3 From the Vicar Dear Frieds We have fially fiished with Christmastide, (which eded with the feast of the Presetatio of Christ i the Temple, last Suday, 31st Jauary) ad hardly ca we draw breath, before we are cofroted with the begiig of the ext seaso i the church s year; Let - which begis o Ash Wedesday, 10th February. Oe year we seem to have weeks ad weeks before the start of Let, the ext, it is upo almost without our realisig. The issue of fixig the date of Easter cotiues to cause problems ad a few days ago, it was aouced that the Archbishop of Caterbury, the Most Revered Justi Welby, hopes to remedy the situatio I wish him well! It would brig to a ed oe of the logest-ruig disputes withi the church, throughout the world. The hope is that the chage could be made withi the ext five to te years, i a move that is likely to have quite serious repercussios for us all, whether we work or are still at school. The Archbishop says he will be talkig to other leaders of the various deomiatios withi the Christia Church, icludig Pope Fracis ad the Coptic Pope to hopefully egotiate a agreemet. It is oe of those decisios where all parties will eed to agree a tall order ideed! Pope Fracis has already discussed chagig the date of Easter. Last year he said that we have to come to a agreemet about chagig the date, at a meetig of priests from aroud the world, accordig to the Catholic News Agecy, but that was as far as it wet. Our Archbishop did remid us that churches have bee attemptig sice the teth cetury to fix the date of Easter, which at the momet is set with referece to the moo ad the su it could be a uphill struggle. The legal foudatio for chagig the date of Easter has bee i law sice the Easter Act of I order for the chage to happe, i a ideal world, all churches eed to agree to it, eve though the law actually allows the Govermet to simply decide to fix the date, Parliamet has deferred to churches, so far. For the record, sice the fourth cetury, the date of Easter always falls o the first Suday, after the first full moo, after the sprig equiox! (I hope that s clear!?) That meas of course that it varies hugely from year-to-year, leadig to all the mix-ups, cofusio ad icoveiece. Will the date of Easter ever be fixed? Who kows? Watch this space but do t hold your breath! Iam yours i Christ, Joh. 3 Joh Russell St Joh s Vicarage Pipers Hill, Great Gaddesde HP1 3BY joh_russell@live.co.uk tel: Christmas Flowers Very may thaks to all those who geerously cotributed to our Christmas flowers. I hope you were able to get to church to see them. They certaily lasted well, with the fial oes beig dismatled just a moth after they were first displayed. Val Mills

7 Great Gaddesde Bellrigers - Sue Collyer Ido love the Christmas festivities, but I also love this time of year whe the cakes ad chocolate have all bee eate, thigs have calmed dow ad there's a opportuity to take stock ad pla for the year ahead. We rag o several joyful occasios over the Christmas seaso for the Carol service o Suday 20th where we also played 3 carols o hadbells; for the crib service o Christmas Eve; ad also of course o Christmas morig - i my opiio, there's othig better tha hearig the bells rigig out loud ad clear o Christmas morig I hope of those who live aroud the church agree! Those parishioers who live close to the church may have missed our traditioal celebratio of the arrival of the New Year - sadly this year we did ot have eough rigers to rig i Ica report the outcome of the Wester District quarter peal evet which took place over the weeked of November 20th to 22d whe 15 quarter peals were attempted i 9 differet towers. A great weeked was had by all ad 13 of the 15 attempts were successful. There were 3 attempts at Bob Doubles, 3 at Plai Bob Mior, 2 at Plai Bob Major, ad other attempts icluded Mixed Doubles, Superlative Surprise Major, Gradsire Triples, Lodo Surprise Mior, Boure Surprise Mior, Double Norwich Court Bob Major, ad Pudsey. A very impressive selectio of methods beig rug i oe district! Three of us from the Great Gaddesde bad took part by rigig i our ow tower. Je achieved her first quarter peal rigig the teor behid to a selectio of mixed doubles. Very well doe Je. I got my quarter rigig the umber 3 bell iside to Bob Doubles ad Val made sure we were well looked after rigig with us. I was lucky eough also to rig the treble to a quarter peal o the Trig bells. It is a big step doig a quarter peal it ivolves rigig cotiuously for about 45 miutes, keepig cocetratio ad focus while rememberig the patter ad progress of the method ad all the time tryig to produce perfect strikig ad regular rhythm. I maaged to do all of these thigs some of the time, but certaily ot all of it. I am remided of that great Morecambe ad Wise sketch where Eric poited out that he played all the right otes but ot ecessarily i the right order! O a more sombre ote, we rag our practice eveig o the 16th December with the bells half-muffled as a mark of respect followig the sudde ad uexpected death of Soia Wood, a well-kow ad respected member of the parish who has bee a log-stadig member of the church, also makig great cotributios to the woderful creatios of the flower team. She will be much missed ad we had the hoour to rig with the bells ope o Jauary 22d for the thaksgivig service which was a celebratio of Soia's life ad a opportuity for her may frieds ad family to share together i remembrace. 7

We have spet a lot of time teachig our pupils that although obody likes gettig thigs wrog, we should use these setbacks to motivate us. Challege ad effort fort meas we are learig ad growig our brais. 21 Gaddesde Estate News Farmig This witer has see so much rai that the groud is absolutely saturated. We have ot bee able to complete the spray programme yet. With luck coditios will improve eough for this to be carried out over the ext few weeks. The mai reaso for the curret sprayig is to elimiate the charlock growig i the fields sow to i the oilseed rape, the seed of which ca cotamiate the sample. Aother cosequece of the groud coditios is that it is ulikely that we will complete our hedgecuttig programme for this witer, bearig i mid that uder the ew rules of Cross Compliace we caot cut hedges after the ed of February. As a experimet we have sow part of a couple of fields with a cover crop of fodder radish. This will both act as a gree maure for a sprig crop ad with its log root we hope have a similar effect as deep cultivatio. I the meatime we had our aual ispectio from NSF Agriculture to eable us to remai compliat with the Assured Combiable Crops Scheme. As with all ispectios this ivolved a detailed check o all the grai ad other stores as well as a thorough check o all our paperwork. Luckily with the exceptio of oe mior techical observatio we have passed for aother year. It is a useful disciplie as the tidy-up sometimes reveals thigs which we eed to atted. Almost all of the 2015 crop has bee sold ad moved, though there are just a few lorry loads left, to be shifted this moth. Stella Frogley We were sad to lear of the death of Mrs Frogley, who died i Jauary. She was the secretary at the Home Farm for may years i the 1960s ad 1970s. She ad Gwe Tomli kept the office ruig smoothly durig some very busy times of farmig developmet. I those days before the advet of computers, they ra a very oisy NCR Accoutig Machie. Prior to harvest each year, Gwe used to orgaise a team of off duty fireme to joi the farm staff, walkig through the ripeig fields of wheat ad barley rougig the wild oat plats. A programme, which over the years, proved successful i reducig this pericious weed. Estate maiteace We are very busy at preset with property maiteace, both refurbishig houses ad cottages followig chages i occupatio, ad upgradig some of our commercial uits. Forestry We have ot yet fialised our programme for Most of our effort recetly has goe ito uderstadig ad completig the ew forestry maagemet plas, which sice the chages i the EU Commo Agricultural Policy the govermet, i their wisdom, has combied with the agricultural schemes. 21 NGH.
