Anyone interested in learning more about what it means to become a Catholic Christian, should contact the parish office. Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated at scheduled Liturgies. Parishioners who are expecting a child should contact the office at least two months in advance, or as soon as possible to make arrangements and meet with the Baptismal Preparation Team. Reconciliation Also known as penance or confession, the Sacrament of Penance is regularly available every Saturday at 3:30pm in the church. Individual appointments may also be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated communally during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Marriage Engaged parishioners who are interested in being married at St. Timothy Parish must contact one of the priests at least six months in advance. Call the office regarding Marriage Preparation classes. Sacrament of the Sick Praying for healing in body, mind and soul has always been a part of the Church s ministry to those who are ill. Anyone who is seriously ill or anticipating hospitalization, may celebrate the Sacrament on Saturdays following the 9am Mass, or upon request. Devotion/Prayer Groups Rosary is said Monday through Saturday prior to morning Mass. Guild of St. Timothy The Guild normally meets the first Tuesday of the month, Oct. -May. Rosary begins at 7:30pm (Church); Program at 8pm in the Church Hall. New Jerusalem Charismatic Prayer Group meets on Thursday from 7:30-9pm. All are welcome!

3 Religious Education Grades K 6 Grade 2 Mass and Parent Discussion On Sunday, October 24 our Grade 2 students will gather with their families to celebrate the 9:30 am Mass together. Following Mass, the parents of our Grade 2 students are encouraged to attend a presentation by Dr. Jane Regan of Boston College in the Ruocco Center. At the same time, the students will gather in the Hall for an hour of activities aimed at enriching their faith. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy MacKenzie in the Religious Ed. Office. Grade 6 Class Mass On Sunday, October 31 our Grade 6 students will honor God in a special way by participating more fully at the 9:30 am Mass. Please have your child arrive in the Church Hall at 9:00 am that morning for song practice. Following Mass, the Grade 6 students and their parents will spend an enriching hour during which the students will be involved in a special service project while parents participate in a talk and group discussion. Project Rachel Do you know someone who is carrying grief and sorrow over past abortions? Project Rachel is the post-abortion ministry of the Catholic Church to help those dealing with the pain of abortion. Project Rachel will offer a Come to the Waters healing retreat on Sat., Oct. 30 at a confidential location. For more information and to register, contact Project Rachel at PARISH NURSE NEWS Training for New Visitors to the Sick There will be 2 training sessions for people interested in becoming involved in visiting the sick and homebound of our parish. The sessions will be held on Monday, Oct. 25th from 10:00am- 11:30am, and on Wednesday, Oct. 27th from 7:00pm- 8:30pm. Both sessions will be held in one of the Ruocco classrooms. You only need to attend one of these sessions. If you plan on attending, please call the Parish Nurse Office and leave a message with your name and phone number, and which session you plan to attend. Bereavement Support Group There will be a new Bereavement Support Group beginning Monday, Nov. 1st from 11:00am- noon in Ruocco Rooms 3 and 4. The group, facilitated by Fr. Emerson and Betsy Rivard, will meet every Monday from Nov. 1st until Dec. 6th. For many people, participating in a support group lessens the feelings of isolation that result from a loss and provides comfort, reassurance and healing. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE On Saturday, November 6, 2010, at our 4:30pm Mass, we will be remembering those whose funeral services were held at St. Timothy s between October 1, 2009 and October 1, A reception will follow in our parish hall. Secretarial Position St. Mary of the Assumption parish in Dedham, a very large and active parish, seeks to hire a Parish Secretary to begin as soon as possible. 5 October 17, 2010 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear friends- Last week there was a three part series on Public Television on the role of religion in American life. From its beginnings religion has played a prominent role in the development of our nation. From the civil rights era to the role of religion in political life to the freeing of the slaves in the 1860 s, religion was a significant factor. A week or two prior to that series, the Pew forum on religion and public life published the results of a large study on the religious knowledge of Americans. The results of that survey were not encouraging a great number of contemporary Americans are woefully ignorant of many facets of their own religion, as well as other religions that are practiced in our country. Catholics, as a whole, did very poorly. One example was the fact that over 50% of Catholics did not know whether the Eucharist was the Body and Blood of Christ or was only symbolic. Atheists did better on the survey than many of those who profess religious beliefs. This is worrisome since today we face so many difficult decisions that are ethically and morally based. When I was growing up life was relatively defined some things in society were right and some were wrong the distinction was rather clear. In today s society, we struggle with so many issues that are controversial abortion; stem cell research; gay marriage, to name a few. Imagine the world of the future the world in which your children or grandchildren will inherit. How will they make their choices what will influence them what will be the guidelines that they will use to forge ahead in their lives? As religious knowledge wanes, will they make choices based just on what is popular or easy or feels right at the moment? I believe that each age has a responsibility to educate themselves about their faith; to live that faith; and to pass on that faith to another generation. Our time is now. I have three suggestions. We need to educate ourselves about our religion. There are many resources to assist with that. One that comes to mind is a great program out of Boston College called C21 on line. That program offers a varied menu of relevant courses that you can take by computer at your own pace. Practice your faith by attending Mass regularly and try to give others a good example by being proud of your faith and living it out in practical ways. Example is a powerful teacher. Parents need to make choices. More and more today I hear parents say that there is so much activity going on in their children s lives that Mass or religious education classes get squeezed out. The best gift and the most enduring gift we can give our children are good values and morals. We need to invest in them so that the faith we have received from others is a faith that we share with the next generation. Fr. Culloty
