3 From the Vicar Dear Frieds No doubt we are all baskig i the reflected glory of the marvellous performace of our Olympic athletes i Rio what a fabulous result ad we cogratulate them all - but I happeed to tur over to Chael 4 ews the other eveig ad saw a stark remider of life for may, carryig o i its terrible way, almost uoticed. The ihuma cosequeces of religious, clerical fudametalism, (with which our world is apparetly overwhelmed), was ever more graphically portrayed, as I watched evets of a 24 hour period ufold i the remais of the city of Aleppo, Syria. If you thik this sort of religious fudametalism is a ew pheomeo, thik agai; it ca be traced back through history ad the results are always disastrous, Christia, Jew or Moslem, it does t matter which religio the perpetrator faaticism of this ature, might ot eve have religio attached to it. Oe thig is for sure; it has othig to do with God. Of course we eed rules, to guide ad regulate, to esure good order ad moderatio i our lives, ad that s fie util those rules become a ed i themselves, rather tha a meas to a ed. How may rules ca you thik of that have o elemet of grey about them? I other words, ca you thik of ay law where there might ot be some justificatio or other, for someoe i certai circumstaces, to break it? If you follow the Archers o Radio 4, you will kow there s a o-goig story about Hele ee Archer ad her evil, cotrollig husbad, Rob. Hele has stabbed Rob uder extreme provocatio ad ow fids herself o the wrog side of the law. She has doe wrog, but I doubt may people kowig the story would feel there was t some justificatio i her actio. Ica thik of oly oe occasio i the bible whe Jesus talked about a uforgiveable si : people will be forgive for every si ad blasphemy, but blasphemy agaist the Spirit will ot be forgive. Whoever speaks a word agaist the So of Ma (Jesus), will be forgive, but whoever speaks agaist the Holy Spirit will ot be forgive, either i this age or i the age to come. Matthew 12: Jesus brought a message of salvatio, of forgiveess ad hope, which ultimately led to his sacrificial death o the cross ad he showed i his ow life, compassio ad love to the worst of people. So what is this uforgiveable si, this blasphemy agaist the Holy Spirit? I his life, Jesus faced a similar sort of religious fudametalism that we kow today ad his words from Matthew s Gospel, are directed at just such a group of faatics. At the core of this uforgiveable si, is the greater belief i self tha i God purportig to kow the mid of God ad the refusal to follow the promptigs of the Holy Spirit. It maifests itself i cruelty, hard heartedess ad apathy, expressed i the refusal to believe. What does it require of us? To be vigilat, to stad up for what we kow i our hearts to be right for it is i our hearts, where the Holy Spirit is at work ad above all, ot to stad back ad let apathy rule, for there leads the road to disaster. Iam yours i Christ, Joh. 3 Joh Russell St Joh s Vicarage Pipers Hill, Great Gaddesde HP1 3BY joh_russell@live.co.uk tel:

7 Great Gaddesde Bellrigers - Sue Collyer The su is shiig, the harvests are beig gathered, the hedgerows are covered with ripeig blackberries ad it is time to begi settlig back ito routie after our various summer holidays, stay-catios ad frivolities or perhaps law-mowig, weedig, waterig ad pruig! Ihave just oe sad evet to recall durig the summer, which is that o Wedesday the 13th July we rag with the bells half-muffled o our practice ight as a mark of respect followig the death of Peter Boyce, the father of Kare, Joh Russell s wife. Our best wishes ad codoleces are exteded to all Peter s family ad frieds. As always durig the summer, our bad has see a lot of comig ad goig - of catchig up ad movig o, as rigers ad visitors fit rigig commitmets aroud work, family ad leisure activities. We all have these ad rigig is o differet to ay other walk of life as busy people costatly juggle their various priorities to achieve a good eough work/life/ leisure balace. Oe advatage for us is that we have a place to retreat to We ca go to the tower - where o-oe from out there ca cotact us (mobile phoes are defiitely switched off i the tower). Ad i the tower we are away from all those outside pressures ad have to cocetrate all our attetio o the task i had to rig as well as we ca whatever it is we ca rig. Whe I am rigig a method I ca t allow a sigle thought from outside ito my head. I have to use all my brai power (such as it is) to co-ordiate my eyes (to see the other bell ropes movig up ad dow), my ears (to hear the soud of my bell i amogst the other bells), my hads ad arms (to pull the rope at the right stregth at the required time) ad my memory (to remember whe I should icrease or decrease my speed of rigig to chage my positio accordig to a remembered or kow patter). Bell-rigig is all cosumig ad as such provides a total escape from the ormal frustratios, limitatios ad frustratios of daily livig but it adds aother series of exactly the same tesios!! Ithought you may be iterested to kow what you may hear if you were to veture ito our tower (ad you would be very welcome to joi us particularly o a first Wedesday of the moth!). The rigig master (Val i our case) decides what is to be rug ext ad aouces this ad will ask various members of the bad to rig o differet bells. Val will also appoit a coductor who will be i charge of this particular piece of rigig. S o, let s assume we are goig to rig Bob Mior. The perso rigig the treble will call the bad to order by sayig loudly LOOK TO. This idicates to the bad that they eed to be payig attetio ad ready to go. The treble riger will the check that all the bad have ideed paid attetio ad she/he will the say: TRE- BLE S GOING. At this poit the riger pulls the treble bell a short way up off the stay o which it rests ad up to the balace to the very top of its swig ad holds it there. All the other rigers respod by pullig their bells up to the balace as well. The treble riger the says SHE S GONE ad pulls the treble bell off the balace ad begis to rig as ormal ad each of the other rigers i tur pulls their bell off the balace ad rigs i tur behid the treble. A few rouds will follow, whe the bells will rig i a sequece, allowig the bells to rig freely, to soud beautifully ad to allow the rigers to become familiar with the weight ad speed of the particular bell they are rigig. 7

