3 FROM THE VICAR Dear Frieds, I read this the other day ad thought it was so edifyig(!) I thought I d share it with you. A Mr. Kevi Carlyo, who calls himself the High Priest of the coveat of Earth Magic, used to be i the papers a lot udoubtedly because some of his bizarre exploits. O oe occasio he exorcised a Ford Capri i Eastboure because it had the registratio umber ARK 666Y. As Kevi explaied to the Eastboure Gazette, The mark of the beast is 666, ad without our expert help there could have bee a few problems. It is a asty, evil little piece of work but we feel we have made it safe ow. (Was he talkig about the car or the registratio plate? Sorry all you Capri owers!). The ower of the said Capri was't so worried about the car beig demoic, I m ot really coviced by it at all but the car's goig i for its MOT soo so we shall see. We are 100% serious i what we do, said Mr. Carlyo. There are o devils or demos ivolved, we are ormal people. I thik it commo kowledge I m a bit of a car fa but I have ever bee tempted to have ay car I ve owed exorcised though some have bee the source of trouble. May members of the clergy are fasciated by trasport of oe sort or aother, both public ad private. Oe priest who miistered to a very coservative cogregatio, said he loved trais, because they were the oly thigs that moved i his parish without him havig to push them! Aother retired priest who loved to travel log distaces o a successio of local buses, called his autobiography Keep me Travellig, takig the words from the 3 hym by Sydey Carter, Oe more step alog the world I go. He wrote that the trais ad buses owadays were very differet from whe he was youg. The they were owed by the state or the local authority ad ru for the beefit of the commuity, ow they re bee privatized ad their oly aim is to make moey. He also icluded Christiaity i the otio of privitisatio, arguig that up util the 1950 s everybody pretty much accepted that we were a Christia coutry ad everybody was expected to behave i a Christia way ad most people, churchgoers or ot, would call themselves Christia. Suday was a day of rest ad people still had some sort of cosciece. Apparetly, those ot kee o the church thought church-goers were arrow-mided ad judgmetal ad that the Bible was full of historical stories which sciece had proved to be utrue ad that it was based o atiquated customs ad oly a few old fuddy-duddies atteded! Is that still true today? I hope ot, certaily ot aroud here. We are cotiuig to try to istill that sese of Jesus Christ ad His Gospel beig for all people, o more so tha at this approachig seaso of Christmas. All the tisel ad wrappig paper, the food the drik ad the trappigs ad trimmigs which we all ejoy, will ot compesate for the fudametally importat thigs, such as love, family ad frieds, sickess ad health, life, death ad loss. Also, we caot retur to some golde age past, because it probably ever existed, so tryig to put the clock back just wo t work. Istead we should be uderpiig everythig we do with the message of the Gospel, cocetratig o buildig the kigdom of God 'o earth, as it is i heave' ad relyig o the fruits of the Holy

5 Spirit: love, joy, peace, patiece, kidess, goodess, faithfuless, getleess, ad self-cotrol. God is costatly o the move, ot static or immoveable ad we must chage too, i order to keep up with our Creator. Treasurig the thigs that God has taught us i the past, we must be ready to lear ad grow, to uderstad the uchagig Gospel i ew ad deeper ways ad to express it i words ad actios which will speak to all people here ad ow. Oe more step alog the road I go, Oe more step alog the world I go. From the old thigs to the ew Keep me travellig alog with you. 7 Great Gaddesde Bellrigers - Sue Collyer We Sice writig last moth s colum we have all witessed some very movig ad poigat remiders of the sacrifices paid by so may serviceme ad wome i the last 100 years. At Great Gaddesde we rag with the bells halfmuffled for the remembrace service, ad later i the day at we took the muffles off ad rag with the bells ope to mark the sigig of the armistice at the ed of the First World War ad to celebrate the arrival of peace at last. It was the itetio of the Cetral Coucil of Church Bell Rigers to hoour the 1,400 rigers from across the UK who died durig the First World