2 FROM THE PASTOR FAITH FORMATION IN THE PARISH, PART 2 The Church is the sacrament of God s love in the world. In the same way the family is a community life and love. It educates and leads its members to their full human maturity and it serves the good of all along the way. In its own way it is a living image and historical representation of the mystery of the Church. The future of the world and of the Church pass the way of the family.: (John Paul II's Homily, Nov. 30, '86) Our parish Vision of Faith Formation also acknowledges the responsibility of the local church and its ministers to support the parents in fulfilling the promises made at the time of the baptism when you committed to parenting your child in a special way, to teach your child religious values. By choosing baptism for your child, you have professed a belief in Jesus Christ and in the community of the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II has stated that It is not enough for parents to possess good will and love itself. They need to know how in order to function effectively as educators of their children. This they will acquire by reflecting on their own experiences, with other parents, with professional educators and with priests. Formation in Faith is a lifelong journey. We fulfill part of our responsibility to you as parents/guardians by offering Adult Faith Formation and Parent/Guardian Faith Formation processes in the parish. Baptism of a child leads the parent to make one of their most definitive and free decisions to enter active church life and to affirm the value and the teaching of Jesus. Baptism of a child confirms the parents own conviction toward what they believe, value, live. The Church promises at baptism that it will be a part of the daily life of the child through its rituals, service and concern. The Church can and does create an atmosphere through a variety of experiences ways in which faith is most likely to develop. We provide activities relevant to the children s needs to learn the faith story of the community, activities to acquaint the child with Christian heritage, models for life, concrete aspects of God's revelation, a retelling of faith stories and the stories of saints and other Christian heroes, opportunities for service and special liturgical celebration, a nurturing of personal growth development, faith filled models for living. We take very seriously our responsibility to plan and carry out faith formation programs and processes that will augment the faith formation that the parent does each day through witness, heart to heart talks and teachable moments. As parents live their faith and create and authentically Christian life-style, they prepare the ground for the seeds of faith to grow during the years when children are imitating, personalizing and establishing their life of faith. While God gives his free gift of faith, parents help nurture and strengthen that gift. Our Faith Formation of Children and Youth as well as our Sacramental Preparation process is the primary way we acknowledge and accept our responsibility to assist the families in our parish to fulfill their role as the primary educators of their children in matters of faith and to support what our Holy Father states the future of humanity passes by way of the family. We acknowledge and promote the Declaration on Christian Education which states that families are to be Disciple makers, baptizers, initiators and disciple makers (Vatican II, 3) through our various Faith Formation processes at Holy Spirit. It is with this dedication in mind that we ask the families enrolled in Faith Formation of Children, Faith Formation of Youth and Sacramental Preparation to realize the importance of faithful attendance in our various formation processes so that we might assist you in fulfilling your four main tasks as outlined in Familiaris Consortio: The family is to form an intimate community of persons. The family is to serve life, both physically by bringing children into the world, and spiritually by handing on values and traditions as well as developing the potential of each member to serve life at every age. The family is to participate in the development of society by becoming a community of social training and hospitality, as well as a community of political involvement and activity. The family is to share in the life and mission of the Church by becoming a believing and evangelizing community, a community in dialogue with God, and a community at the service of humanity. (Familiaris Consortio,, 21) It is necessary for us to have guidelines with which to fulfill our obligation to our young people and their families, to the Vision of Faith Formation in our parish and the Diocesan guidelines for Sacramental Preparation. We have tried to create some flexibility within these guidelines and ask that you realize the necessity for the guidelines and accept them in the spirit of your responsibility as well as ours in helping to form your young person in faith. There is an old poem that stresses that children learn what they live. More accurately, they learn what you live. If you work on you own relationships with Jesus Christ, if you see your religion as a life-long process of growth, your young person cannot help but learn Jesus Christ. If you practice your religion by participation in the Catholic Community they will come to appreciate the importance of Eucharist in your life and eventually in theirs. IF you take their religious education seriously, they will, too.

