Mission Statement The Catholic Community of St. Timothy serves the areas of Norwood, Walpole, Westwood, and all who come to our door. The serenity of our waterfront church property is a natural reminder of all the gifts that God has given us. It is our vision, as a Eucharistic people, to come to know and love Christ, to proclaim his teachings through word and deed, to worship together and to minister to one another. We strive to form a supportive and generous faith-filled community. We seek to bear witness to Christ's presence and compassion to all by our service to our sisters and brothers. Jesus himself, gives the mission to us. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)

2 December 10 ~ Second Sunday of Advent The prophet Isaiah instructs us: Prepare the way of the Lord. This is what Advent is about and yet, it can be difficult to keep this focus when we are pulled in too many directions by the shopping and cooking and card writing that go with the season. Don t allow the tasks to prevent you from finding time to prepare your heart for Christ. Begin each day this week by making a simple prayer, QUESTION OF THE WEEK Question for Children: What could you do so that others will see in you what it means to follow Jesus? Question for Adults: What do you need to change so that others can learn from watching you that Christ walks among us? TENTH annual Epiphany Celebration: Friday, January 5, 2018 Our 10th annual Epiphany Celebration will take place on Friday, January 5, Celebrate with us as we mark ten years of celebrating the Christmas season together as a parish! We still need people of all ages to be sheep, shepherds, angels, kings, camels, elephants, entourage followers, to name a few parts! We also need behind the scenes help! We need help making costumes and props, setting up and cleaning up, organizing materials and people. The next rehearsal is on December 17 th from 2:00-3:00 pm. Dress rehearsal is on Thursday, January 4 th from 5:30-6:30 pm. Sign-up sheets are available in the back of the Church, or us at CNCampion@yahoo.com. If you can help with making costumes please contact Bonnie at music@sttim.net. If you cannot make the next rehearsal, but would like to participate in the Epiphany, please contact Bonnie. This is a wonderful intergenerational parish-wide celebration. Come and be a part of the fun and make this year s celebration the best one yet!! Watch for Epiphany dinner sign-ups next week and further information about the evening! Christmas in the City! 35 students and 5 chaperones will depart on Saturday, December 16th, to help prepare the Boston Convention Center for Christmas in the City, Boston s biggest indoor winter wonderland to help homeless families celebrate Christmas with indoor rides and activities, a warm meal - and of course, presents! If you d enjoy helping Boston s at risk youth with a donation, we are accepting new stuffed animals to bring with us for wrapping and distribution. Donations can be placed in the bins in the vestibule, by December 15th, 4 pm. Thank you! A Message from our Pastor On Friday, December 1, I was invited to Xaverian Brothers High School to celebrate Mass for their annual remembrance of Founders Day. It is a day when they recall the memory of Saint Francis Xavier, the spiritual inspiration for the Xaverian Brothers, whose feast is December 3 and Theodore Ryken, the Belgian shoemaker who is their founder. Having had the opportunity to get to know the Malden Catholic and Saint John s Prep communities from previous assignments, I was delighted to be invited to XBHS. What I have found most inspiring is the spirituality of Theodore Ryken. One of the tenets that is found in the Constitution of the Xaverian order is the call of the brothers to live ordinary lives that give witness to God s unconditional love and to do it in a way that can adapt to a changing world and church. As I said to the Xaverian community, we all live very simple, ordinary lives. And as Christians we must find God in the mundane moments of everyday life and we must give witness to others in those simple, ordinary events. That is the spirit of Theodore Ryken and what he expected from his followers. It is what the brothers try to exemplify to their students and what they hope their students will do for each other. I think that insight from Theodore Ryken is a good one for us as we consider what we can do to further the New Evangelization at Saint Timothy in a changing church and world. Inspiring others to return to the practice of their faith will not first come from programs or fancy advertising. It will come from the personal witness of Christian living from people they know and share life with in neighborhoods, on the playing fields and in the marketplace. We need to feel comfortable speaking about our faith as the inspiration and guide for how we choose to live in the simple, ordinary, mundane moments of everyday life. If the young men at Xaverian Brothers High School can do it, then so should we. Giving Tree Fr. Petringa The Annual Giving Tree Project is underway. Make sure you sign up on your way out of Mass this weekend. The Giving Tree helps a variety of local schools and agencies including children and their families, adults with developmental needs and homeless men and women. To participate, please choose a name from the list that is posted on the wall in the gathering space at the entrance to the Church and write your name in the fulfilled by column. Then, write down the information on one of the gift tag slips available on the table. We request gifts and/or gift cards to be wrapped, except those going to Catholic Charities. When you return your gift, place it under the tree with the gift tag slip attached. Once you have put a gift under the tree, take a bow from the basket and place it on the tree. Gifts must be delivered to the Church no later than December 17th. Thank you!