War by attemptig to recruit a similar 1,400 ew bell rigers i their memory. I the evet a total of 2,792 rigers were recruited very early double the origial target. May ew rigig bads were formed i towers where rigig had ot happeed for years or eve decades. Other recruits joied existig bads, swellig dwidlig umbers ad makig those bads viable ito the future. A great tribute to the memories of those past rigers who died i the carage of WW1. November is traditioally the moth whe the Wester District holds its Aual Quarter Peal weeked, whe ay district riger is welcome to attempt to rig a Quarter Peal. A quarter peal o 8 bells typically cosists of 1,250 chages ad takes aroud 45 miutes to rig. The rigers do t have ay music i frot of them each riger memorises a set of rules ad patters which dictate how the bells should be rug. So whe, for example, the coductor starts off the quarter peal by sayig Go Bob Mior, the 6 rigers kow how to rig all the relevat otes without ay further iformatio. The coductor s job is to make sure he or she makes the calls (which idicate a slight chage to the patter) are made i the right place. Quarter Peals require a great deal of cocetratio from everyoe experts ad begiers alike ad it is a great credit to our Wester District rigers that of the 21 attempts, 16 were successful,- 10 o 6 bells ad 6 o 8 bells. I all 38 people took part, so several people were ivolved i more tha oe attempt, ad I spoke to oe fellow riger from aother tower who rag i 6 attempts over the weeked! Novices beefit greatly from the geerosity of more experieced rigers i providig a experieced ad steady framework withi which the begier ca fid their way. Two successful quarter peal attempts were made at Great Gaddesde. The first of 1440 chages was Surprise Mior i 2 methods i which Val Mills rag ad which was rug to celebrate the completio of the ew kitche i the church. The secod was 1260 chages of Bob Doubles. We also eed to cogratulate Sally who has take o the challege of rigig the teor our heaviest bell at 10 cwt. She is rigig it really well, keepig a steady rhythm which is ofte the very importat job of the teor. Well doe Sally!! All it remais for me to do is to sed you good wishes for the comig Christmas seaso from all of us i the tower. Keep well, wrap up warm ad be kid to yourselves! 7

15 Gaddesde Estate News Farmig The witer crops have ow bee put to bed. The oilseed rape orth of Gaddesde Row is lookig strog ad hopefully will go through the witer able to survive the depredatios of wood pigeos. Both varieties of wheat were drilled i good coditios ad they too look happy. Our groud cover crop of mixed cereals ad clover i the field we call Log Robis, or just Robis, will probably go towards our Ecological focus Area, or EFA, which we are required to provide every year. This is ormally oe of the most productive fields as o the farm, as it is close to the Home Farm steadig ad for may geeratios, whe we had cattle, always received copious quatities of FYM (farmyard maure, otherwise muck!). We aim to sell, if ot move all the remaider of the output from the 2018 harvest by Christmas. As I metioed last moth, the sprig oats suffered from the weather coditios i the sprig ad summer; they yielded poorly ad had a very low bushel weight. By passig the oats through our old pre-cleaer, with its reciprocatig sieves, strug o flexible battes of ash wood, with its strog fa to remove dust ad shrivelled grai, we hope to be able to gai a premium price, so figers crossed! Old Grai Store ad Farmyard The old grai store at the Home Farm was built, I believe, i It has ot bee used sice the year 2000, ad the iteral structures of elevators, coveyors, dresser, walkways ad gatries, as well as the grai receptio pit had become usafe. Over the past few weeks we have bee removig the redudat equipmet ad structure ad fillig the pits ad elevator sumps with hardcore, ready for cocretig. We have take dow the old Rolled Barley Hopper, datig from the time of the Barley Beef uit, as well as the fial redudat oil tak. This grai hadig system featured i the 1977 BBC film Harvest at Great Gaddesde. High Park Wood Over the past few years may people will have read about the ash tree disease kow as Chalara or ash dieback. Oe of the side effects is that the braches of mature trees lose the