3 From the Vicar Dear Frieds You may be old eough to remember Bruce Forsyth i the Geeratio Game who at the ed of some mad task set for the cotestats would say, did't they do well!! Well, just maybe, he did't ivet the sayig! I Mark s Gospel, the family ad frieds of two sick people begged Jesus to heal them. They asked without realisig it, for a miracle ad that s what they got! These evets must have made a uforgettable impressio ot just o the families cocered, but people far ad wide... ad the commet was, did't he do well! Or, 'He has doe everythig well; he eve makes the deaf to hear ad the mute to speak.' (you ca read about it i Mark 7: 24-37). I his healig miracles, Jesus makes o distictio as to race, class, belief or culture, all his actios are to demostrate the love ad power of God somethig to bear i mid whe we look across Europe at the huge migrat crisis we are facig. Jesus reached out ot just to his ow people, but to those whom others despised Jesus, through what he said ad did, showed that eve outcasts were ivited ito heave; there is to be o discrimiatio amog those who followed him the or ow. So what about miracles today? We see sickess, sufferig ad heartbreakig situatios all aroud us amogst our eighbours ad frieds as well as i the world at large; should we be prayig for miracles? I cofess I do t I suppose I do t wat to be put God to the test, my faith does t t work like that. But perhaps I should? Perhaps my faith is lackig? The trouble is, if we do ask for a miracle, God does t always give us what we ask for, or aswer i the way we expect. Eve Jesus, i his greatest hour of eed recogised that as he prayed to his Father i heave i the Garde of Gethsemae, Father ot my will but yours be doe. The challege of course is to try discer God s will i a particular situatio, whether it is for a sigificat physical healig, or for the perso to receive ier peace ad spiritual stregth to face what lies ahead. Our expectatios may ot match those of God, why should they, we are ot God! I Jesus time much of what we take for grated, i terms of healig would have bee see as miraculous, but whe people are ill these days, we take it for grated that most will get better, through a combiatio of the right medicie, good doctors ad urses, the right attitude i the patiet, ad the lovig support of the family, frieds ad eighbours. So whe would a miracle be a miracle today? - To be a miracle, a healig surely does't have to break ay laws of sciece? The reality is that scietific laws are a provisioal descriptio of how God ormally behaves; that must be the case if we believe i God as Creator. But as Creator, God ca do whatever he wats? I our eyes, surely a miracle is whe somethig uexpected happes that appears to break all the rules as we uderstad them? As Christias, we should recogise that as a aswer to prayer. Whe the devil tempted Jesus to throw himself from the piacle of the Temple ad demad that God should miraculously save him from death, Jesus replied that expectig miracles o demad, to test whether God really does love you, is blasphemy. Of course that does't mea there s o poit i prayig, but if the aswer is o, or 'ot yet', we should ask ourselves some fudametal questios: Am I askig for what God wats to give? Our requests are ofte short-sighted, whereas God sees the big picture. Maybe he kows that what we are prayig for is't really good for us; or that somethig else will (cot P5) 3

5 prove better i the log ru?? Are my motives right? Is my prayer purely selfish? Maybe God will brig us up with a jolt by ot aswerig it! At least ot as we would like! Have I doe my part? If I m ot livig the sort of life God wats me to, it makes it much harder for him to aswer me as I m ot i tue with him. Is God testig my faith? Is he tryig to teach me patiece, or humility, or compassio? Have I give up o God too quickly? Sometimes he makes us wait, just so that we grow i faith. Fially, are other people gettig i the way? God gives everyoe the gift of free will. If the patiet, or a relative, or somebody else wo't co-operate, God ca't force them. Maybe he makes us wait to allow us time to chage? Lots to poder The America poet, Hele Steier Rice, wrote a poem called 'O the wigs of prayer', which, due to copyright. I ca t reproduce here, but it is worth a read. Ipray that "God's will be doe" i your life today ad always, ad may you feel His peace ad presece flood your heart like ever before. Iam yours i Christ, Joh. 7 Great Gaddesde Bellrigers - Sue Collyer We started September i great heart ad o Wedesday 9th September we used practice ight to celebrate the Quee s record of beig the logest reigig moarch with her 63 plus years o the throe. Whe we are rigig call chages, we start off rigig rouds ad frequetly progress through various 'chages' (where 2 bells swap places with each other) ad arrive at rigig a sequece called 'Quees'. The ormal sequece of bells i rouds is from the treble to the teor, ie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 6. The sequece i Quees is 1,3,5,2,4,6 ad it creates a harmoious melody. So o this ight, we rag a lot of 'Quees' durig