2 Coming Soon Micro-Giving: An easy way to support our parish How many of us still collect coins in a jar, saving all those pennies, dimes, and quarters for a special occasion? Check out this unique way to help support the parish. Think about buying a cup of coffee for $2.25. The next nearest dollar is.75 cents away ($3.00), right? The remaining amount, called a roundup, can be donated to your parish through a company called WeMicroGive. Working with The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Sacramento, WeMicroGive can safely and securely link your credit card or debit card and track the roundups each month. This innovative and effortless way to give is already used by credit card companies for various social causes. Now, you can use the same web and mobile technology to support your parish on every transaction you make! And, what s more, the parish gets to keep the entire amount of your donation minus the transaction fees. Just designate any credit or debit card for roundup transactions, and WeMicroGive handles the rest using a secure encrypted system recognized by 9,000 financial institutions. You also have full control you can track your donations on a donor dashboard, set limits to your monthly contribution or just give a fixed amount. You can even stop at any time. Why not give it a try, and help our parish financially through roundups! Name/ Welcome/Bienvenidos! In the lifetime of our young people, we will see electronic payments overshadow traditional methods of paper payments. In order to position ourselves to continue doing the work of God in the future and to make it as convenient as possible to be a cheerful giver to God s work, we have decided to offer online giving to you. In addition to easier access to giving and more engagement with young stewards, online offering allows us to more easily track contributions for budgeting, saves us from large fees on check processing and allows us to more accurately forecast expenditures and needs. MyEoffering is a service our parish has teamed up with to give you the ability to send your offerings online in the same way that many of you already pay bills and purchase products. You can set donations to match your pay periods, and even send your one-time donations to special offerings. This service allows you to give any amount, any time, anywhere, with your computer or mobile device. Now you can control how and when you give your tithes. Signing up is as simple as going to our church website, and look for the green donate now icon. That button will take you to the myeoffering page for our church. Simply sign up and begin giving online today! If you would like more information or assistance, our parish nurse Sandy Downing has offered to help,

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE: AN INVITATION TO AWARENESS What are you hungry for? Sometimes the answer is obvious: pizza, Chinese food, a juicy steak. Our spiritual hungers are rarely that easy to identify. The season of Lent, our 40-day preparation for Easter, is our annual invitation to grow in awareness of those deeper hungers. We need Lent to help us recognize that our meaning and mission are rooted in Jesus dying and rising. Together with those preparing for baptism, we join in outward signs of our inner conversion. Our year-round prayer, fasting and almsgiving take on new meaning during this season. Catholics were once well known for their practice of not eating meat on Friday a specific form of fasting called abstinence. Stories abound of the lengths Catholics would go to keep this law. Of course, as with any law, it was not that difficult to meet the letter of the law and violate its spirit. One might enjoy a fine lobster dinner or fish fry at a local restaurant and still meet the law s requirements. Catholics were also called to limit their food intake on a variety of other fast days. The reforms which followed the Second Vatican Council sought to simplify the often complicated questions that arose regarding fast and abstinence while re-emphasizing the continuing need for such practices. The current laws took effect in They read simply: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast, i.e., eat only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at any other time during those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. The spirit of the law may invite us to fast from other activities as well: from television or computer games, from eating out or from gossiping. These minimum requirements make the most sense when they are combined with prayer and almsgiving. These age-old disciplines reflect our most fundamental concerns: our relationship with God (prayer), with our bodies (fasting) and with each other (almsgiving).
5 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Mon. Daniel 9:4b-10; Luke 6:36-38 Tue. Isaiah 1:10, 16-20; Matthew 23:1-12 Wed. Jeremiah 18:18-20; Matthew 20:17-28 Thu. Jeremiah 17:5-10; Luke 16:19-31 Fri. Genesis 37:3-4,12-13a,17b-28a; Matt. 21:33-46 Sat. Michah 7:14-15; 18-20; Luke 15:1-3, Sun. Exodus 20:1-17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-25; John 2:13-25 WEEKLY REFLECTIONS EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Recognize God In Your Everyday Moments I have had the honor of coaching all three of my kids in soccer. When you are a coach of a team of little ones, along with the fundamentals of the game and good sportsmanship, you want to teach the value of teamwork. If they can learn about how a team functions and why working together matters, that lesson can benefit them for many years to come. The Body of Christ is a type of team. We are all called upon to use our talents and gifts in such a way that they complement those of others. We are stronger and capable of so much more together than when we are apart. Our stewardship isn't just about our personal call of God to cultivate our gifts and give them back with increase to Him. It is about how our stewardship way of life builds up the Body of Christ. The Body cannot function as God intended it to if parts of it are not fully giving of themselves. In community, we have the power to change the world around us because we bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who need to hear it and witness it by our actions. This Lent, consider how you fit into the Body of Christ. How can your gifts and talents make the Church stronger? You just might be the missing component of a team that really needs help to make the greatest impact for Jesus. -- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR FEBRUARY 25TH How are your Lenten resolutions? By the time week two rolls around, plenty of well-meaning people have skipped, neglected, or outright forgotten their Lenten resolutions at least once. It can be easy to start excusing our Lenten commitments altogether. Last week we saw Jesus driven into the desert. This, we see Jesus leading his disciples to an equally barren place: he led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. But what happens there? And he was transfigured before them and his clothes became dazzling white. Today s Gospel reminds us of the goal. We don t enter into the desert for the sake of suffering, but for the sake of transformation. Mountain imagery is prevalent throughout Scripture. The sacrifice of Isaac, Moses receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah s revelation of God as a tiny whispering sound: all these occur on the mountaintop. Mountains are strenuous to hike. To assist the traveler in the assent, trails often involve switchbacks. These lead the traveler back and forth across the mountainside, sometimes appearing as if hardly any ground is gained. Perhaps Peter, James, and John hiked a similar path as Jesus led them up the side of Mount Tabor. A climb is difficult. A climb in a barren place leaves you thirsty, exhausted, and quite possibly frustrated or discouraged. Yet this is precisely how Jesus leads his closest disciples. Why? Because he has something to reveal to them. Practically speaking, Jesus needed to bring Peter, James and John away from the crowds for this revelation of glory to remain hidden. There are spiritual truths we will encounter only if we pass through difficulty. So let's persevere this Lent! Today s Gospel invites us to trust that, if we persevere in following Jesus, he'll lead us to something beautiful and glorious as well. QUESTION OF THE WEEK For Children: Jesus invites you to be close to him, to see him with clear eyes. What is Jesus like as a friend? For Youth: What do you most want God to help you with? For Adults: Sometimes we can see Christ with clear eyes, as the disciples did on that mountain. Share about such a time in your own life.
