3 This weekend we celebrate the wonderful Feast of the Epiphany. As we bring yet another Christmas Season to its conclusion, we hear the familiar story of the Magi, travelling from the East to come and worship the newborn king. The story tells us that they followed a particularly bright star. In those ancient times, when one spotted a star that was outstanding in the sky, it was a sign that a ruler, a king, was coming to birth. The Magi read the signs of that time and set out on an arduous journey. They eventually come to the stable and presented their gifts to the Holy Family. The fact that they came from the East also indicated that they were not Jews but Gentiles, this becomes a key element in the history of salvation. The Jewish people initially believed that the Savior would come not only for the Israelite nation, but for the salvation of those people. It was surprising that the first visitors at the stable after the shepherds were the Gentile astronomers, this is why this feast, the Epiphany, means the showing forth to all the nations. Like the Magi we too find ourselves on a journey the journey of life whose destination is finding and coming to adore the newborn Christ in our midst. We too are called to read the signs of our times and to follow the bright star of hope and promise which this season brings. Sometimes the sky is dark or clouded over, that s when faith takes over and encourages us to hold on until the skies clear and the star returns to offer us guidance. Because this feast is so special, each year we celebrate our Annual Caroling on this day. We invite and encourage you to come this afternoon at 3:00pm and to join in this prayerful singalong which has become a St. Michael s tradition. HAPPY EPIPHANY! Ron s Ramblings 3 Este fim de semana celebrámos a festa da Epifania. Ao chegarmos ao fim de outra época de Natal, ouvimos a familiar história dos Reis Magos viagando desde o Este para vir adorar o menino Rei. A história nos diz que eles seguiram uma estrela brilhante la do céu. Nos tempos antigos quando se via uma estrela mais brilhante no ceu era sinal que um governante,um rei estava pra nascer. Os Reis Magos leram os sinais daquele tempo e partiram numa dificil jornada. Eles eventualmente chegaram à gruta onde estava o menino e apresentaram os presentes à Sagrada Familia. O facto de eles terem vindo do Este tambem indica que eles não eram Judeus mas Gêntios. Isto se torna na chave do elemento na história da salvaҫão. Os Judeus inicialmente acreditaram que o Salvador havia de chegar não só para os Israelitas mas para todo o seu povo. Foi uma surpresa que os primeiros a visitar a gruta depois dos pastores foram os astrónomos Gêntios. Ésta é a razão que a festa da Epifania representa a apresentaҫão de todas as naҫões. Tal como os Reis Magos nós tambem nos encontramos numa jornada a jornada da vida em que o seu destino é encontrar e vir adorar o menino Jesus recemnacido no meio de nós. Nós tambem somos chamados a ler os sinais dos nossos tempos e seguir a estrela brilhante da esperanҫa e promessa que esta época nos tráz. Ás vezes o céu e escuro ou coberto de nuvens. É aí que a fé toma control e nos encoraja a estar firmes até que o céu se esclareie e a estrela retorna pra nos guiar. E porque esta festa é muito especial, é que em cada ano celebramos com os côros com canҫões de Natal neste dia. Convidamos a todos vós a vir esta tarde a assistir e a orar cantando o que se tornou numa tradiҫão da nossa paróquia de São Miguel. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION This week we welcome back our students from their Christmas Break. There is a catechist meeting on January 3 rd at 1:00. There is the CAROL SING at 3:00pm! Consider attending this event again if you have attended before and attend this year as a closing of the Christmas season! Join in and sing a joyful song to the Lord! Adult Faith Formation The Solemnity of the Epiphany was once called Little Christmas, and the story of the Magi was one of four epiphanies or manifestations that surrounded God s intervention in human history. The birth of Christ, his baptism, and the miracle of the wedding feast of Cana are the other three. Each of these signs gives a different insight on Christ s coming. How does Matthew tell his Epiphany story? Matthew tells us the Magi receive a warning not to return to Heroda warning in a dream. In the Bible, dreams alert humans that certain occurrences are not what they seem. The Magi departed for their country by another way. 5 HEALTH NOTICE TO ALL PARISHIONERS!!!!!!!!! The cold and flu season is once again upon us. I plead with you to please stay home from church if you have a fever, cold, upper respiratory infection or the like. God does not expect you to be coming to Mass under any of these circumstances. Our children are taught now in health classes to cough and sneeze into their elbows so as to protect others from germs. I encourage each of us to learn to do the same. One last note of interest, if I may. At the Sign of Peace during Mass please refrain form shaking another s hand if you are sick. Simply nod and acknowledge their presence, it means the same thing. Stay well and please take care of yourself and be mindful of others. Mary Ellen Events/Meetings and Reminders Ministry MeetingsAll are WELCOME to join! Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Monday after the 9:00am Mass until noon time, in the lower church. Catholic Daughters Ministry will be meeting on Thursday, January, 7th at 12:00pm in the parish center. We will be having both a Tai Chi presentation and a Valentine craft demonstration along with our monthly meeting. Ladies sodality will be hosting Our Father s Table on Thursday, January 7th from 4pm6pm at the New Hope Community Church in Marlboro. Volunteers always needed! Prayer Shawl will be meeting on Wednesday, January 13th at 1:30 in Lower Church Portuguese Cursillo Prayer Service will meet Wednesday, January 13th at 7:00pm St. Michael Parish will be hosting Our Father s Table on Thursday, January 14th from 4pm6pm at the New Hope Community Church in Marlboro. Volunteers always needed! Christmas Flower Donations Due to the early submission of the bulletins the list of Christmas Flower Donations will be printed in the bulletin in early January. T E L TEEN DRINKING AND DRIVING: A DEADLY RITE OF PASSAGE For a teenager, getting a driver s license is a rite of passage: the beginning of a journey toward social independence. According to MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, road crashes is one of the leading cause of death among teenagers. 45% of these crashes are a direct result of impaired driving. Here is some practical advice for parents: Establish the ground rules and penalties for breaking them. You HAVE to talk to your teenager and you HAVE to understand them. A study of over 1000 teens found that teens with hands on parents who establish clear behavior expectations, monitor their teens comings and goings, and aren t afraid to say no are four times less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Encourage them to get in the habit of choosing a designated driver. Network with other parents of their friends and take turns being the designated driver on Friday and Saturday nights. Make seat belt wearing mandatory. Provide them with the number of a taxi service and the necessary cab fare. No matter what time of day, agree to pick them up when they call for a ride home. NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!!!! Create a secret code with your teen. Teens say that losing face with peers is a big reason they couldn t call for help. So create a code like 777 or a phrase he/she can use so your teen can save face and still alert you that he needs a designated driver and rescue. You as a parent need to understand that peer pressure is tough and HUGE to your teen. Let them know you will be monitoring them. The old waiting at the front door technique works wonders: hug (smell for liquor); check eyes for redness; ask how party was (check speech patterns); and look for gum or mints (to reduce alcohol smell). Feel free as a parent to be strict without feeling guilty. You are responsible for their safety and wellbeing. Let them know you LOVE them. Now go talk to your teen. Then talk again and again and again. The choices you make and the conversations you have with your teen matter. Don t forget, teens get their views about alcohol from watching. BE THE EXAMPLE YOU WANT YOUR TEEN TO FOLLOW. 5

When God created the world, he planned exactly when the wise men would see the star. He wanted them to find Jesus. Prayer Dear God, thank you for making the planets and stars so the wise men could find Jesus. Something to Draw Draw a picture of stars and planets shining in the night sky.