8 Beautiful Kitches & Bathrooms OFFER FREE NEFF OR SIEMENS DISHWASHER WITH EVERY ORDER OVER 15,000 EST Call us today: Harpede: or Gaddesde Row: or visit 8

9 If a method is beig rug, the coductor will the say (for example) GO BOB MINOR ad each of the rigers kows the moves ad positio chages their bell eeds to make to create the patter kow as Bob Mior, which they ca the rig without ay further calls from the coductor for a matter of 8 or 10 miutes or so. By the, the patter will come back to where it started - ad beig folks who like a challege, doig the same thig is somethig to be avoided i chage rigig, so a BOB will be called, which will chage the positio of just 2 of the bells i the established patter of rigig. So the bad ca cotiue rigig for aother 8 miutes or so, whe aother BOB will create aother mior frisso, chage the route of a differet 2 bells ad allow aother 8 miutes of rigig ad so o. If you have exhausted all the computatios of BOBs, there s the possibility of throwig i the odd SINGLE which requires the rigers to jump through differet hoops i order to rig for a loger period of time without repeatig a sigle row of bells. Believe me it s all good fu ad eve better fu if we get it right! As I write this colum, it is the last ight of the Olympic games 2016 ad I am remided that some joker suggested that bellrigig should be icluded as a Olympic sport this year. I m ot sure I agree but I do kow that bell-rigig is a jolly good physical ad metal work out. It s a team game ad it s also a lot of fu. Ad you could do it too!! Do come ad joi us if you would like to have a go. You d get a grad welcome. SENIOR CITIZENS MEAL DEAL FB: Tel: Twitter: *T&C S APPLY 9

