3 FROM THE VICAR Dear Frieds, Usug Heroes As you may kow, I am Vicar (Priest i charge), of three parishes, amely Great Gaddesde, Little Gaddesde ad Nettlede. Three completely separate parishes, three uique settigs ad all to be miistered to, which icludes havig services o Sudays Who ad what are Readers? They are lay people (ot Ordaied), ad Liceced by the Bishop, after rigorous traiig i subjects such as: theology, church history, liturgy, preachig ad much else. All of this traiig which lasts about three years, is carried out i their spare time ad oce i miistry, they are upaid. Without their ivaluable work, our local churches would be i a very poor state. They take services, they preach, they lead bible study groups, prayer groups ad help with childre ad youg people s work.; they ca also take fuerals. The differece betwee a Reader ad Priest is that the Priest ca preside at the Eucharist (or Holy Commuio), Baptise (or Christe), give God s absolutio for si, proouce God s blessig o the people, ad take weddigs amogst other thigs. So this moth, I would like to thak all our Readers ad pay tribute for all the work they do some of their ames will be familiar, some maybe ot so, but Gill Moore, Athoy Archer, Joh Malcolm, Heather Tisbury ad Richard Hackworth are all very much part of the team workig for God s Kigdom i our three parishes, they give of their time ad their God give gifts ad I thak them o behalf of us all. Whe traiig for priesthood i the Church of Eglad, at theological college, oe lears quite a lot about miistry, but oe thig they could t teach us was how to be i two places at oce The reality is of course, you ca t be i two (or three) places at the same time, I am therefore, totally reliat o Readers especially o Sudays. 13 Gaddesde Estate News Farmig The oilseed rape, a variety called Extrovert was drilled orth of Gaddesde Row at Whitehouse ad Upperwood Farms the week before the August Bak Holiday, as usual. It established well ad has bee ejoyig the warm weather. The crop came uder attack from cabbage stem flea beetles immediately after platig, but it was strog eough to weather the storm. Cosequetly it has had o isecticides applied to it, which is excellet ews, ad very little crop has bee lost. This pest has bee very damagig to oilseed rape crops i recet years, particularly i the East of Eglad, ad so to get through the autum without havig to treat for it is a great relief. The witer wheat has ow all bee drilled, with two varieties, Graham, a Group 4 biscuit wheat aroud Hawbush Farm ad JB Diego, kow to be good as a 2d cereal, after the oats o the Gleisters Block overlookig Gade Valley ad the Highbush Block overlookig Water Ed. A dry September ad geerally kid coditios have meat that drillig (platig) has take place later tha i previous years. With little raifall, weed growth before platig has bee miimal. This is ot ecessarily a good thig, as the ideal sceario is to ecourage the weeds to grow, ad the kill them, prior to platig the crop. I the ed we took advatage of good coditios ad wet ahead to establish the wheat, havig waited a good legth of time ad leavig the weediest fields till last to eable a better kill. Leave it too late ad the wheat plats do ot have eough time to make use of the autum sushie, which leads to a yield pealty come harvest. Hedge cuttig has begu, but so far oly o the iteral sides of the fields due for drillig, whe access is possible. As I have metioed before, hedge cuttig is doe o a two or three year rotatio, amog other thigs to save the wild berries for the birds. Estate maagemet We have had three cottages vacat ad eedig refurbishmet. 20 The Park is ow let ad we welcome ew occupat. 54 Brides Camp is still available, though curretly viewig, ad the Golde Lodge eeds major refurbishmet before available to let. We cotiue the programme of istallig double glazed widows, as well as dealig with regular items such as boiler servicig, replacemet oil taks ad other maiteace. Grazig ad stables We welcome ew grazig occupats at Mill Hill ad Marsh Farms. Three paddocks have recetly bee feced with the ew fecig we used at Whitehouse last year, with galvaised steel posts ad electrified top wire. These posts are guarateed for 30 years, which is a sigificat improvemet over the legth of time that timber posts seem to last i our wet clay soil. It is iterestig to ote that some of the Victoria cast iro gate posts aroud the estate are still perfectly soud more tha a cetury later, so we hope the ivestmet i their moder equivalet will stad us i good stead for may years to come Horses The Estate Ride cotiues to be popular, eve through the very had goig this past summer. We are plaig a major survey of the jumps this witer ad cosequet repairs ad improvemet. The mothly Park & Rides this summer were much ejoyed ad we hope to ru these agai ext year. The Charity Ride at the ed of September was well atteded ad raised 2,000 for the Gaddesde Place Group of the Ridig for the Disabled. 13 pto

14 Woodlads Most of the trees we plated i Big Wood last witer, mostly Douglas Fir with a spriklig of Oak, thakfully survived the summer drought, though we still have some to replace from our small stock we grew from seed. This operatio is kow by foresters by the arcae expressio beatig up, which has o implicatio of violece I believe it to come from mediaeval Eglish. Deer have doe damage to the tree guards ad our maagemet of the populatio cotiues. Joh Massey May readers will remember Joh Massey who maaged the Home Farm from 1964 util 1989, who sadly died recetly. He udertook a major overhaul of the farm itroducig moder methods ad establishig the Oakegrove Herd of Pedigree British Friesia cows. He wo a Nuffield Scholarship which eabled him to travel to America ad Australia studyig aspects of agriculture. He also served o the Parish Coucil ad Dacorum Coucil.
