4 Liturgy Corner Epiphany of Our Lord: Today we continue the season of Christmas with the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. The solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord has several themes. First we have the wise men being guided through darkness by the light of the star. Second, we have the star as a sign that leads the wise men to Jesus. Third, we have the manifestation of God to Gentiles, not just Jews pointing to the reality that Jesus came for all people. Fourth, we have the mystery that God does reveal his very self in human flesh. Epiphany is Greek meaning showing forth or manifestation. The word mystery is used in the second reading. Mystery in Greek mysterion refers to God s unfolding plan, decreed from the beginning and gradually revealed according to the divine timetable. The manifestation of God to the Gentiles was a challenge to the Jews. They considered the Gentiles to be unclean. The Evangelist reassures Jew and Gentile alike that the divine plan is intended for the people. Like many of the most ancient Christian feasts, Epiphany was first celebrated in the East, where it has been held from the beginning almost universally on January 6. In many parts of Europe it is considered little Christmas, a time to exchange gifts. The Epiphany marks the end of the 12 Days of Christmas. But, it does not end the liturgical Christmas season. The Baptism of Our Lord is the end of the Christmas season liturgically. Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance: the Baptism of the Lord; Christ's first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man: At Christ's Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ's divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ's divinity is revealed to the Gentiles the other nations of the earth. Over the centuries, the various celebrations were separated in the West, and now the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday after January 6, and the wedding at Cana is commemorated on the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord. Tradition has drawn different associations with the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus. Gold is a sign of wealth and was regarded as a symbol of kingship; frankincense 1 is a type of incense that symbolized divinity and was also associated with prayer, as it was burned alongside the grain offerings in the Tabernacle as a fragrant offering rising to God. 2 Myrrh is an aromatic resin that was one of the ingredients of the holy oil used for anointing priests, prophets, and kings, and it was also used to embalm the dead (thus symbolically foreshadowing the death of Jesus). But what about us? What gifts can we bring to our Lord and King? In truth, we have nothing to give Jesus that is not already His; everything that we have and are is a gift from God. We have nothing to offer Him other than ourselves; we have nothing to bring Him other than our love and worship. Yet these are the gifts that He desires the most, the gifts that are truly fit for the King who gives Himself completely to us so that we can be united with Him forever in eternity. Come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! (sources used: Sourcebook, At Home With The Word and the internet)

6 Have you ever wondered about what the Catholic Church teaches? Have you or someone you know implied they might be interested in joining or returning to the Catholic Church. It culminates in the reception of the sacraments of Christian Initiation: Baptism - Confirmation - Eucharist As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) says, these sacraments lay the foundations of every Christian life. (1212). RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is offered on Tuesday evenings 7:00-8:30pm. RCIA is the process by which adults are received into full communion with the Catholic Church. For more information please call or Pat Raschio, or pat.raschio@gmail.com. Adult Confirmation: If you are an adult who has not received this sacrament Archbishop Samples invites you to prepare for the celebration of Adult Confirmation in May at the Cathedral. If you would like to participate and need more information and to register for the reception of the sacrament please call or Pat; pat.raschio@gmail.com or Are you a practicing Catholic who did not receive the sacrament of Confirmation when you were in high school? Have you ever been asked to be a godparent and found out you were not eligible because you have not received the sacrament of Confirmation, or would like to be a lector or Eucharistic Minister at church and have found out you are not eligible because you have not received the sacrament of Confirmation. The sacrament of Confirmation completes the sacraments of Initiation. As the Catechism article #1285 states: a reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For the sacrament of Confirmation, {the baptized} are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Adult Enrichment Happenings! Adult Enrichment wants to offer speakers and classes to help adults grow in faith and in prayer life. Make a New Year resolution to grow in you faith and prayer life by trying one of our many offerings. Book Study: Pilgrimage into the Last Third of Life: 7 Gateways to Spiritual Growth. This series is a spiritual growth for all as we age and face the limitations which come along. Centering Prayer is a method of prayer revived from ancient teachings in the Christian contemplative heritage that emphasize prayer as personal relationship with God. Centering Prayer offers us a way to quiet our faculties. By taking time to rest in God each day, we prepare to receive the gift of God's presence. Come learn more about this powerful spiritual discipline.

NEW YEAR S RESOLUTION INSPIRE 100% PARTICIPATION Many thanks to the 98 families who have made a commitment to help repair our church roof. Because of their great generosity we are at 60% of our goal of $250,000. But there is more to be done we need to keep momentum going and encourage the 687 families who have not yet made their commitment to do so now. We can do this! Pick up your pledge card in the back of church today and help us clean the roof and get it resurfaced to protect from leaks and shine again as the landmark it is meant to be.