Altar Server Angela Buckley Nevan Sujit NOT FILLED Maeve Burke Nate Hsu Ryan Hsu Joseph Greene Roisin O'Carroll Ferdia O'Carroll Colleen Fogarty Kyle Grosso Meghan Sullivan Evan McLellan Kate McLellan Erika Sabatino Getting through the Holidays after a Loss The holidays can be the hardest time of year when you are grieving a loss. The decorations and celebrations, which are supposed to make you feel festive, only remind you of your loss. In a season that emphasizes love and togetherness, you can somehow feel very sad and alone. Recognizing this and preparing for the challenge that these days present, will help you survive this new chapter in your life. The following are a few suggestions: Be with people you enjoy and find supportive. Talk to family members and good friends about past holiday rituals and how they will be different. Start a new tradition to honor and remember your loved one. Light a candle, tell stories, watch a home video or look through pictures of your loved one. By talking about your loved one, you allow others to also talk and grieve with you. Plan ahead and simplify preparations. Consider what is meaningful and comfortable and do only those things that you truly enjoy. Be willing to change your plans if they don t feel right. Accept help and kindness from others. If this is difficult for you, remember that by allowing others to help you, you are offering them the gift of giving. Allow yourself to feel joy. You are not betraying your loved one. Do something for someone else. Often this brings the most comfort to those grieving a loss. Take good care of yourself. Be sure to get enough sleep, eat well, drink in moderation, exercise and get some fresh air! Pray. Focus on the real meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Remind yourself that God is always by your side and you are never alone. Often the anticipation of the holiday is worse than the actual day itself. Allow yourself to enjoy what you can. Be gentle with yourself. Suggestions for Grieving Children Children who are grieving may also find the holiday season challenging. A critical factor in how children react to a death is the response of the caring adults in their lives. Likewise, the way adults cope during the holiday season will greatly influence the child s response to the holidays. Children love routine. Don t avoid long-standing traditions. Children often find comfort in them. Even if you can hardly bear the thought of putting up Christmas decorations, your children will probably be counting on them. They need to know that even though their loved one is gone, other facets of their life are still the same. Children imitate behavior. If they see you expressing sadness, they will know that it is okay for them to be sad too. Involve children in doing something to honor and remember the loved one. Like adults, they need to remember. More than anything else however, children need the continued presence of a stable, supportive adult who provides a constant assurance of love.

6 Faith Formation (continued) Together, we make a difference! Last Sunday a small group of parishioners journeyed to Evelyn House to make Christmas cookies with residents and play with the children there. We experienced a lot of waiting: waiting for the Day Director to arrive; waiting for residents to join us in the kitchen; waiting for cookies to cool. More importantly, we were reminded of all that the residents wait for (jobs, housing, new opportunities, reunions with estranged family members and friends ). In this waiting, we were reminded of all that God s people wait for and all the graces we have received. We were reminded of how important it is to put others first and to do our best to serve them. When we serve others, we learn so much about their realities and how much what we do personally and politically has an impact. What are you waiting for this Advent? What might you personally and/or politically do this Advent to help give birth to God s Kingdom? In Our Community Norwood Meals on Wheels Norwood Meals on Wheels need help packing and delivering meals to people in Norwood who are in need of extra help.
