2 FROM THE PASTOR FROM TEARING DOWN TO REBUILDING: A COMMUNITY OF FAITH GIVING GLORY TO GOD My Dear Friends, In the past few months, our parish community has been busy working on the Front Entrance Project. Our daily business and schedules, especially Masses, have been affected. For Masses, we had moved in to the gym for several months. Then a few weeks ago we were entering through the side doors of the church in order to celebrate Mass in the church once again. Daily Masses were in the Parish Center. It was months and days of impermanence. After the long wait, we are now back to our regular life with a more beautiful and easily accessible entrance to our Church. The process was messy and time consuming, but the result is the muchawaited progress and development. I want to thank you for your patience in the process. I want to thank all those involved in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of this project. And most especially, as one community of faith, let us pause and thank God for the success of this project. All glory belongs to him forever! Fr. Eric

CELEBRATING UNITY IN DIVERSITY: THE DAY OF THE DEAD By: Laura Vallejo The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebration focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray and remember the loved ones that have passed away. As part of this celebration, which originated in Mexico, people frequently construct an altar known as an ofrenda in memory of their deceased loved ones. The name ofrenda came because people usually place on the altars offerings such as candles, flowers and personal possessions. To prepare for this special day, a family builds an altar containing things the loved one enjoyed in life, and also items intended to draw their soul back to the world, like flowers, candles and food. In this tradition, death is celebrated, and people celebrate to pray their loved ones who have died. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on Nov. 2, which is All Souls Day on the Catholic Church calendar. Its origins are the Aztecs festival dedicated to celebrating the dead. To create an ofrenda, first determine the size: A table, shelf, or a whole room can be used, with boxes, chairs, bricks or hay as the base. Altars can be simple or elaborate. Two-tier altars represent heaven and earth. Three-tier altars represent heaven, Purgatory and earth. They can also represent heaven, earth and the other world, according to the Aztecs; or in the Catholic tradition, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Seven-tier altars represent the seven levels that must be passed through to reach heaven. Image: Usually a picture or painting of the person who is being honored is placed at the top of the altar. The Cross: Every altar has symbolism that refers to the cross; this element was added by the Spanish missionaries to incorporate Catholicism into the ofrendas. The cross usually is set next to the image of the person being honored Arch: Set in the highest part of the altar, the arch symbolizes the entrance to the world of the dead. It usually is decorated with yellow marigolds, the symbol of death. Cut Paper: This represents joy. Candles: These are used as guides to this world. Four big candles are set, symbolizing the four cardinal points. Water: Water has several meanings. It reflects the purity of the souls and the regeneration circle of life and death. A glass with fresh water is set on the altar so the souls can refresh themselves and continue their journey. Sometimes a bowl of water with soap and a towel are set on the altar so the dead can clean up. Flowers: Yellow marigolds are usually spread all over the altar; besides serving as decoration, their scent guides the spirits. Skeletons: These are a reminder that death is always present. The skeletons can be made of sugar, clay or chocolate, and usually have colorful decorations. Food: Days before the altar is set up, people cook traditional dishes such as tamales so the dead can enjoy the smells. Bread: Represents the generosity of the host. Alcohol: Sometimes small jars of tequila or beer, or the drink that the dead person used to enjoy, are placed on the altar. Personal objects: Belongings of the dead person are set on the altar so the spirit can remember moments of his/her life. If the dead person is a child, usually toys are displayed. 5 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Mon. Philippians 2:1-4; Luke 14:12-14 Tue. Philippians 2:5-11; Luke 14:15-24 Wed. Philippians 2:12-18; Luke 14:25-33 Thu. Philippians 3:3-8a; Luke 15:1-10 Fri. Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9,12; 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17; John 2:13-22 (The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Feast) Sat. Philippians 4:10-19; Luke 16:9-15 (St. Leo the Great Memorial) Sun. 1 Kings 17:10-16; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12:38-44 EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP You can ask many Christians if God is the most important person in their life, and without much thought, they will respond, "Yes." However, just saying it does not make it true. It is the answer that we have been programmed to give, but I am not sure most people reflect too long on what the answer really means. Is God more important to you than all your worldly possessions? Is God more important to you than your spouse or your children? Oftentimes, we would like to believe that God holds the most important position in our lives, but our actions give us away. We do and say things demonstrating that position of top importance belongs to things, circumstances, or simply ourselves. If we placed God first in our lives, we would be more generous, happier, and more fulfilled. The amazing thing here is that the ultimate self-help action is to turn from our own wants and desires and focus all that energy on God. We actually help ourselves the most by thinking of ourselves the least and turning it all over to someone else. Of course, God knows that. God does not ultimately benefit by anything we give Him. The fruits come to us by putting Him at the top of the list. Then we give Him those fruits to find we have now even more than when we started. How important is God in your life? Your answer could be the key to life that you have been looking for all along. Tracy Welliver, MTS WEEKLY REFLECTIONS GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR NOVEMBER 4TH You are not far from the kingdom of God. What does it mean to be close to God s kingdom? In today s Gospel, Jesus is in a dialogue with teachers of the law. They know well the Law of Moses, with its complex codes, expectations, and punishments. What will Jesus say? You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength... You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus effortlessly distills all the books of law into two commands. The simplicity of the Gospel message doesn t mean it s easy to follow. Far from it! The simplicity of the Gospel indicates its totality. Anything that requires the passions of our heart, the choice of our soul, the reason in our mind, or the strength of our body -- all of this ought to be animated by love. As you can imagine, that means pretty much everything! The love of God and love of neighbor is meant to flow into our entire lives. The Gospel can appear complicated because life is complicated. Not every outcast is easy to love. We lack the knowledge or compassion to heal everyone who suffers. Personal sacrifice is not always noticed or valued. In the face of the unknown, fear can be easier than faith. Life's circumstances can seem like obstacles to God s love, not opportunities. And yet Jesus command still stands. As you reflect this week, examine those areas where it s easy to love. Thank God for them! But take some time to consider the people and circumstances that challenge you. Ask God to show you what it means to love there. How is He inviting you to enlarge your heart, strengthen your soul, open your mind, and persevere in your strength? How is He inviting you to love? QUESTION OF THE WEEK For Children: How often do you put God first in your life? Can love others as much as you love yourself? For Youth: What do you think Jesus meant when he said to the scribe, You are not far from the reign of God? For Adults: When you heard the Greatest and New Commandments, which one should you improve on in your own life?