the eveig ad eded up itedig to rig 63 sets of Quees before rigig the bells dow ad fially catchig them agai i 'Quees'. Ufortuately we got a bit overethusiastic ad we rag a few more tha iteded but the itetio was true ad the rigig was good! We the raised a glass with a toast to Her Majesty ad ejoyed a few cakes ad ibbles. As a tower we do ejoy cakes ad good food ad o the 6th September we had a cream tea evet to which we ivited all the rigers from eighbourig bads who help us out so geerously throughout the year. We were really lucky i choosig a suy afteroo ad a good time was had by all, Seasoal Pimms was druk, scrumptious scoes ad cakes were cosumed, ad may a bell rigig tale was told. We did ot rig for the service o Suday the 13th September. We were all uder the impressio that there would ot be a service that day so several of us had take advatage of the rare opportuity of a Suday off to make plas ad by the time we heard there would be a service after all, it was too late to rearrage so the bells remaied silet. This evet was followed by a difficult moth for us i that we had problems fidig sufficiet rigers for either Suday services or Wedesday practice ad the decisio had to be made that we would ot rig durig September. Tower captai Val was o holiday for 3 weeks ad other bad members also had holiday plas (ad some of us joied Val ad Reg o their boat we just ca't bear to be parted!). Arragemets were made that ay bad members who wished to do so could atted practices i Kigs Lagley whose tower captai is a experieced rigig teacher ad very happy to look after our ew rigers. So o the 16th September Ja ad I, alog with our very ew recruits Sally ad Molly, wet alog to Kigs Lagley ad rag their bells a very differet set of bells from our 6 heavy oes. They have 8 bells, the frot two of which are very light ad eed firm hadlig ad the Teor requires a perso of specific stature who ca rig the bell without bagig their head o the beam strategically placed ear the bell (ad cosiderately covered with carpet i case you do ideed head-butt it iadvertetly!!). It is great for us to rig o 8 bells istead of our usual 6 ad Kigs Lagley were most hospitable ad welcomig to us all. Other evets this moth icluded a District rigig meetig at Kigs Lagley o the 12th September; a outig to Oxford by the Hertfordshire Youth group, kow as Youg@Herts, also o the 12th September. I was ivited to joi this outig (though I ca o loger be cosidered youg by ayoe's defiitio) ad had a great day rigig i 7 towers i the city of Oxford. The iescapable disadvatage of a youth squad outig was that the veue for luch was MacDoalds!! - but it was a great day rigig several 10 bell towers i some woderful colleges ad churches ad rigig with youg people who represet the future of bell rigig. O to 19th September ad I am submittig this article to our editor kowig that there will be o rigig of the bells at Great Gaddesde util the 4th October. I feel really sad about that, but we are i the positio we are i. We have 4 experieced rigers - 2 of whom are o holiday, 2 more have frequet commitmets elsewhere ad rig whe they ca. That leaves Ja ad I who have isufficiet experiece to take charge of the tower. So the bells will remai silet this moth but will rig out agai joyfully i October. 7

19 Gaddesde Estate News Farmig Heigh Ho! Whe I wrote last moth we were fully expectig harvest to be doe ad dusted. The first crops were harvested i good time ad yielded well; the Oilseed Rape was harvested i July ad the millig wheat i the bar by 12th August. We the had to wait for a moth of cold ad wet weather, with the daylight hours shorteig (which meas that there are fewer harvestig hours i each day, because the dew prevets early starts ad late fiishes), to cut our feed wheat. With very low prices, we are grateful that the yields have bee good ad partially compesated for this, ideed the feed wheat averaged over 11 toes per hectare (over 4 ½ t/acre). reversible plough). I the farm yard we have bee workig o the costructio of a ew sprayer wash-dow area to comply with curret regulatios. This project is ow o course, havig bee delayed by the wet weather. The ext seasoal project, apart from drillig ad urturig the witer crops will be hedgecuttig i accordace with our HLS stewardship scheme. The chage of DEFRA rules prevetig hedge-cuttig util 1st September. This has meat that both autum cultivatios ad wet groud coditios may well preclude us from beig able to complete the year s programme. However. the weather tured agai before we were able to harvest the field beas. What had bee a very promisig crop has lost its quality ad is likely o loger to be sold for huma cosumptio. At the time of writig we are prayig for good weather so that the beas ca be harvested soo ad we ca get o with drillig. Oe of the problems of a late harvest is that there is a kock-o effect o the sowig of the followig year s crop, ad ormally we like to have the wheat seed i the groud i September or early October. We were delighted that Mick Matthews was very successful i the Redbour Ploughig Match i September, held at Wheathampstead.
