3 From the Vicar Dear Frieds By the time you will be readig this, the feast of Easter will be more or less over; evertheless, I do wish you all a very happy, joyous ad peaceful Eastertide. Without wishig to soud too pious, I thik it s a real pity that the media - which ievitably drives much of our thikig ad our lives i geeral - is ot very good at ackowledgig Let ad Holy Week. For example, I oticed, (well, you could t really ot; it stopped me i my tracks!), the ASDA advert prior to Easter, featurig a eormous chocolate chicke, which terrified bystaders as it lumbered about, fially squattig o the roof of a ASDA store. It the proceeded to lay eggs (chocolate of course) dow the chimey! Where was Jesus i all that, I woder? Similarly, I asked a child the other day, what happeed at Easter? Aswer, the Easter buy came! It probably was t helped by the fact some of the childre recogised yours truly i a Easter Buy outfit, (but that s aother story!). Jokig aside, Christias geerally have a go at givig somethig up, or doig somethig extra at the start of Let, we kow that it s the seaso i which we should DO somethig. We kow it s the precursor to Holy Week ad Easter ad that it s a good time to reflect ad prepare but, it s a bit like the start of a New Year, whe we begi with lots of good itetios, however, do we take stock ad ask ourselves what s happeig three or four weeks dow the lie, are we still perseverig? Ievitably, we are all i dager of losig that early zeal ad we sometimes fail to focus o the forthcomig evets for which we are supposed to be preparig the Last Supper, the trial of Jesus ad his death o the cross. Celebratig Easter seems to me to be a bit empty if we have t first, at least o some level, etered ito the evets ad ideed the horror leadig to it. Like our Easter eggs, it will have a hollow feelig. Jesus said this to his disciples just before his arrest: Very truly, I tell you, you will weep ad mour, but the world will rejoice; you will have pai, but your pai will tur ito joy. (Joh 16:20). I takig that message to heart; if we are to truly eter ito the joy ad the freedom of Easter, first we eed to suffer a little pai. We are ow post Easter Day, but the examiatio of our relatioship with God should though, be a o-goig part of our lives, ot just cofied to oe six week slot each year; ever more so tha i the world which looks o Christiaity as ufathomable, but adopts our most importat festivals ad the etirely misses the poit of their existece. Ikow I soud like a grumpy old ma, (well, I probably am!), but I am yours i Christ, Joh. 3 Joh Russell St Joh s Vicarage Pipers Hill, Great Gaddesde HP1 3BY joh_russell@live.co.uk tel:

7 Great Gaddesde Bellrigers - Sue Collyer Goodess how quickly the year is rushig o! Easter is ow behid us, seemigly too soo due to its early occurrece i the caledar this year. Three of our regular rigers took advatage of the early break to jourey abroad oe to Frace, oe to Derbyshire ad aother to Australia, ad our usual supporters from other towers were uable to help us out as their Easter services were at the same time as ours, so we were very short of rigers for Easter Suday. This resulted i two of our ewest rigers, Dee ad Sally, havig to rig solo for the service, without the usual mider stadig with them. Rigig solo is a importat milestoe it s a bit like the first time you take your armbads off whe you are learig to swim. You kow you are o your ow! Both Sally ad Dee rag really well ad we are all very proud of them ad Val said it made her Easter! O the 26th February a Quarter Peal was rug as a complimet to the vicar Joh Russell to mark his 60th birthday. The bad comprised Val Mills, Caroly Crawley, Deirdre Watso, David Burbage, Chris Hoare ad David Gamblig chages of Surprise Mior were rug of Norwich ad 576 of Cambridge ad it took 47 miutes. The vicar was i New York at the time! Very sadly, this moth we received the ews of Joh Wood s death ad, as a mark of respect, we rag for practice ight with the bells half muffled o 16th March. May of you will remember that Joh was Chair of Goverors at Great Gaddesde School as well as beig a past High Sheriff ad Deputy Lieuteat for Hertfordshire. Joh s wife Soia died oly shortly before Christmas ad our heartfelt feeligs go out to their family ad frieds. We will be rigig the bells for Joh s fueral o 8th April. Later i the moth o 23rd April, we will be rigig for St George s Day. This is a follow-o from the Rigig for Eglad campaig last year whe we ecouraged people to come ad have a go. This year the campaig is ruig a atiowide Rollig Rigig competitio to get as may towers as possible withi a give area to rig oe after the other. So i our Wester District, the rigig will begi i Trig at 9am, will be take up 15 miutes later i Aldbury, the o to Northchurch, Berkhamsted, Little Gaddesde, Apsley, Kigs Lagley, the Sarratt, followed by Hemel Hempstead ad evetually reachig us i Great Gaddesde by 11.15, carryig o to Redbour ad fiishig with Flamstead rigig at Phew!! Local Police Sergeat s message Hopefully, most of our frosty morigs are behid us, however there is a issue that usually rears its head durig periods of cold weather ad that is of cars beig stole while their owers are de-icig them. While a umber of these offeces have occurred across the district recetly, oe have occurred i your parish ad I, as I am sure you, would like to see it remai that way. The problem occurs as may motorists will leave their egie ruig while they scrape their widows clear ad some owers will eve retur to their homes while their car is warmig up. Sadly, for opportuist thieves this provides a easy opportuity to take your car so I would like to remid residets to be careful ot to make themselves vulerable i this way ad ot leave the keys i the igitio while de-icig their car. (remember this ca ivalidate your isurace - ed.) If you have ay cocers about crime or ati-social behaviour please cotact PCSO Rowe Sheppard o 101 or by rowe.sheppard@herts.p.police.uk. 14 Proposed Chages to Public Rights of Way i the Parish of Great Gaddesde Our beautiful parish is set i the Chilters Area of Outstadig Natural Beauty (AONB) with a extesive etwork of bridleways ad footpaths for all to ejoy the delightful surroudigs. Hertfordshire Couty Coucil have issued a order that Great Gaddesde Bridleway o 37 ad Great Gaddesde Footpath o 35be ope to all traffic; this is a serious threat to the traquility of the area. A ew byway ope to all traffic betwee footpaths o 35 ad 39 goig across ope coutry is also proposed. The defiitio ope to all traffic icludes use by motor cyclists ad all-purpose terrai vehicles ad gives them the right of access alog these footpaths ad bridleways. This chage would mea that walkers ad horse riders would be sharig their right of way with these vehicles creatig dager for walkers, riders, childre ad dogs. Besides causig damage to plats ad aimals, the track surface would become deeply rutted ad i witer, possibly impassable to walkers ad riders. I such quiet areas, there would be a icrease i oise ad air pollutio. O behalf of Great Gaddese Parish Coucil, I strogly urge the parishioers to register their protest at this outrageous attack o our parish ad its quality of life.
