CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL 2017 Our Parish Target: $49, Participation Goal: 227 Families Last year, archdiocesan services provided more than 3,891 men, women, and children with assistance for basic needs such as food, clothing, utility and rental assistance. Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help make this work possible. Please respond with a generous gift to the 2017 Catholic Services Appeal. Chesterton Wedding Anniversary Mass Archbishop Kurtz warmly invites couples celebrating their 30, 40, 50, 60 and 60 plus years wedding anniversary in 2017 to join others in the Archdiocese for a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral of the Assumption on Sunday, October 22, at 2 p.m. Family members are also invited to the celebration. Each couple will receive a certificate commemorating the occasion. Registration is required by calling Monica in the parish office, , before Thursday, October 4. The Iron Man Competition will be heading our way on Sunday, October 15. There will be NO 10:30 a.m. Mass and NO 12:30 p.m. Mass that day. No PREP October 15! What is your temperature? 6 Prime Timers caught on camera having a great time at their recent trip to Jenny Wiley State Park!!! If you are a parishioner, age 50+, you are invited to be a Prime Timer!!! We meet on the second Wednesday of each month in Bethany Hall. Why not start by coming to our next regular meeting on Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Bethany Hall. Fall is in the air, so we are having a Pot Luck Supper! Butternut squash soup, apple pie, or whatever lucky pot fixings you conjure up. 7 Prayer Shawl Ministry Thank you, thank you to all Prayer Shawl Ministry members!!! We had about 300 items donated this summer and for this charitable act, we say THANK YOU again!! Here is a list of things we need for this coming fall and winter seasons: Seasonal chemo hats, men s and ladies Seat belt covers x 9 rectangle Preemie and baby hats And, of course, we always need lap blankets! Gennesaret Retreat Gennesaret Ministries, Inc., is offering the next Gennesaret Retreat for the Seriously Ill which will be held Friday-Sunday, October 27-29, 2017 at the Abbey of Gethsemani south of Bardstown, Kentucky. The retreat is designed for persons who live with chronic or life-threatening illness. The retreat provides rest, prayerful reflection, and daily conferences. The Eucharist is celebrated daily and the Sacrament of the Sick is offered. The staff includes an experienced nursing staff with additional team members providing hospitality, companionship, and personal assistance for all retreat guests. The retreat is free through the generosity of many friends. White Mass On Sunday, October 22, 5:30 p.m., at Cathedral of the Assumption, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will preside at the White Mass, and health care professionals of all faiths are invited to attend. The White Mass gathers those who work in healthcare under the patronage of Saint Luke to ask God s blessing upon patients, doctors, nurses, and others who serve in this profession. All physicians are encouraged to wear their white coats for this special Mass. The Word in Our Lives Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Understanding Father Jesus is saying something important in today s Gospel. He talks about tax collectors and prostitutes who repented after hearing John the Baptist preach. He must have shocked the priests and elders when he said those prostitutes would enter the kingdom of God before them. After all, his listeners had spent their whole lives being faithful to the Law. Yet Jesus was saying that sinners who repented will enter God s kingdom first. Jesus point was not so much about final salvation as about our daily choices. Remember the parable about the two sons. The second son said what his father wanted to hear, with no intention of doing it. The first was honest about not wanting to go to the vineyard, but then decided to do it anyway. I suspect the father of those men knew what each would or would not do. And whom do we want to imitate? The priests and elders said all the right things about obeying God s laws, but they were more interested in looking important than living a holy life. Are we like that telling everyone I am a good Christian, going to church every Sunday (or at least on Christmas and Easter), and yet never making any effort to be loving, forgiving, patient, honest, or any of the difficult things that Jesus calls us to be? The tax collectors and sinners knew that they were unworthy, but they listened to the call to repentance and let God make them worthy. Are we honest enough to look at our lives and repent of our hatred, our selfishness, or whatever keeps us in sin, and then to follow Jesus with our whole heart? We may not always like doing what God asks of us, but God is an understanding Father who can accept our weaknesses and forgive them when we are ready to return to him. -Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S.