For more information, please call SUNDAY EUCHARIST Always Thanksgiving: The liturgy of the eucharist refers to the part of the Mass that begins with the collection and the preparation of the altar and the gifts of bread and wine. What are we doing in these actions? Much of the answer lies in the word eucharist. Derived from a Greek word, it means thanksgiving. The eucharistic prayer, beginning with The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts..., and ending with the Great Amen, is the central part of the Mass. It is proclaimed over bread and wine, the basic signs of life and death, food and drink from the tables of ordinary people. We praise God for creation. We give God thanks and praise for Jesus, and for Jesus saving deeds. We ask God that the abundance promised at this holy table may be shared with the whole world, with all who seek God, even with the dead. The eucharistic prayer although said aloud only by the priest is not the priest s prayer. The entire prayer requires every baptized person s full, conscious and active participation. That does not mean that everyone reads the words aloud that wouldn t work! Rather, it means that we must join our hearts to the words sung or spoken by the priest, that we must assume an attentive posture, put aside the missalette and sing our parts with gusto and sincerity. In the end, eucharist is what our life as Christians is all about. In suffering or in joy, in confusion or routine, our life is always to be praise, always to be thanksgiving, always to be a sharing of God s abundance with those in need. Stipends: Stipend is the older term associated with the monetary offering given to a priest with the stipulation that a Mass would be offered for a specified intention. The current Code of Canon Law continues to permit the practice, but has modified the terminology, referring to an offering rather than a stipend. The practice has its origins in the custom of the faithful providing the necessities of bread, water and wine for the eucharist, as well as food for the clergy and the needy of the community. Masses in which prayers were offered for specific intentions, for example, for a good harvest, in time of disease or as part of funeral rites, would need to be specially requested of the community s clergy and they would be compensated appropriately. Any Mass is of infinite worth, and through the revised general intercessions, the assembly prays for many intentions at each Mass. Yet there are times that our prayers are focused on one intention, particularly at weddings and funerals, or on the anniversary of a death. Thus, it makes sense to speak of an intention associated with a celebration of the Mass. The Mass offering is a free-will donation and should never be seen as paying for a Mass. In fact, priests are not allowed to accept more than one offering for any Mass, nor are they permitted to receive more than one offering per day, even though they may be obligated to say more than one Mass. To encourage uniformity, some dioceses have established a suggested standard offering.

5 WEEKLY REFLECTIONS READINGS FOR THE WEEK Mon. Ezekiel 24:15-24; Matthew 19:16-22 (St. Bernard Memorial) Tue. Ezekiel 28:1-10; Matthew 19:23-30 (St. Pius X, Pope Memorial) Wed. Ezekiel 34:1-11; Matthew 20:1-16 (The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary) Thu. Ezekiel 36:23-28; Matthew 22:1-14 Fri. Revelation 21:9b-14; John 1:45-51 (St. Bartholomew Feast) Sat. Ezekiel 43:1-7ab; Matthew 23:1-12 Sun. Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ephesians 5:21-32; John 6:60-69 EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP We can easily feel obligated to attend a party or other event that we find ourselves invited to as a guest. If we want to go, then we get dressed up and rush off with anticipation of fun and good times with friends. If we dread going, we get ourselves together slowly and arrive late, hoping that the event will not be so long and we can then get on with the rest of our day. The difference in our feelings may have to do with many aspects: the host, the attendees, the reason for celebration. Either way, the invitation has been given to us because someone feels that our presence would make a positive difference. Our response is entirely our own. We decide how we will answer the invitation. Every, every day in fact, you and I have received an invitation to a banquet more celebratory and grander than any party. The host is actually Jesus Christ himself, and he has prepared a feast that promises to satisfy. He has prepared for this event by giving all he has to give. No host has ever been more gracious. His hope is that you will be happy to attend for your presence does make a tremendous difference. Would he invite you if attending made no difference at all? Will you RSVP with a sense of joy and anticipation? If this is just another invite that obligates you and you approach the event with indifference, the host wonders if you really comprehend what he went through to make this meal possible. He also wonders if you really understand what is truly being celebrated. Tracy Welliver, MTS GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR AUGUST 19TH In this s Gospel, the conflict escalates in the Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the crowd. How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus doesn t seem to help, however, and only drives his point home with more emphasis. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become substantially his own Body and Blood. We celebrate this sacrament in the Mass. Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive. My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. What is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our bodies, providing essential calories for our survival. Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints, regulate body temperature, and protect sensitive tissues like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive the spiritual equivalent of these essential elements. Like water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace moving through us. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. The Eucharist connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union with him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we receive with deep humility. As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our love, separates us from sin -- even wiping away venial sins -- unifies us with the universal Church, and helps commit us to humble service. Together we are nourished for our mission in the world! QUESTION OF THE WEEK For Children: How does receiving communion help you grow in your faith? How does it help you love others? For Youth: Jesus promises us eternal life if we follow him and believe. What makes it hard for you to believe? What is easy about faith? For Adults: How does your faith in Jesus nourish your own life? How does the Eucharist nourish you?
