2 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 3 THE DANGER OF BECOMING WATERED-DOWN CHRISTIANS Vatican City, 1 September 2014 (VIS) At midday the Holy Father appeared at the window of his study to pray the Angelus with the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, and commented on the day's Gospel reading in which Jesus, after having confirmed that Peter and the other eleven believed in Him as the Messiah and the Son of God, began to explain to them that He had to go to Jerusalem where He would suffer greatly, be killed, and rise again on the third day. He remarked, It is a critical moment in which Jesus' and the disciples' method of thinking emerges. Jesus reproaches Peter He puts him back in line because he does not think as God does, but as human beings do, and without realising that he is assuming the role of Satan, the tempter. The Apostle Paul also insists upon this theme in this Sunday's liturgy in his Letter to the Romans, when he affirms that Christians must not conform to this world without transforming it to discern the will of God. In effect, he continued, we Christians live in the world, fully integrated in the social and cultural reality of our time, and it is right that it is so; however, this carries the risk that we become 'worldly', that the salt loses its flavour, as Jesus would say; that is, that the Christian is 'watered down', losing the inspiration of newness that comes from the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Instead, they should be the opposite: when the strength of the Gospel remains alive in Christians, they can transform mankind s criteria of judgement, determining values, points of interest, lines of thought, sources of inspiration and models of life, emphasised the Pope, quoting Paul VI. It is sad to meet Christians who are watered down, like wine; you cannot tell whether they are Christians or worldly, like watered wine; it is impossible to tell whether it is wine or water. It is sad to meet Christians who are no longer the salt of the earth because they have committed themselves to the spirit of this world, that is, they have become worldly. Therefore, it is necessary to renew oneself continuously, to draw lymph from the Gospel by reading and meditating the Gospel every day, so the word of Jesus may always be present in our life, emphasised the Pontiff, reminding those present always to carry a copy of the Gospel with their pockets or handbags, and to read a passage every day. Renewal also comes from participation in Sunday Mass, where we find the Lord in the community, listening to His Word and receiving the Eucharist which unites us to Him and one another, as well as in days of retreat and spiritual exercises. He concluded, Thanks to these gifts from the Lord, we can conform not to the world, but to Christ, and to follow Him on His path, the path of 'losing one s own life' in order to find it. offering it for love and in love and this involves sacrifice, even unto the cross to receive it again purified, freed of selfishness and from the debt of death, full of eternity.

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 1,160. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. 9 Page 10 Sunday, September 14, 2014 *The Respect Life Committee will hold a Voter Registration drive in the vestibule after all the masses this weekend. Voter Registration applications, as well as applications for an absentee ballot for the November election, will be available. * 40 Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history, helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortion. 40 Days for Life will be held September 24 through November 2. The peaceful vigil will remind thousands of motorists (who will view our signs during the 40 days of witness) and those passing on foot that babies lose their lives inside the Planned Parenthood Building at 540 Fulton Ave. (Rt. 24) in Hempstead where abortions are performed. The vigil will be held daily from 7am to 7pm on the sidewalk in front of 540 Fulton Ave. Please call OLL Respect Life representative Regina Carbonaro at if you are interested in participating in this vital event. *The OLL Respect Life Committee is looking for new members! Please call Regina Carbonaro at for more information. Volunteers are always welcome to help at our table after Masses. (Voter Registration Drive Sept 13/14, Respect Life Sunday Oct 4/5, Baby Shower to benefit Birthright Dec 6/7) ************************************* ALS and the Ice Bucket Challenge Dr. David Prentice, Senior Fellow for Life Sciences at Family Research Council (FRC), commented on the popular ice bucket challenge on his blog at the FRC on 8/21/14 ( He encouraged donors to select organizations that participate in "ethical, successful adult stem cell research...als (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a.k.a. 'Lou Gehrig's Disease') is a fatal, progressive neurological disease. It attacks the nerves that control voluntary muscles, so it is sometimes termed 'motor neuron disease'. As the nerves die, muscles weaken and atrophy, including the muscles for breathing; most people suffering from ALS die of respiratory failure. The cause is unknown and at this point there is no cure, and very little that can even slow disease progression. So, raising awareness about ALS and increasing support for ALS research is a good thing. "But whether you participate in a challenge or just donate to important research, where should your donation go? So far, most of the attention and millions of dollars in donation have gone to the ALS Association. However, the ALSA has admitted that it gives some of its money to embryonic stem cell research and has no qualms about doing so in the future...as Rebecca Taylor has pointed out, ALSA also has given money to an affiliate, NEALS, that has given money to a trial that uses stem cells derived from the spinal cord of an aborted fetus. That trial is being run by the University of Michigan and Emory University, and sponsored by a company called Neuralstem which uses aborted fetus cells for research ("from the donated spinal cord tissue of an 8-week-old aborted fetus.") All of the Neuralstem trials use cells derived from abortion. Project ALS, another charity for ALS research, also funds embryonic stem cell research. "But there are alternatives for donations that use only ethical stem cell sources! Here are a few of my favorites: The Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center (MSCTC) at the University of Kansas Medical center is only a year old, but is starting an increasing number of clinical trials and educational efforts. One potential future trial would be using adult stem cells for ALS. Dr. Rick Barohn, an internationally recognized expert on ALS, recently joined the Advisory Board for the Center. The MSCTC does not do any embryonic or aborted fetal stem cell research, only adult and non-embryonic stem cell research and trials." (Dr. Prentice is a member of the MSCTC advisory board.) (For more information go to Dr. Prentice notes that clinical trials are also underway at the Mayo Clinic for ALS patients using adult stem cells. Dr. Anthony Windebank is ready to begin a second clinical trial for ALS patients in association with an Israeli company, Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics. "While this is still an experimental trial, the early results using adult stem cells for ALS treatment have been positive." (For more information go to projects and click on Therapy for ALS) "The John Paul II Medical Research Institute in Iowa City is doing research in several areas, including ALS, and does not support embryonic stem cell research."