We warmly welcome our ew childre ad their families from the village ad further afield as we look ahead to the ext academic year. The ed of last term fiished with may of our traditioal school evets. Sports Day was quite evetful with lots of fu races to take part i for pupils. Races icluded sprit, the obstacle race, egg ad spoo, ad sack race. There was some fatastic racig from the childre, with perhaps some future Olympic ruers judgig by how fast some of them were! As goverors we were also privileged to watch a lovely performace of Oliver Twist by the juiors. Everyoe worked very hard learig sogs ad scripts ad their hard work all paid off as they were absolutely woderful! Over the summer holidays the school had some buildig work doe iterally to exted the years five/six ad oe/two classrooms. This buildig work will provide a better eviromet for our staff to teach i ad improve the learig of our pupils. We kow that the childre were excited to see what it looked like! As a school we promote "values-based" learig to promote a sese of commuity ad citizeship. Each moth we have a school value which childre focus o. These iclude qualities such as hoesty, courage, respect, determiatio ad compassio. Pupils omiate each other whe they see their peers displayig these qualities, ad staff also omiate childre. They are celebrated i our Thursday "celebratio assembly'" where oe child each week has their hadprit prited oto our values tree. We hold a weekly "church assembly" each Friday durig the term. Parets ad carers are welcome to joi us at these assemblies which are kidly hosted by either our Vicar or a Lay Reader of the church. 25 Gaddesde Estate News Haymakig As the September Newsletter follows two moths after the ed Jue some of the summer work, like haymakig, seems a log time ago. Stephe ad Dick Behr mowed the grasslad aroud the Golde Parsoage, baled ad wrapped it, the carted it ito storage for witer fodder. Harvest Harvest started at about the usual time for oilseed rape, but early for the millig wheat. Yields of wheat so far have bee good, but ot as high as last year. Quality has bee good. We are ow i the middle of cuttig the feed wheat ad have yet to do the barley, which we have ot grow for 16 years, or the beas. The combie fiished at 1am oe morig to get the crop i before the rai came! BBC Coutryfile We were approached by the BBC to appear o Coutryfile. They came i the middle of August ad filmed at the Home Farm ad elsewhere. We were iterviewed by the preseter Matt Baker. They object was to relate farmig today to the 1977 BBC film Harvest at Great Gaddesde which was preseted by the late Gordo Beigfield from Water Ed. The piece is expected to appear i Coutryfile o 4 th September. Autum drillig At the time of writig we have t begu to drill the witer oilseed rape, which is ormally sow aroud August Bak Holiday. There has bee a lot of reportig of the ba o eo-icatioid seed dressig o oilseed rape. This has bee used to combat the depredatios of cabbage-stem flea beetle, but some research blames it for damagig wild bee populatios. We suffered badly from the beetle this year so as a experimet this witer we will be tryig compaio croppig, platig berseem clover with the rape, i the hope that the beetles will eat the clover rather tha the rape. Woodlads I 1990 we plated some woodlad o arable lad uder the old Farm Woodlad Scheme. This is ow 26 years old ad was due for a first thiig. We udertook what is kow as a lie thiig of two of the blocks, fellig trees i every third row, though leavig the occasioal oak if it was especially good. The woods were plated 50% oak, 40% beech ad 10% wild cherry. The beech i particular have suffered from grey squirrel damage ad will ot make large timber. All the material extracted will go for firewood. We hope to fell some larger oak ad sweet chestut i the older woods ext sprig. Cricket Bat Willows May will have oticed that we harvested several of the Cricket Bat Willows alog the River Gade i August, which as their ame implies go to Essex as blaks for the productio of Cricket Bats. We first plated these trees i 1974 ad they are harvested regularly at about 16 years of age, as oe of the quickest ad most valuable timber crops. The groud where the mature trees have bee felled will be re-plated with fresh willow sets. Other work We begi hedge cuttig i September, followig the chage i govermet regulatios. We cut far fewer hedges, less ofte. This is maily because of the iability to cut i August, at harvest time ad there the becomes a time costrait, partly because of the weather, but also the fact that we do t 25

Ride The ride has had aother successful year, with a icreased umber of members ad, apart from oe wet Suday, a really excellet turout for the mothly Park ad Ride evets. We already have a lot of bookigs for the Charity Ride o 25 th September. This is i From Amaravati Buddhist Moastery Do t take your life persoally Do t take your life persoally is the title of a book of talks give by Ajah Sumedho, who fouded Amaravati Buddhist Moastery i 1984, ad lived here util It s a simple little setece but whe oe starts to reflect o its meaig it ca slip away. We are used to beig told Do t take it persoally that it raied o your birthday for istace, but really all we are sayig is that the cause of the rai was located elsewhere ad o-oe s ame was purposefully embedded i each drop. Ajah Sumedho ofte poited to what Buddhists call self-view, or ego-cetred thikig, whe he witessed it; freedom from such self-view is at the heart of the spiritual life as uderstood i the Buddhist path. We ca say what that freedom does ot mea. It does t mea ay of the followig (a) that you should treat your ow beig as a impersoal object, (b) that it s OK to be careless about life itself, or (c) that it s wrog to take thigs persoally. It s ot wrog per se, it s more aki to a mistake perceptio. aid of the Gaddesde Place Group Ridig for the Disabled Associatio ad the British Horse Society, at which we are also havig a Trade Fair, where The Frieds of Great Gaddesde Church are ruig a Pimms Bar ad tea ad coffee stall. NGH We create the sese of self with the help of the outside world which is always givig us messages about who we are ad what opiio of ourselves we should have, whether that is good, bad or idifferet. Parets go to great legths to help childre kow who they are ad throughout life we udertake various quests ad advetures to give shape to our potetial ad values. It is exactly because we create the sese of self that attachmet to it ca be trasceded we ca stop creatig it. Beig free from self-, or ego-cetred views, is to dwell i a trascedet absece. Whe we are attached to self-view, every momet, every experiece is assessed by us through the filter of who we thik we are ad what is advatageous to maitaiig that perspective. It s a view that seeks persoal gai, ad is therefore based o fear of loss. Meditatio might help us see the microcosm momet-by-momet, but it s easier to spot the all-ecompassig type of Disgusted of Great Gaddesde reactios arisig whe such self-view gets ruffled. Whe we are free from self-view, each momet is ituitively kow i the wholeess of what is here. Nothig added, othig take away. No filters. 27
