2 FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your generosity and for being part of the Sacred Heart Parish community. As you might have heard in parish announcements or read in the bulletin, we re introducing a new and powerful way to support our parish: Round up donations. Round ups are small contributions tied to purchases you make with your credit or debit card -- just like the coins you throw in a jar. Make a purchase and this service will automatically round up the transaction to the next dollar and donate the difference to the parish. For example, buying a $2.49 cup of coffee will result in a $.51 donation. Your credit card information is fully protected and safe. Proceeds will be 100% used here in our parish. Round up giving is not intended to replace the offertory, nor is it a major financial commitment. It s just another way to help our community. Over time, these nickels and dimes especially from a large group of people really add up for our parish. I am looking for 30 individuals who are willing to start this giving. FLU SEASON Health Officials are warning of a Flu Epidemic across the entire United States!!! As a precaution until the flu season has passed: We will no longer offer the Precious Blood. We will no longer hold hands at the Our Father. Do not shake hands/hug at the Sign of Peace. Use hand sanitizer and wash your hands often. PARISH WISH LIST The Parish is in need of a few items. We are still in need of 3 Blu Ray DVD players for our Faith Formation Classrooms. The cost is approximately $75 each. If you can donate toward the purchase these items, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to two generous donors: $350 for the new blower and the donation of a new lawn mower. STEWARDSHIP CORNER Collection Summary Ash Wednesday: $1,561 February 17/18: $4,765 February 24/25: $4,673 March 3/4: $7,569 For fiscal year Budgeted for Collections: $280,000 Total for 35 weeks: $200,129 weekly Goal: $5,385 Average Weekly Collection: $5,718 Second Collection This weekend our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and bring Christ s love and mercy to all people here at home and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the CRSC, and help Jesus in disguise. LENTEN PENANCE SERVICES We perform penance to shake ourselves free of our attachments to sin and the distractions that keep us from recognizing the presence of God in our lives. Reconciliation allows us to put God in the center of our lives. Attending a Lenten Penance Service helps us prepare our hearts for the beautiful season of Easter. Starting our journey at St. Elizabeth Parish (located at 12 th & S Streets), we will visit 6 other churches and will finish at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe around 2pm. 4 ANNUAL CHRISM MASS Please join Bishop Soto and the clergy of our Diocese at the annual Chrism Mass to be held on Thursday, March 22nd at 6:00pm at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. The Chrism Mass is one of our most important Diocesan celebrations where Bishop Soto will bless the Holy Oils that are used in Sacramental celebrations in all the parishes of the Diocese throughout the year. 50 S PLUS CLUB Do you want to meet people your own age (50 or more) and have a fabulous meal too? Come to the 50 s Plus Club on Tuesday, March 13th at 11:30am. We gather at St. Joseph s downstairs meeting room for a potluck lunch and a brief meeting. It s informal and fun. SOCIAL MINISTRY SPECIALIZATION SERIES The Department for Evangelization & Catechesis and of the Office of Catholic Charities & Social Concerns will be hosting five 5-week Social Ministry Specialization Series at St. Anthony Parish,, 660 Florin Rd., Sacramento starting Saturday April 7, The five week course will give a foundational understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and provide practical tips to be effective social ministers. GOD IS CALLING/DEUS VOCAT Girls ages 13 to 17 are invited to a summer retreat God is Calling/Deus Vocat. Participants will be able to listen to vocation stories, have fun, pray and learn about the different charisms and vocations (consecrated, married, religious and single life) to begin thinking of their own calling. Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 5:7-9; John 12:20-33 WEEKLY REFLECTIONS EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. John 3:16 When I first saw each of my three children, I loved them with a love that I did not realize existed in me. These were flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone, and were the result of the love between their mother and me. This made them mine. My love for them continues to be so strong as they grow older and I cannot fathom ever losing them. Then I look around and see friends of mine who have lost a child. It makes me want to hold them tighter and not let go. But as I have continued to grow in this stewardship way of life, I realize that these three wonderful human beings and not really mine. They belong to God. They are entrusted to me in this world, but they belong truly to the One who loves them even more than I do. Yet, it is not easy to offer them back to God, especially due to tragedy. If that day ever were to come, how could I handle it? Not only did God offer his Son to the world, the offering was done with full knowledge that the Son would die a brutal death. God loves us so deeply he placed Himself in the very position that any parent dreads the most. So this Lent I will look at my children and I reflect on the depth of love a parent has for a child and the even more profound love God has for us. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR MARCH 11TH Why is the world the way it is? We all wonder that from time to time. Each successive generation projects rose-hued longing on the past and casts furtive glances at the impending future. We see forces beyond our control in nature and in the newspaper. The world is changing and we re being pulled out with the tide. In the face of this confusion, today s Gospel features one of the most oft-quoted Scripture verses of all time: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. But if Christ has come, why is the world so challenging? Why is the world still - to our eyes - being carried off in a proverbial hand basket? Jesus response is a deeply personal one. This is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light. Patterns arise, habits are formed, and systems become engrained, but each is the result of an interconnected web of human choices. Where do we stand? Our answers, perhaps, vary from week to week, hour to hour, missed traffic light to spilled coffee to teenage child s rebellion. The world isn t perfect because we aren t perfect. Our parish is flawed because we re flawed. Our families need work because every one of us needs to be converted. Christianity is a process, not a destination! This, Jesus invites us to consider our own lives. Where in our own lives do we prefer darkness to light? What flaws are we trying to hide? Humbly acknowledge those places today. Ask God for the grace to be transformed. Share with your spouse or a friend where you d like to improve this week. Whoever loves truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. For Youth: Is it difficult for you to say I m sorry when you hurt another or get off track in your life? Why or why not?
