently. It takes more thought and reflection on our part to move past words to intentional acts with intentional results. I don t know if all those involved in that event when I was a teenager knew what an effect their good stewardship would have on me, but I am so thankful they provided a way for God to touch me. I have spent my entire life trying to pay them back by allowing God to touch others through me. Just what person might God touch through you today? -Tracy Welliver, MTS WEEKLY REFLECTIONS GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR APRIL 29TH Are you ready for a trim? In today s Gospel, we hear the familiar teaching of the vine and the branches. Jesus reminds us that if we remain close to him-living in humility, following God s law, loving our neighbor we will notice a positive change in our life and the lives of those around us. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit. The Holy Spirit is life-giving. He is fruitful. The Spirit of God won t refuse grace to a heart that is open. As we progress through life, learning how to live and love, we grow. Our personalities flower. We discover what it is to be a blessing to others. We also experience lack, loss, and the results of our failures. We know what it is like to wither at times, particularly the times when we willingly separate ourselves from Jesus. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. For most of us, this experience of being disconnected and off track generates a desire to return to what is right and good, to return to the vine. But this Gospel is more than Are you in or are you out? Even when we remain in God, when we follow Jesus, we are not exempt from the challenge, the pruning. Everyone that bears fruit he prunes. A prudent trim is necessary in the natural world of trees and vines. Dead wood, broken shoots, and diseased branches need to be cut back in order for the plant to bear fruit. Jesus wants us to be healthy! He says as much himself: By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. Take a look at your life today. Where are you bearing fruit? Where do you need to be pruned? QUESTION OF THE WEEK For Youth: Jesus is the vine we are the branches, connected to Him as our life-source. When do you feel most connected to Jesus in your everyday life? How can you go there more often? For Adults: How does your own connection to Christ, the vine, affect your daily life? What image from this reading helps you see the importance of this connection to Christ?