elasticity for which ash is reowed. This ca mea that braches ca break off. High Park Wood has cosiderable public access via the footpaths, so we are plaig to go ahead with fellig the older ash, probably i the early part of ext year. We were grated a Fellig Licece for this work by the Forestry Commissio uder our te year maagemet pla i Puddigstoes Most people will kow that Great Gaddesde is a prime area for Hertfordshire Puddigstoes, ideed there are some very large oes visible i the foudatios of the church ad i the churchyard. This coglomerate was formed i a earlier period of global warmig, whe the weathered pebbles from seaside beaches became cemeted bur a silica matrix ito a atural form of cocrete. Puddigstoe is pricipally foud i Hertfordshire ad the adjoiig couties, ad Normady, although I have see some rather dull examples i the Arold Arboretum i Bosto Massachusetts. It is a very hard material ad well suited to the productio of quers, had cor mills. Recet research has located several Roma or pre-roma quarries for puddigstoe ad productio areas for quers i the parish. 15 pto

16 River improvemets Affiity Water, o behalf of the Eviromet Agecy, are udertakig a project to restore chalk streams, a very importat habitat, i Hertfordshire, icludig the River Gade. They have already completed work i Gadebridge Park. The basis of the work proposed here is to by-pass the sluice at Noke Mill to allow fish to swim upstream, probably icludig work to the bridge o Noke Mill Lae; removig some of the weirs betwee the lower bridge o the Leighto Buzzard Road ad re-gradig the Broad Water betwee the two Water Ed Bridges to retur it to a chalk stream with eough flow to esure clea gravel bed. Happy Christmas to oe ad all from those of us o the Gaddesde Estate! NGH Great Gaddesde Church 100 Club Cogratulatios to our November wier Mrs J Potto (Alice), Ticket o

22 Great Gaddesde CofE (VA) School For pupils aged 3-11 Courage & Peace Our mothly value for November was Courage followed by the value of Peace i December. These are values that are easily attributed to those who have fought ad those who have falle i the two World Wars, so that we ad our Childre ca live i relative Peace. Throughout the start of November, throughout the school we have bee rememberig the 100th Aiversary of the ed of the first World War. Year 1 & 2 imagied the challeges faced by soldiers i the treches, Years 3 & 4 worked o Art activities ad discovered war-time sogs, whilst years 5 & 6 composed some beautiful prayers. O Friday the 9th November, school started with Collective worship at the War Memorial presided by Revered Joh Russell. This was followed by Mr McCarthy from the Royal British Legio visitig the school to talk about life 100 years ago. Sigig The School also played host to the Gaddesde Sigig Festival. It was lovely to have the three Gaddesde village schools icludig Little Gaddesde ad Gaddesde Row, comig together for such a joyful evet. We hope that this may become a aual evet. Our school has also bee ivited to joi the Aeolia Sigers to perform at St. Joh s Church i Boxmoor o the 8th of December. Yoga Childre i Ifat classes have started yoga sessios research has show that as well as relaxatio, beefits for childre iclude a icrease i cofidece as well as improvig cocetratio. Thak yous O behalf of the Board of Goverors, I would like to thak our fabulous Frieds of Great Gaddesde School (FoGGs) committee who work tirelessly to fudraise for the school ad for the beefit of our childre both from our commuity, as well as corporate sposors. I would also like to thak Tesco, who i their six Hemel Hempstead stores have icluded Great Gaddesde School i their Bags of Help grat scheme for November ad December. Withi every shop, Tesco give customers a toke for them to place i oe of the three appeals held at that time. The appeal that gets most tokes receives the largest doatio from Tesco so if Tesco is your store your toke will make a differece! It is also opportue to say a thak you to Miss Ayres our EYFS teacher for her years of service to the yougest i our school, as she leaves us at the ed of the year to go travellig. We wish her all our very best wishes ad safe travels! As the Festive seaso approaches Excitemet fills the air i the classrooms as we reach this part of the year.
